  • Can't Believe It's Not Butter Light

Everyone asks this question and I never pay attention to the answer because I always use real butter....but here I am, being a jerk, and asking it myself.

I Can't Believe It's Not Butter--Light; seems to have 0 carbs and tastes deliciousssss (I ran out of butter and used my roommate's tub of this and hot damn it was good). But I feel like there's something in it I'm not supposed to have. Can someone jog my memory?

If it has trans fats or hydrogenated fats, it's not allowed.

Ok, the tub says zero trans fats, I'll just check on the hydrogenated fat. Thanks!

Water, vegetable oil blend (liquid soybeans oil, partially hydrogenated soybean oil), sweat cream buttermilk, salt, gelatin, vegetable mono and diglycerides, soy lecithin, lactic acid, natural and artificial flavors, vitamin a, and beta cartene. The package says 37% vegetable oil spread.

Probably too many ingredients to be "Atkins friendly," I suppose. Maybe I'll check out regular CBINB?

Butter is better, but this is so spready and salty and doesn't taste like my refrigerator! A delicious combination.

I don't keep butter in the frig, but then I really don't use it spread on anything.... Anyhow, my cousin has a "butter bell". It's a ceramic thingy that keeps the butter fresh and spreadable, without soaking up refrigerator smells.

Re: Can't Believe It's Not Butter Light

I found this on the I Can't Believe... website. Just FYI, for your health

How can a product be labeled 0 grams of trans fat when it still contains partially hydrogenated oil?

A very small amount of Partially Hydrogenated oil is used to provide the structure needed for the product, but the amount of trans fat is less than 0.5 grams per serving. Based on FDA labeling regulations related to fats, less than one-half gram of fat is declared 0 grams per serving.

My mom has something similar, a big butter dish. But I am quite a spreader and butter dipper so this really works for me.

Thanks for the heads up, dot.

Wonder what they consider a "serving"? Funny how they get around the labeling laws isn't it? I betcha that if you are "quite the spreader and dipper" that you are consuming more than their "serving size" in one sitting!

I don't eat anything with hydrogenized or partially hydrogenized oil in it. That stuff'll kill ya! They can justify it all they want, but if someone said "yeah, it's poison but we just use enough to make the product edible" then forget it. Cuz that's what their saying. Get thee to the butter aisle asap and back away from the frankenmarg.

I'm not so worry about all the different oils, etc. One day stuff kills, the next day it doesn't. Yesterday cell phones don't give you cancer, today new reporst think they do. What the deal breaker will be is when I get to the grocery store, what is cheapest

It's not the type of oil, it's the hydrogenation process. I forget what it does to you. Instantly hardens arteries or something. I agree that one day something will kill you and the next day it won't. Whether I listen or not usually depends on whether or not I love the food in question. However, in Canada they are demanding that all companies remove hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils from foods by the end of this year. They are taking it pretty seriously. Since we have a few choices here I just buy the non-hydrogenated.
