  • Delighted to Find You

Happy day! I started Induction today and have just finished a delicious salad and waiting for string beans to finish cooking. I found you doing a search to see if they were allowed as they're not on the official Atkins Diet site.

Anyway, I will lose a lot of weight (140 lbs) to reduce health related risk factors, blot out hypertension and enjoy a better quality of life now and in my senior years. My family history isn't good but that can change with me.

I'm motivated and open to your encouragement and prodding. I'll continue with the Induction Phase until I need more variety but will add almonds beginning the third week.

Divorced, no children, not dating, enjoying Jesus and love people! Take special care!

    Best regards,
    Jovi

PS I signed up for a 3-mile walk on 3/6 to help me along. I'll begin training for it on Tuesday. I will be home the next four days adjusting to my new eating habits then begin walking to train for the charity walk. Together, sweet Jesus and I can do this. I know you can, too! Let's!

    Welcome to ADBB, Jovi!

Green beans are allowed ... even at the official Atkins site. It's unfortunate that they can't get the list of Induction food right, isn't it. That list has been wrong since August of 2008!!!

They're called "string beans" in the list in Chapter 11 of your book.

    >>will add almonds beginning the third week.>>

Wouldn't doing the first rung of OWL be a better choice?

      Welcome --

Sounds like you made a wonderful meal - hope you were full and stayed that way until your next meal!! The plan is easy to follow and cooking a few meals ahead will make it so much more convenient for you. Linda's recipe site has wonderful recipes that will keep you from getting bored with the same thing over and over: http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/menus.html.

Have you read the 2002 Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) it is our guideline here on the board. Eat foods listed on the acceptable food list http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-low-carb-dieting-faqs/6781-what-foods-can-eaten-induction.html, eating a variety of foods and vegetables and count all “net carbs” (carb minus fiber equal net carbs). Keep track of your food totals for the day using a program like www.fitday.com to help you do that.

Water is essential - make sure you drink a minimum 64 ounces daily - pure water is the onlly thing that counts, not tea, coffee, etc. Take a vitamin without iron, exercise and enjoy the journey!

Thanks for the welcome and reply!

Are you saying to wait to add almonds? I read on the site if the Induction Phase were continuing when you have a large amount of weight to lose, it was okay to add almonds after the first 2 weeks of Induction but not to exceed 23g net carbs for the day. (An increase in 3g adding almonds)

Please clarify if I'm wrong. I will read the boards. Looks like another friendly reply after yours with links to follow. I'll be busy.

        Have a great weekend!

And yes, they should get the site accurate. Geesssh!

        Regards,

          Hiya Carole,

Thanks for the welcome! Also, thanks for the hints, links, suggestions and advice. Very kind of you to assist as you have.

I was searching last night for a diet journal and couldn't remember fitday.com. I thought I bookmarked it ages ago and that could explain why I'm unable to find it.

I plan to prepare/cook meals in advance for several days. It's just me so that will be easy. I just want to get through Induction. When I tried this many years ago, I recall how lousy I felt for a couple of days. I've suffered from migraines in the past so any headachy feeling is a bit alarming for me. I'll see it through and believe it can be easy with proper preparations.

I look forward to a variety of recipes to make it fun, yummy and boring-free.

Dinner was delicious. I had porkchops cooked in olive oil and seasoned with ranch dressing mix. I sprinkled it on the chops and pan-fried them in a couple tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil. The chops w/green beans were delish!
I tend to drink a gallon of water a day so I am not concerned about that. My pitfalls are desserts and inactivity. Things ... well, they've got to change and they are!

          Take special care,
          Jovi

Nuts are added back in in one ounce increments (except for cashews) ... and an ounce of almonds is 2.64 net carbs ... so the 3 net carbs is rounding.

            >>if the Induction Phase were continuing when you have a large amount of weight to lose,>>

You're supposed to lose most of your weight on OWL ... Induction is to get your body ready to lose.

If almonds are that "important" to you ... then moving to OWL might be in your longterm best interests.

Staying on Induction too long can be counter-productive.

I've seen a lot of people say they use the hidden valley ranch powder/mix because it's sugar free. I have checked every variety of dry dressing in my store and none are sugar free. In fact sugar is usually the first ingredient. But it's usually under an alias name, not the name sugar.

If anyone knows of a true sugar free/atkins friendly one. I'd love to know.

Nuts are important to me. I have them in salads and in cooked dishes, especially seafood.

I understand Induction indefinitely is counterproductive. I was going to stick with it at least 6 weeks or sooner if energy level required more. My plan is to be active wherein I'm more sedentary now. (I have a few close people keeping me accountable. Close in relationship and proximity.)

The ranch dressing mix, yes, I read the package. No sugars and 2g carbs. I cooked two chops and sprinkled a tablespoon total on them.

I want to lose 140 pounds.

What are you thinking? (Thanks for the input and your time.) I appreciate it so very much.

Hidden Valley Ranch powder/mix is the one I'm using. The label per serving says 0 sugars. I guess the hidden (pun intended) ingredient could be the sugar. I can certainly live without it but it added a punch to the flavor. I was going to bake chicken with it for tomorrow and have it through Sunday.

                      Re: Delighted to Find You

The Atkins book is a bit unclear on whether people moving in to extended can have nuts on week 3. I think some of us do think that is what he is saying. But you can only eat a few and be careful. Many of us have bad addictions when it comes to nuts and they can really derail us. I really think it is best to wait and get more sure of your control but I don't thing it is wrong to eat them (according to the book).

String beans are great. Good to hear that you are eating your veggies. Hope to see more of your posts.

Hi Liv and thanks! I can wait until I am in better 'standing' so to speak before the nuts. Nuts and raisins are staples for me. The top off my salads. I could forego salad dressing in favor of them. (I know raisins are a no-no!)

I love vegetables and I look at the list closely to make sure I get the carbs right.

Congrats on your accomplishments with Atkins. I should have said that to everyone. I haven't moved about the boards yet but will. I'm rather tired.

Appreciate the support. I'll look for more of your posts as time goes on.

Yes, I read the ingredients. I will hold off on using the 1 packet I bought until further research. I know from the sugar-buster's diet that sugar comes in many forms. I don't recall all of them and know they're not always obvious. I do not want to be beset by something as harmful as this mix when I've tried so hard and the results aren't there. I can do without it, easily! Even the nuts for an extended period of time but hopefully not forever. (Forever's a long time.)

                            Thanks again.

Don't get me wrong ... I use it myself on rare occasions ... but I don't kid myself that it's a "fine" thing to use!
