  • Need help from experienced hikers!!

    Hello all!

My dh and I are planning to participate in a 2-day hike to the summit of the Zugsptize in late July. Of course, we'll be doing many, many, MANY hikes over the coming months to prepare for that.

I asked my doc yesterday about snacks that I could tote in my backpack to help give me energy while I'm hiking. I'm diabetic (on a non-hypoglycemic inducing med) and he knows I follow a controlled carb plan. His advice? Apple juice, Power Bars and peanut-butter crackers.

So, my dear ADBB friends, I would like some other advice from people who might suggest things I will actually eat.

Any ideas other than almonds? Of course I want to avoid anything that has sugar alcohol in it. That side effect is the last thing I want to deal with while I'm out in the woods!

    Thanks in advance!!
    Terrie

    Cheese

actually anything off the list of food on the rung you are on ...I find that most food travels well if you want to carry it ...

celery with cream cheese and olives
bell pepper stuffed with cream cheese
    jicama whatever you like

One of my favorites is baked cheese at www.specialcheese.com Foil packets of tuna or salmon, boiled eggs, tins of deviled ham. I make an unsweetened granola using oats, nuts, and seeds to snack on.

don't know where you are in your Atkins but you can make low carb gorp with nuts seeds dried berries ( get sugar free ones) how about some whole grains toasted and tossed in too if you are on thehigher carb levels. nut butter you makeyourself or buy. some low carb rolls either Not2Lates induction revolution rolls or NulloMondos flax bread. if you got a fanny cooler you can take some eggs too. I pack a waterbottle frozen sideways laying in the freezer the night before 1/2 full and then fiied the morning of the hike with water to drink as I hike in the pack as my chiller since I know there will be no frig to freshen the chill pack on the way back and I hate dead weight hiking. then I can have anything I want on the way out and save my dried stuff for the return trip.

            have a great time hiking!

Swimmom, what an exciting trip. I use to do a lot of hiking and loved it. In July you should be pretty close to pre maintenance as you only have 40 pounds to go, and there will be lots of choices then. Cheese sticks are good and you have some of the best salami in the world in Germany, and dried fruit mixed with your almonds makes a delicious trail mix.
I hope you tell us all about it when you get done.
