  • Introduction

    Hello,

I am just starting. I actually started yesterday. I haven't read the book yet. I still need to get a copy of that. I am just currently keeping my carbs under 20g a day with no grains. One thing I am finding out on the site is that none of the atkins bars are allowed during induction. I actually had one earlier today before I knew it was off limits because on the box it said it was allowed in all phases. Some of the bars said it was only for phases 2-4, but this box said all phases. Oh well, better to happen early than later. I currently weigh 410 and am 6'1. I want to get down to 250 or less. I actually lost about 25 lbs just eating less, but have put 5 back on so now I am trying the Atkins diet. I have had significant weight losses before years ago the most being 75 lbs. I have hypertension and was just diagnosed with a mild case of diabetes.

Well, that is my introduction of myself. Any information regarding the diet would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    The Razorback Fan

Well, the book is the best place to start. It's almost impossible to "do Atkins" without a copy!

Until you get one, you can check out:

      Re: Introduction

Hi Razor, the threads J pointed you to willl get you off to a good start. The Atkins corporation manufactures the bars and they stall a lot of people besides containing things that the Doctor himself would not approve of for Induction. Do get the book and read it. There is a lot more to this than our threads can explain. Atkins, if you stick to it, is a wonderful way to control your diabetes. Make sure you eat your vegetables each day and check the list before you do. Many folks assume all veggies are OK but some are not allowed in Induction. Also drink lots of plain water--at your weight you should shoot for 200 ounces a day! I am betting you will get a double digit loss in Induction if you stick to the plan. Wishing you a successful start!

        Welcome --

Of course you already have read the book is invaluable to following Atkins correctly, it's more than just eating 20 carbs no grains a day....much more! Following Atkins is a great way to help get your diabetes under control. Last June I was diagosed with Type 2 diabetes and had an A1C of 10.3 -- a couple months ago my last A1C was 5.0 - huge difference! It should also help with high blood pressure - check the different threads on medical issues as well as the exercise challenges, I'm sure you'll find something that interests you to join in and get yourself going on the right track.

A few tips to help get you started: Drink a minimum 64 ounces of pure water daily (nothing added), exercise and take a non-iron multivitamin - these are mandatory with Atkins so start now and get off on the right foot. Also, start a journal, it's a great place to get everything out in the open, be accountable to yourself - you'll also meet some great people there! http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...journal-chats/

          Re: Introduction

Thanks for the input y'all. I have ordered the book. I understand that if one has a substantial amount of weight to lose i.e. 50 lbs or more then they can do induction for up to half of desired weight loss. I would love to lose close to 200lbs. Would you recommend staying on induction until I lose nearly 100 lbs? I reckon the book will have these answers, but I am curious. Thanks.

One can stay in Induction until one loses more than 1/2 of the weight one needs to lose, or less. I've head before this stuff about losing half of your weight in Induction, but I have no idea where it comes from. It's certainly not in DANDR.

Many people stay in Induction FAR too long and they end up messing up... for various reasons, like food boredom or a "quick fix" mentality. But in the end, the length of one's Induction is a very individual thing, and it's difficult for anyone but you to say what's best. Chapters 12 and 13 in DANDR 2002 will help you decide what to do after your first two weeks.

              NO.

Induction isn't about losing weight ... it's about getting your body ready to lose the weight ... in OWL.

                Re: Introduction

I think you need to look at it knowing yourself and how you function best. Some folks find Induction easier to stick with because there is no guessing. They are folks that don't require a lot of variety and Induction provides a framework that allows them to kind of continue on auto pilot. This is as good as far as it goes, but I would definitely recommending OWL for your last half of loss.

If, on the other hand, you need variety, you may want to move on earlier to OWL. Better to move up and have the variety than become so bored and frustrated with the limited choices on Induction that you chuck the whole program in a nacho binge some night.

So a lot comes down to you and what works best with your body and personality.

The lessons you learn in OWL about which foods cause cravings and trigger you are the tools you need for maintenance once you lose your weight--and it takes a long time to work through OWL properly. So don't underestimate its importance.
