I ate alot of fish when I was pregnant too. I couldn't go 2 days without craving Capt. D's of all places. I am sure it was the tartar and vinegar. but The doctors didn't say anything. If I could eat, they wanted me too. Throwing up for 8 months sucked! I gained only 16 lbs. I was alll belly. I ended up 5 lbs lighter than when I got pregnant because of it. Of course, in the middle of my fish cravings the Capt. D's closed down for 6 weeks cause someone ate there and died. DH forbid me from going back when it re-opened. It was heart breaking for the pregnant woman.

      Re: Fish?

I came upon some fresh tilapia today, so I bought it, brought it home and fileted it. I really didn't like it, and resorted to the turkey in the fridge. My 5 yr old son loved the grilled fish, so I guess i'll be trying different types from now on since I know at least someone will be eating it. Thank you all very much for helping me out!

          Re: Fish?

Try flounder, its very light! We do a lot of fishing. I find that no matter what type of fish we catch, if I soak it for an hour or so in some heavy cream it removes any fishy smell/taste. My BF is not much of a fish eater either and he loves it after its been soaked. I also got him to try grilled Mahi Mahi and fresh grilled Tuna and he likes both of those! Grilled fresh Tuna is way less fishy smeling than the canned stuff! And tastes 1000 times better.

But Heidi is right, if it smells really fishy, don't eat it! Its old. Another thing to take note of, if you are buying your fish from a market and the head is still on, look at the eyes, if the eyes look cloudy, the fish is old, avoid it!

            Re: Fish?

The tilapia I bought at Walmart was packaged 2 together, they were fresh and whole, head and all. I took the tips you guys have given me by checking their eyes and of course smell testing for the fishiness. It smelled ok. If I had been blindfolded I still would have said fish, but wasn't like some overpowering stench. It didn't really taste "fishy", but I could still tell it was fish. I am going to get my father to order a fresh tuna for me to try. I really do enjoy canned tuna, so maybe fresh will be just as good. Regardless, i'm proud that I did so well just handling and fileting a whole fish, hehe... typically when i'm handling meat it leaves a grease film on my hands. I for some reason expected that it would be oily or slimey, but it was neither! It was a great experience. Took a bit of fear of the unknown out of it. I'm definitely going to try soaking something in the cream next time.

Good for you on fileting your own fish! Maybe you'd like a meatier fish like Haddock. Haddock steaks are awesome especially grilled. The texture is more like a tender pork chop than a fish. Fresh Tuna is awesome! It is nothing like the stuff they cram in a can!

                Re: Fish?

I'm going to scope out my local butcher over the next couple of months for different fish, as well as different meats. I'm beginning a culinary university in Louisville in September, so i'm trying to get a good feel for a lot of different meat items. I'm anticipating a lot of variety there, so i'd like to be as prepared as possible.

I'm wanting to focus on pastry arts at first, so i'm really scared of having to taste test stuff! I would love to eventually pen my own low carb cookbook. It comes so much easier when you live the lifestyle and know of the struggles we go through trying to find the right ingredients and what to do with them. I want to pay back all the goodness that i've received (especially here)!

George Stella's wife is a pastry chef! She has managed to convert lots of great dessert recipes into low carb ones! And their family has lost a ton of weight on low carb! Both George, his wife and their 2 sons!
