    Food fixation

YES I CONFESS I FIXATE ON FOOD!!!!

and you know what? ..rather than pretending it is not an important part of my life and trying to avoid it to loose weight ..I realized that for me anyway...embracing food in it's entire glory has helped me succeed so far ...

I know that when I was going through all my moments of freaking out ...trying to get this right ..people were kind enough to share their own experiences and sometimes someone said something that triggered me in the right direction. So if this helps then I have given a little something something back!

I have said this before and I will say this again ...
it is soo important to eat fresh food in a great variety when it is seasonally fresh and as close to the source as possible...Everything that goes in your body should count for something important..and I am not talking about just vits and minerals, I am taking pleasure as well (remember I love wine )...

Food and it thought and preparation are a big part of my daily life. I don't "stock up" and sometimes I shop several times a week. I am as busy as anyone else ..trust me..and we do not have a huge income so I do budget... my priorities include making sure that when we sit down to a meal in this house it is a whole body experience ..of the best I can find.
Food is a top priority in my life and I personally think it as important if not more important that most anything ...including exercise ...if you do not fuel your body with good food nothing else matters ..because you become run down, grumpy, overweight and miserable ....I know!!! that is what brought me here in the first place.

Learning about foods, the history, the nuances, finding new recipes. Making new friends, new and healthier family traditions, through the adventure and quest for food is a wonderful thing!..food brings people together ...look at us here all caring and learning from each other? ..yes it is an obsession and in my minds eye like exercise it is a healthy obsession!

When you learn to make food a priority and learn to find and prepare the best of the best ..you actually save tons of money. and more time because your body is healthier you do not need to go to as many medical appts!!! I do eat well and buy the best I can find. But my food bills are extremely low.

some of the secrets I have found to save money, keep my weight down and gain a tremendous amt of satisfaction in my life is

    1. I shop often for fresh items and usually (other than spices and condiments) buy only what I need for a couple of days. I find that I use what I have and rarely have to toss anything out. As I said I am as busy as anyone. But this is a priority to me so I do it.

    2. I shop in "ethnic" markets, not only does this save me MASSIVE amt of money!!! It saves a ton of time to run into a tiny market, buy just what you need and run out the door. Instead of a huge grocery store where it becomes opportunity to purchase more than you need and takes forever to find anything. I get recipes, "how do you make this?" freebies for being curious, personal service and best of all new friends.
One question I have learned to ask when getting a recipe in these markets is "how much of this do you eat in a meal" WE EAT HUGE PORTIONS in the States (something we are hard pressed to hide) So asking this is a good way to gain perspective. If you ask about portions, you will be stunned at the cultural differences and really understand how we have gotten so fat in the US! little bits of lots of differing kinds of food actually keeps you thin ..how cool is that?

    3. when you buy fresh healthy naturally low carb, unprocessed food and cook it yourself enjoying the aroma and the visual appeal as well as the flavor..when make every bite a conscious one, you eat only when you are hungry and stop as soon as you are content. You eat less. Period. Then save money while buying quality!

so yes I a fixated on food ...not just eating it ..but every aspect of it ..it is to me one of the most binding, sensual, sexy and fulfilling things you can do yourself and others ..so why not?

I gain more pleasure from cooking food, giving you a bite and watching your face as you savor my efforts to please you and make you healthy...than eating it myself!

So there you go ....this is just my view of things and not mean't to be anything but what it is offered as ...I hope it helps

    thank you guys

I visit the grocery store twice a week (there are several on the way to and from the office so I don't have to go out of my way). It's a good habit because some stores have in-store specials that aren't advertized in the circular, let alone in the store itself. My boss was raving about a deal she got on leg of lamb about 4 months ago---bought a 15 pound leg for $9.00. And I've gotten similar, though not as good, deals.

I learned early on that buying your food and cooking it yourself is alot cheaper than buying prepared stuff. Though there are times when I do buy prepared items like rotissiere chicken. When I buy that, I make sure the $ 5.99 I spent is completely used. So, when I get home, I carve the bird up. It saves me time from carving it up later and I can portion it all out. I save the bones for stock.

I save the bones and tough parts of all meats I buy. When I have enough, I toss them into a big pot with an onion and 2 ribs of celery, pour water to cover and boil it into stock. Some folks are very particular about their stock and use only chicken bones for chicken stock, beef bones for beef stock, pork bones for pork stock. But I don't. I toss whatever I have into the pot. If I have leftover vegetable peelings they go into the stock pot too. When it's all boiled down and simmered, I skim off the fat, strain out the solids and I have my own meat stock that I use in soups, gravies, etc.

About portion sizes, yes we eat HUGE portions! I'm certainly guilty of it. That's why the posts that read "Lettuce is like 1 net carbs per cup. So why can't I eat more than 3 cups of it?" make me nervous. I had a normal weight friend who used to eat low cal products. Why? Because she would be able to eat 4 pieces of the low cal item as opposed to eating only 1 or 2 of the regular cal item. Her motto was "quantity matters".

      Re: Food Fixation

My name is Paige ... and I'm a food-fixator, too. (Altogether now: "Hello Paige!")

I plan trips around when and where I'll eat. "Well, if I leave at 7:00 I can stop at that great little diner in Nowheresville for breakfast. Their lunch isn't nearly as good."

My fiance can't understand why I ask, "what will you want for dinner?" at 7:00 in morning when he's not hungry and hasn't figured out what he'll be doing an hour from now. Well, duh -- I'm planning my shopping!

The two books I'm reading now are "Garlic and Sapphires," about Ruth Reichl's years as the New York Times food critic, and "Julie and Julia," about a woman cooking her way through a Julia Child cookbook.

The food forums are my favorite part of ADBB.

The other forum I participate in is about restaurants in my hometown.

I used to be the copy editor for a food and dining magazine.

And (this is sad) ... my hobby/side job is reviewing restaurants.

Gee, ya wonder why I gained weight!?

I'm right there with ya Heidi -- and I'm proud to be food-obsessed too!

Oh I'll join with you food fanciers too! I spend lots of time planning, shopping, preparing meals... and experimenting with different ingredients. It's an enormous pleasure.

Here in Italy we have fantastic veggies and wonderful cheeses, so am lucky in that. The meat isn't as good as in many other countries (except pork which is fantastic) but the fish is terrific.

I'll be forever grateful to my Italian mother in law, who allowed me to absorb her way and style of cooking. Boy oh boy, do Italians know how to cook!

            Re: Food Fixation

I love cooking even more now that i've found you guys! I've spent my life fixated on my food, but it's different now. It's not about what I can find to put in my mouth RIGHT NOW. But, planning something delicious that I'll have later. It's almost as if all the planning that goes into my meals now satisfies some part of my brain. I might have eaten between meals ...maybe 5 or 6 times since starting Atkins. I usually eat 3 meals a day...and I'm perfectly happy. I'm really lucky that the cafeteria at the university where I work prepares alot of fresh food, some of it right in front of you. Plus, everything they have has the nutritional value posted. There are lots of choices too...but at the VERY least they have a fresh salad bar and a deli bar with tuna and chicken salads.

Heidi, the way you make food sound so sensual has really, really helped me this go around...and I am FOREVER grateful to you.

I nearly shed a tear reading this thread...

I am fascinated by food, cooking is practically a religious experience for me... I use time spent cooking in my kitchen as stress relief--and I love looking at pictures people post in this forum of food they actually cooked. Food in commercials and magazines just don't do the same thing for me--I guess it's how my husband prefers his adult models unairbrushed....

Food is one of my true loves, and you're so right, Heidi! I love Atkins because it lets me accept my love of food and let it thrive as a beautiful part of my life rather than something that only causes shame and disappointment.
No stats. Not weighing anymore ever. Will post "before and after" pictures when I want to. The end.

                          Vigilance, not perfection.

OMG I LOVE YOU!!! you absolutely understand!!!!!!!!

I knew when I got fat I could not give food up!!! I just had to learn how to really truly love it... not be ashamed of it or take it for granted....then finding Atkins as well and being able to eat all these wonderful foods and still loose weight ..was mindblowing

I swear I thought I had a disease because I lost all my weight and was having all these foods!!!

each bite we put in our mouths should have significance, meaning and should be appreciated .but never over done....just like a love for anything it needs to be nurtured and respected ....

I can stare at a perfect artichoke for quite a while appreciating its form and size...and what I will do with it.... and almost get embarassed when someone sees me...

the thing is ..it is sensual and wonderful and ...well I need some now!
