Re: New to this board AND Atkins - Day 2!!!

    Thanks again, J!

Carole, true, I wasn't expecting to be able to eat the pasta just yet. I saw it has too many net carbs in it for me still. Especially right now. When I made spaghetti squash I baked it in a water bath and I don't think it worked. I will try the microwave method next time. Sounds much easier and faster anyways! I am gonna put that on my shopping list for tonight!

Had a bit of a blow up with hubby about Atkins today though...feeling sort of down. He basically said I am killing myself. Nice. He wouldn't listen and said he already knows all about the diet from his ex girlfriends mother who was a nutritionist who taught the Atkins way of eating. Not sure what he thinks I am doing but I assured him, I am probably eating way more healthy vegetables and vitamins and minerals than he is getting with his jolly rancher/white bread/sugar soda diet! Whatever, right? He'll just have to deal! This WOE is totally healthy and completely natural in my opinion. It just makes sense to me. This is how the human body was MEANT to eat! Maybe once he sees how great I look and feel, he will warm up to it.

Yeah well I have been depressed and hurt by his comment all day. I know I shouldn't let it get to me but it does! *humph* At least I am not the only one to feel that way! Lol. I feel better and more normal now. Thank you! Here's what he needs: Lol! Oh and one of these:

Re: New to this board AND Atkins - Day 2!!!

Much better and that extra 1.5 lost doesn't hurt either. I know I shouldn't weigh myself but induction is really doing the trick! That means about .5lb a day on induction so far. I am very excited about that! That blows away any dumb comment in my opinion. Plus, he made dinner last night and made me a steak since the sausages were too high carb for me (had added sugar) and they were in buns and he made everyone else chili and mac n cheese. I had my steak and green beans and a salad and was happy. He even stole some of my steak! Lol. I think he's coming around and just teasing me because he's afraid it'll be one of those things where I give up and do something else in a month. I am out to prove him wrong now. That's the fun part!

Last night we went grocery shopping and I dreaded it (another lecture on the horizon???). However he was okay with buying more bacon (the good kind, no carb, no nitrates) and more eggs, and natural breakfast sausages for me and letting me check every label of stuff I was going to eat w/o giving me guff. I asked him if he would help get the food for everyone else because I didn't know what they wanted to eat all week and he agreed. He told me though, anything more than what we got last night and I have to get it with my own money! Lol. I said sure, at this point, it might just be eggs because he really did get me everything I needed. I am happy and though he talks a big thing, when it comes down to it, he supports me. I just get a big bunch of talk in the beginning until he realizes I am not going to give up or give in. Maybe that's what he's doing - testing me. Maybe he wants to see if this is just another "diet" that I am trying and if I will give it up before I can eat all the food we just spent money on but I wont, I will keep eating the good food! I can't help it now, I am no longer addicted to sugar or carbs and my appetite feels like its under control. I haven't felt this in years - maybe since my kids were born and I started eating candy, sugar, and refined carbs because that was what my first husband liked. I went from 130lbs to 165 and stayed there for years. I wanted to lose back to at least 145lbs (because that was healthy and comfortable for me) but never could get past 155 and that never lasted the two minutes I saw that weight. So sad. I just couldn't keep it off. I had to starve and I just can't do that anymore. In fact I think I can say that I "low cal dieted" my way up to 219lbs! No more! This is the way of life for me. I am hooked! I spent the first 11 days on OWL to get rid of cravings (mine were bad) and then Wed I started induction so today is day 4! I am so excited to see the 2lbs (lost during OWL, sort of my weaning off phase, plus wasn't sure what phase I should start in) PLUS another 1.5 in induction so far lost for good! I can't believe how easy this is!!! Well it is now that my cravings are gone. I tried induction years ago and never got past day 3 because of cravings. Yesterday was hard but I made it! No cheats! Yay me!

Re: New to this board AND Atkins - Day 2!!!

You know what's funny too? I think now that I am on Atkins and my appetite is under control I am not as worried about excessive carb cravings after a long run. That's always been my problem with long distance training - the cravings and resultant weight gain. I don't think it will be a problem now. I can exercise how I want and still lose/maintain without monster cravings. SOOOO wonderful. What a freeing feeling!

I am excited about my running training this year now! No more dreading it!

Ahhh well...I am trying to get out of the mode of weighing myself almost daily because that's where I get a lot of my impatience from. If I weigh maybe once or twice a week I can see more improvement and not get disappointed by lack of progress in one day lol. Later on I will probably weigh more often again but it really messes with my head so I am trying to hold off...couldn't help myself today I guess. I hope I can hold off again until Monday or Tuesday. Sometimes its so bad that I weigh several times a day (like before and after a run). Obsessive! So I am being careful about not over monitoring so I can stay the course and not play the mind games that low cal dieting got me into!

Long response but that's why in a large nutshell (pun intended lol).

Hi, I just joined the website and have done atkins before but unfourtionitly I went off it and gained all of my weight back and twenty more. I lost about 50 pounds doing atkirns in about 6 months. I would say you should try dreamfields pasta. they have this way of making it low carb and you wouldnt believe how good it tastes just like real pasta. once again its called Dream fields pasta. it really is that good. good luck with your weight loss and countinued success.

Dreamfield's pasta isn't an Induction food.

And since it's a grain, it shouldn't be added back until Rung 9 of OWL ... or even pre-maintenance.

True, I didn't plan on actually getting any until I get to Rung 9 but its good to hear a good review on it since I was seriously considering adding that to my future list of maintenance and OWL foods! I am glad its really that good. It lets me know its probably worth ordering.

I ordered some golden flaxseed meal on amazon and got a great deal. I am excited to get my shipment! I hope it gives me some more things I can make for snacks and breakfast. I was a cereal girl before - though at least in my low cal days I was eating steel cut oats and adding protein to it. Maybe someday down the road I can have that again occasionally. Probably good to look forward to for maintenance.

Day 5 of induction done and I feel great. Ran 8 miles today. No issues except a little dehydration (my fault I forgot my water, I know better) but easily fixed with some soup tonight and powerade zero. I feel much better now well, also after having some more water and fluids too. I ran 5 miles yesterday too...I only planned on 3 lol. Feeling pretty great about this!!!

P.S. I think I should lower my goal to 145-148lbs because honestly, I think its possible with this way of eating. I just couldn't do it with low cal diets. I am kicking myself for not trying this sooner! It's amazing.

I love to see more Atkins runners though. You can join our milage challenge this month if you like. I'll be there too.

Thanks! I think I joined in...if I got the right area. Lol.

I hope to do my favorite half marathon in May - this will be my third year doing it and I hope to make it my best yet!

I wanted to update you guys though - I moved onto OWL and so far I haven't dropped many pounds but you know what??? I have lost over an inch on each of my measurements (at least, haven't checked in a week or two) and my body fat was measuring at 27% and my latest measurement (Sunday) was 21.5%!!!! Wow! All that and losing like 3lbs so the truth is in my changed body composition. My size 10's fit like a glove now and were tight before (if I could button them lol) and I can't believe how much better I feel over all. My skin is clear as can be my PMS is almost non-existant (and it ruled my life before) and even my hair and nails look better! My puffiness is gone and so is a lot of my tiredness. Now I am just tired because I just ran 5 miles or something lol. I progressed in the plan and I am up to 30-35gms of carbs/day and it's only getting better. This is my new way of life for sure. I never thought reducing my body fat could be this easy!!! I am not hungry, I snack all the time and nowadays I don't hardly worry about my weight anymore. It's such an amazing feeling. I had yo-yo effects on the scale but now, its steady and consistent and doesn't jump around like it used to. I have NEVER not had it jump around a lot more than it does, now its within normal limits. When I would train hard for a race, I would go up almost 10lbs and not muscle weight either. I would crave carbs and eat them too. Now I don't have cravings, have the energy (the steady kind too) to complete my runs and I am not ravenous afterwards. I get hungry yes, but its not the same. I don't get hypoglycemic like I used to either. I also found a good multivitamin (thanks to a recommendation from this site) and that's helping too (though this way of eating is really healthy all by itself). My husband has had a turn around too - he asked me why I wanted to buy vitamins because the food I am eating now is just so good for me and some of the healthiest food available. Good man. I told him "insurance" lol.

Thanks to everyone who's helped me.

Re: New to this board AND Atkins - Day 2!!!

Thanks, Liv! Yes I am pretty addicted to running and have been for the last 2.5yrs but had reached a point where my weight gain was holding me back. I needed a way to help control my weight (diet-wise) that didn't involve starvation and I finally found it. I have great energy now for my running and I don't hardly need any fuel along the way with me when I run long now...Sunday I ran 10 miles and felt fabulous the whole time. No sluggishness, no need for the sugary gels, just kept plugging along. I was slow but I was happy. I felt that I was definitely in fat burn mode - it just feels different than when you're burning glucose. Weird. I can tell the difference now though. I was afraid I wouldn't have the energy to complete the running training plan I am doing and still lose weight or at least control weight gain during times of heavy training but I think I finally found my ticket to success. I haven't been getting the bad carb craving backlash that I usually get after a long run (though I was definitely more hungry afterwards for the next day) and my PMS cravings weren't as bad either. I was a little snippy during PMS time but if I ate often enough, that was manageable too. *Sigh of relief*

Liv, you keep up those 10k's! That is my favorite distance and my fastest race time was a 10K so I am partial to that distance. It's a good place to be. Enjoy it, if you want to get faster you can throw in some intervals once a week or so or run on a hilly route every so often. Hills are challenging but really do the job in strengthening and speeding up performance.
