  • My First Day!!

    Hello All!!

I am very thankful to have come across this site.
I am a college student who is looking to drop a near 30 pounds ... Within the past months, those pounds have crept upon my waist and I think it was due to my high-carb and sugary snack intake Thank goodness I am starting this journey! My plan is to take ONE DAY at a time, being very mindful and thankful for coming across this program!

Today is the first day of starting the (very) low-carb induction period. I am finding it very hard to find snacks and meals that FIT into my 20 carbs a day induction period! Any advice from anyone?

Thanks ALL and good luck to everyone.
The before and after pictures are mind blowing, but what is more important is that everyone on this forum has had the courage to start something, stick to eat, and reach their goals!

    Peace be with us ALL.

    Welcome to the board..
This is a great place to be and everyone is so helpful.
As for snacks, when I need something quick I eat a few celery sticks, a ounce of chedder cheese, or a couple bites of chicken (I always have it precooked in the fridge)
I know alot of others on the board grab a hard boiled egg..

Are you counting total carbs or net carbs ?

      Re: My First Day!!

Welcome -- depending on whether you are able to cook for yourself or are eating in a cafeteria there are lots of things you can use as snacks. Deviled eggs, hard boiled eggs, rolled up meat with cream cheese spread on it, any meat dipped in some sort of fat (mayo is good), celery with cream cheese, a small salad, cucumber and or radish slices, etc.

If you are snacking because you are hungry try eating something with fat - the fat will help keep you feeling full longer.

      Hope this helps. Good luck.

        Hello Again...
i am actually counting just plain carbs ... my psychologist had read the book and is a firm believer.. I have browsed through the book and i noticed carbs vs. net carbs.

What do you recommend starting induction with? I suppose I will have to dig into the book and dissect each page (after finals this week!) However, I am feeling pretty confident and am being mindful with hope. I am hoping to do well tomorrow... One day at a time.

Also, I have my apartment, So i have access to a fridge and stove, thank goodness!!

        Peace be with us ALL.

              Re: My First Day!!

My advice would be to eat LOTS and LOTS of veggies. Also try to includemeat as well. I know the temptation of junk food, so a suggestion would be to empty all of a non-atkins friendly food from your pantry/fridge. I hope this helps. Welcome to the board and Good Luck!

Thanks for ALL of the advice. I just got home from an awesome workout, feeling not too shabby. I have noticed my headaches have gone. Thank goodness, I hope they stay away!

Did either of you experience any tough headaches or body motions? Just curious!

                    Re: My First Day!!

I had headaches but I think that is mostly from caffeine withdrawal....

I had some body aches and starting taking extra potassium and magnesium supplements. Are you taking any vitamins?

                      Re: My First Day!!

Yes, luckily my Mother is a HEALTH NUT. She has given me the very best vitamins without iron. Day 5 is tomorrow... I am almost expecting the AM and Mid-Afternoon headaches, but maybe I'll get lucky and my body will give me a break. I must admit, I am feeling like my old, HAPPY self again. No "sugar/carb rain cloud" fogging my mood. Sooo Liberatingggg, only encourages me more

Also-- This is definitely an open-ended question that I have been asking a lot of people. Feel free to add advice to the question below:

I am in college, and like most college cats, I have a roommate... My roommate eats VERY unhealthy. I'm talking about ice-cream frozen packaged junk, chips, soda pop... you name it!
The foods are some foods that used to trigger my over eating habits, such as sweets and carbs.
I know my roommate isn't purposely going to eat this junk in front of me, but I am worried that *when that time comes* I will crave the foods and possibly in. I'm not, sure... I know I haven't had any cravings to this day, but I really want to plan ahead and be safe.

I know the situation HASN'T happened yet, and only God knows if I will even crave or want what she is having. I just want to be prepared. Let me know if you have any ideas. I would appreciate them ohhhh soooo much! Maybe I'll just munch on an ounce of cheese wrapped in turkey or chicken when she eats her sweets... that hits the spot for me now'a'days. Oh Atkins, how I value you....

                        >>My roommate eats VERY unhealthy.>>

She/he probably says the same about you.

Bottom line, what you eat is your responsibility (and choice). It's none of his/her business.

                        The reverse is true, too.

                          Re: My First Day!!

Wow. You are completely right. I shouldn't worry about anyone, but myself. I am doing this for me as well and it is working, -FOR ME.- I am happy and I completely agree with your advice, I have to keep taking one day at a time. I am thinking clearly and there is no longer that foggy feeling.

There is no room for judgement, I need to focus on myself... No more worrying about what will happen with incidents at home. I know I am in the right direction of this journey and WILL indeed make the positive and healthy decisions. Induction Day Five tomorrow, but who's counting anyways I feel greattttt!

PS. Thank you Atkinsgal08, I really appreciate your advice. You seem to know your Atkins! I definitely admire that you have been on maintenance since 2005. Hope you enjoy the rest of the night!

                            Day Five.

Day Five has been a little rough, not so sure why. I am pinpointing it on the fact that I forgot my vitamin this morning... I have had a weird urge for something sweet. I looked up so-called induction friendly desserts, and I really just don't trust any of them.

I want to do this the right way, thank God I didn't cave in ... I'm just SO curious as to why I have been feeling like sweets. I 'm thinking it is more of a mental scenario ... I went to the gym, had a good workout. Came home, and found out my friend broke plans on me. Maybe my mind is just creeping into the old ways and it has nothing to do with actual cravings but habit.

Anyways. Day Five. Went well! Induction is totally not too shabby. I mean eggs and chicken and salad with creamy dressing and more chicken. Also have been doing celery , but limiting how much as well as baby pieces of tomato. I can't WAIT to weigh myself on Tuesday
