  • Back to square one

Hello, my name is Sue, and I'm here for a second start A little history about me...

Three years ago I started Atkins at my all time highest weight, 226 lbs. I had been eating a 1200 calorie low fat diet and going to the gym for 4-6 hours a week, doing half cardio/half weight lifting. I could not lose weight, and I was frustrated. I never expected Atkins to do anything for me, I had already given up mentally, but decided to try it anyway.

I discovered that I was terribly addicted to sugar and white flour, and my body THRIVED on Atkins! I lost 40 pounds in less than 4 months, my sleep apnea improved, and I was full of energy. I continued with Atkins and over the next several months lost another few pounds. But after a year and a half on Atkins, I had a minor spinal surgery, couldn't get up to cook, started eating fast food, because it was what was brought to me, and as soon as sugar and flour hit my blood stream, I was on a slippery slope and couldn't find my footing again.

As the new two years passed, and I ate whatever I wanted, I slowly gained back the weight I had lost. When the scale hit 225.5, I sat down and cried. I cut out sugar and grains, and started restricting, although not counting, my carb intake. Three weeks in, I had a cheat day, I ate sushi, and had the worse sugar withdrawal headache the next day:-( Ugh! Then a letter arrived in the mail, saying that my husband's cholesterol has continued to rise although he has pretty much stuck to low carb eating since we started three years ago) and the doctor wants him on medication. Additionally, my sleep apnea has gotten much worse, and I know we both need this for our health.

So while I've been easing back into low carb eating for the past three weeks, today is official day 1 of re-induction for the both of us!

Ironically, I joined this forum three years ago, lurked and read a lot, but this is my first public post!

        Re: Back to square one

Hi and welcome back to Atkins --

Congratulations on making the decision to get back on plan! I hope you have the 2002 DANDR (Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution) - it's the edition we follow on this site. Exercise, take a no-iron vitamin and drink a minimum of 64 ounces of pure water. Check Linda's recipe site – wonderful recipes that will keep you from eating the same thing over and over --
        http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/

Also many people start a journal to keep track of themselves. It’s also a great place to meet new people or find old friends http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/journal-chats/. Also, the STAC (Second Time Around Club) might be of interest to you.

If you need anything we’re here to help you!! Good luck.
        Carole

          Re: Back to square one

          Thanks for the welcome

Yes, I have/follow the 2002 DANDR, though after three years, I went on to experimenting with things that I don't think were are common/available in Atkin's time (pure liquid sucralose, various plant fibers, etc.) But for now, it's good 'ol induction for me

Back to taking my vitamins, starting out with at least 64 ounces of water, hoping to build to 100, and I'm well familiar with Linda's site. I use a lot of her recipes, or variations of them, in my bulk cooking, which really helps me to stay on plan I posted my first journal/blog entry, and I'm off to pursue the STAC!

Thank you It's funny to come back to something that was a WOL for so long, that I thought I had all figured out, and find that there is more to learn;-) Hopefully I can make it to the finish line this time!
