  • Icky taste in my mouth...

Hi I'm Nadia, this is about the 3rd or 4th time I have started this.
The very first time, I was 20, lost about 35 lbs (that's all I needed to lose). I was actually able to keep them off for a couple of years and very slowly gained it back.
My second time I was about 26, lost about 20 lbs when I got pregnant and had to stop.
Since then I got pregnant again (nursed and everything), and that's when I lost complete control of my weight and self control.
While nursing I got hungrier and hungrier, and basically gave myself permission to eat anything and everything.
I've tried it a couple of times since then in the last year or so, but I give up after the 3rd or 4th day.
I'm 32, married with 2 kids. I', 5'4" and weight 195 lbs (that was my weigh last thursday when I started this again). I do have to admit I have managed to keep 10 lbs off since last year.
It's day 6 of carb-free and I have this awful taste in my mouth I now remember from the last 2 times i tried this (and stuck to it).
I LOVE food!!! I love pasta with creamy sauces, pizza, and just about anything with cheese on it.
This time is a lot harder because of my kids, I have to cook and feed them foods I'm not supposed to eat. They often don't finish their food and I hate wasting food, it's been very hard for me to just throw it out. I grew up with a mother and grandmother who made me clean my plate at every meal. Wasting was not an option.

I hope to find the support I need to take it day-by-day... as well as share recipes, meal options, etc.

    Welcome to ADBB!

    >> It's day 6 of carb-free>>

Atkins isn't "carb free". You are reading Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (2002), right?

    >> This time is a lot harder because of my kids, I have to cook and feed them foods I'm not supposed to eat.>>

This might be an opportunity to feed them better, to!

    >>They often don't finish their food>>

Give them less and they can have more?

    >>I give up after the 3rd or 4th day.>>

Why? It's important you know that so you can plan around whatever it is that causes you to stumble.

I cook for the kids in my house too so I know that can be hard. But it does get much easier everyday. Just stick with it.

Re: Icky taste in my mouth...

My sister struggled with her weight for a long time as a mom because of the "I don't want to waste food" deception. I asked her these questions:
When was that food actually wasted? What I mean is - was it wasted when it was thrown in the trash after dinner, or was it already wasted the moment you put too big of a serving on the plate? If you regularly throw food away after dinner, cut the servings in half and encourage the kids ask for more if they are still hungry. Not only does this cut down on wasted food, but the people you are serving will likely adopt a more conscious eating habit.
The other question I asked my sister was: If you are putting extra calories into a body that has no need for them - and in fact causes that body to suffer, isn't that a greater waste than dropping it into the trash?
        Hope this is helpful.
btw, after our talk she lost 20 pounds

Re: Icky taste in my mouth...

Hi there. I'm a mother of 3 small kids also (2,4,6) and I've been there... done that. I nursed each and every one of my kids (13mos, 20mos, 18mos), so I KNOW nursing hunger. Never been so hungry in my life! Worse than pregnancy. I didn't lose ANY weight while breastfeeding, unlike some friends who shed the weight quickly.

Now is your time. You are doing this to better yourself, better your life, and ultimately better the future of your children. Just like the benifits of breastfeeding, you want the best for your kids. Losing weight, being healthy is the best gift you can give them. Hopefully causing yourself to live a LONG, healthy life.

With that being said, it was hard for me to adjust to not eating off their plates too. It wasn't because I was afraid to "waste" something... it was because I wanted to eat it. I'd make mac&cheese and eat what was left over in the pan, b/c I love mac&cheese. I'd make toast in the mornings and along with eating my pieces I hoped one of the kids didn't want all of their's b/c then I could eat it.

For me it wasn't about wasting... it was about wanting. What I've done now is ... instead of making extra toast, I make just enough for them to eat. I'll give my eldest daughter 3 half pieces and my baby half a slice... if either wants more, I then make it. With mac&cheese, I give them bigger bowls and make sure ALL the mac&cheese is out of the pan... if they don't eat it all, so be it... the rest goes to the dogs.

Good luck with your plan. Stick to you and you'll find yourself being a happier, healthier mom for your children.
          Mini goals:
          1: out of 190's 4/5/10
2: 179 pounds (no longer obese)
3: Run one mile without stopping
          4: 165 pounds (driver's license weight)
          5: size 14 jeans
6: 149 pounds (no longer over weight)
          7: 140 pounds (prepregnancy weight)
          135= weight on wedding day
123= weight on high school graduation

            Thank you all,
I'm working on the portions with my kids. It's not that I give them too much, is that they're kids! Sometimes they clean their plate and ask for seconds, others they literally two bites and they're done.
We actually do have "good" eating habits, my problem is the quantity. They eat well balanced meals with lots of vegetables, no snacking in betwee, no sweets or junkfood (unless it's halloween or a birthday party). Their beverage of choice is water which I'm very proud of, and I hope to completely break them away from some misconceptions about food i've been living my life with.
I'm actually feeling pretty good now, other that the ketone taste in my mouth, but that just motivates me to keep it up, and it's my signal that I'm doing this right.
I said I wasn't going to weight myself until 2 weeks into it, I have 7 more days to go!!!

Do you like dill pickles? If so that's a good way to get a bad taste out of your mouth.

Re: Icky taste in my mouth...

Welcome back to Atkins!!! You can chew parsley (celery works for me also) or brush your teeth and tongue several times a day -- drinking more water seems to help me get rid of that taste. If you eat pickles try to find the no-sugar added brands. Mt Olive makes them and I've seen a couple other brands, but I prefer the Mt Olive brand.

Have you read the 2002 Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution book? Linda's site has a great recipe for alfredo sauce -- over zucchini noodles it tastes wonderful!

                Good luck this time.
