  • Hello Everyone

    Well, here goes...

I started the Atkins diet on January 25th, 2010 in hopes to take my life back from the weight I put on over a number of years.
In a previous life I was tiny no matter what I ate and then I starting having children. I became ill for my first child which resulted in gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia and hospital bed rest for more than a month. The weight from the pregnancy stayed and never left after each baby (4 of them).

I was stuck at 180lbs for a long time (and hated it), but after major changes in my life (becoming a full time working single mom of 4) I started to put on weight until I hit 'bottom'.
My weight on January 25th was 225lbs. I want to get down to 140lbs, but sometimes I still think that's just a pipe-dream. I'm getting terribly bored of the same foods and I lack ... imagination I suppose on how to get variety.

It takes me A LOT of will power as I have 4 children to feed firstly (ages 11 to 15) so I make their meals and feed them before I do things for myself. I haven't had any of it yet even though it always smells soooooo good

I did not take before pictures or even measurements. I am far too disgusted with myself to even think about doing that unfortunately, so of course I can't see my success at this time.

I lost 15lbs during induction and I'm now a tad stuck so I've decided to go for extended induction.

I have the books of course, I bought them a few days before I started but I am hoping that jumping on board here might help me keep trying and not fall off the wagon.

Thanks for reading my boring book if you made it this far!

    Welcome to ADBB!

Extended Induction isn't likely to "unstick" you.

Moving to OWL would be the best plan.

Being bored with Induction food is a good reason to move to OWL.

        Re: Hello Everyone

Thank you for the replies! I was wondering if I should move to OWL, but I wasn't sure since this is my first time.

I have used some recipes from Linda's, but the big down side is that I have not been able to find "Carbquik" or any other flour substitute such as that. I am in Canada and have looked in 5 different grocery stores as well as Walmart. Does anyone in Canada know where I can find them?

        Thanks again!

You won't find it at a store.

Also, it's not legal until the end of OWL or pre-maintenance, or even maintenance.

          You can mail-order from netrition.com

You also don't really need it.

            Re: Hello Everyone

Some people have a few weeks of no loss after Induction while their body regroups. Sometimes you have to wait it out until your body decides to cooperate. Having said that, many folks have found their weight loss picks up again when they move to Ongoing Weight Loss--you have nothing to lose!

Welcome to the board, KrazE! And congrats on the loss so far!

Fifteen pounds is really good so I think you do need to move up to rung 1. I stalled after 2 weeks too but adding those extra veggies got the weight loss moving again. I'm sure it will for you too.

You do realize that extended induction is just induction.
some people thinks this means that they can try whatever and they stop eating vegetables and start eating crap for their 20carbs. It is not great.

About the carbquick - not sure that you want to eat that much soy. You can make your own baking mixes easily I do that.

Thank you for all the responses!

I am very appreciative of the advice and have moved to OWL Rung 1. I went through more recipes from Linda's site (wonderful place!) and picked up items to try some new things on there.
I also am taking advice from the book which explains other things that I can incorporate into meals (or as snacks) so I am feeling a lot better about moving forward with the weight loss and the addition of foods.

I avoid 'crap for carbs' and read labels carefully so I can balance out the day for food. Sure that slice of pizza smells great, but all it's going to do is make me feel like crap and leave me hungry for the day. I would much rather have a meal of steak with montreal steak spice mix, sauteed mushrooms and 1/4 cup of cottage cheese over a couple bites of pizza any day.

This isn't acceptable until the dairy rung of OWL.

Then I must be reading the book wrong because it gives more items that can be added in OWL on page 174.

I do apologize, but I think I have made a mistake jumping on to the boards and posting.

                      All the best to everyone.

The page number isn't helpful, really. If the book was hardcover or paperback, the page numbers are different.

Is the copyright on your book 2002?

Cottage cheese is an OWL food ... it's added on the dairy rung. Your status indicates Rung 1 ... which is 5 more net carbs of Induction vegetables. You don't add foods in whatever way you want.

This is a support board. At least we try our best. I don't think you made a mistake. We are trying to help.
I see the list on 174 in my book and I have the right book. So those are foods you add when you are done induction.

                            1. More salad and other vegetables on the acceptable foods list
                            2. Fresh cheeses (as well as more aged cheese)
                            3. Seeds and nuts
                            4. Berries
                            5. Wine and other spirits low in carbs
                            6. Legumes
                            7. Fruits other than berries and melons
                            8. Starchy vegetables
                            9. Whole grains

Cottage cheese is dairy, so it's the 2nd rung of OWL.
