  • I MUST start over :*(

    Hello every one...

My name is Vicky (aka flutiegurl) and I am brand new here to this forum. I am in desperate search for help (moreso, encouragement) to start Atkins again. Most of my entire life, I've been battling weight and never could stay on any diet ... well, until 3 years ago when I tried Atkins and lost 30 lbs. in 5 months. And in truth, I was feeling GREAT!

During that time, I was also about to lose my very best friend, my soul mate, Toby, who was my 14 yr. old Blue Pt. Himalayan who I adored more than anything else on earth. Tobe got very sick the last few years of his life and I was his nurse the duration with the help of our vet. Nevertheless, the loss of Toby threw me over the edge and I fell off Atkins shortly after he passed. That was 3 years ago.

Today, I've gained 20 lbs of the 30 I had lost and I'm starting to get a little concerned. (Obviously) What I'm finding out is that it is nearly impossible for me to start on Atkins again, even though I am really wanting to! I was never a salad eater and I ate a lot of it on Atkins back in the day ... so I think this is what is stopping me in my tracks, though I know better deep down. I NEED to eat salads because they are good for you! *sighh*

Anyway, just wanted to say hello and join your forum. I use to be with another forum 3 years ago and really enjoyed it. But, I think I'm just too shy to go back there and face the music. I rather start new and fresh with you guys!

I need help to begin this again. I really, really do, because I feel quite lost. :-(

Happy new year to every one.

    Hi, Vicky!

Actually, you don't "NEED" to eat salads. You may eat cooked vegetables instead. All vegetables can be cooked, including those on the "salad vegetables" list.

      Hi Georgiana,

I think it boils down to not being a green veggie person, overall. I'm pretty picky and only ate green beans and a few salads here and there when I use to do Atkins. Oh, and brussel sprouts.

I need to get into a new frame of mind, because I know my current state is not a good one for this.

I'm looking to start over and, without my old book, I'm somewhat lost. Perhaps, with a little searching thru this forum, I'll learn quickly.

      Thanks bunches for your thoughts...

        Hi Vicky
Sorry about your beloved pet but I think you can do this! Just jump on the bandwagon. None of us are perfect and we fail from time to time (as you have or will see reading the posts around here.)

Like Georgiana said...you don't have to eat salad. Do you like broccoli and cheese? cauliflower and cheese? Do you like spinach cooked...as in quiche type dishes? There are a lot of options out there and you can certainly avoid the salads. Shoot...I'd rather have a burger or fajita chicken/steak/shrimp and veggies than a salad any day!

If you haven't bought any of the Atkins books...go get a few. Either check them out of the library or go to some thrift stores and grab all of them for less than$10!!! I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the recipes out there.

        Oh...and welcome to the forum

Don't you have your book from last time? Or is it not the 2002 edition you are talking about?

Thanks, Kellinga! I did see the Atkins Essentials in Goodwill a few weeks ago. I think it was $1.00, actually. I should have grabbed it.

Can anyone recommend the best Atkins "starter" book? Back in the old days, there was only 1 book. Now it seems there are several??

I threw my old book away in digust of my weight gain again.

If I remember correctly, the "old" Atkins diet is different from the newer version. But, the old version (the first one) was, in my opinion, the best. I had a very hard time finding that book which had an old date on it... maybe even 1995.

I wish I still had that book.

Atkins Essentials only covers the Induction phase. So you will need more than that book. Nevertheless, I think it's a good book to have.

Well, at ADBB we go by Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution (2002). It explains all the phases of Atkins, how and why this "diet" works... and it also presents lots of research supporting the plan.

Which plan did you follow last time you did Atkins? Was 1972 the edition of your book? Or 1992? 1998? 1999? 2002?

Georgiana, I forgot to thank you for the links above. I've been into them already, starting with acceptable foods.

My old book was dated in the early to mid 90s.... but I don't think it was any newer than 1995. It was a much easier (for me!) book to follow which is how I lost my 30 lbs. It offered me all the phases, and acceptable food lists, but it seems the foods on current lists are somewhat different nowadays. Unfortunately, I don't have the old one to compare, but it does seem different.

I think it could have been the 1992 edition. This sounds vaguely familiar.

Re: I MUST start over :*(

Thank you, Carole, for the input. I plan on visiting a couple of Goodwill stores here locally for the 2002 edition, or earlier if I can find it. If no luck there, then I will definitely look online.

I'm trying my hardest to remember what it was that is so different than the Essentials book I was recently browsing through, borrowed from a friend of mine. If memory serves me well, I remember the old Atkins approach allowed more foods whereas the newer editions don't of the same, mainly noticed during the Induction chapters. I was very surprised at the differences.

I also knew there were other variations that differed, as well, but I just can't remember all of the finer points. All I know is that I lost 30 lbs very fast following the old book and the newer versions seem much more complicated to follow.

But, nevertheless... as said, I fell off the wagon and I'm not very happy right now.

Thanks again for your help. Appreciate it bunches!

                            >>All I know is that I lost 30 lbs very fast following the old book>>

No version of Atkins is about losing "very fast".

It's about keeping the weight off once you've lost it.

And losing slower is more likely to help you accomplish that.

Hi Atkinsgal... I never said the books were to lose weight fast. I said I lost weight fast on an older edition, that's all.

No diet and/or changing to healthier eating habits is to accomplish fast weight loss. I've known this for years. I just got lucky and did.

I also remember the old edition was much easier for me to follow. I imagine this had lots to do with my weight loss, as well

                              Thanks.
