  • LIVER and ICE CREAM

Don't panic I am not suggesting eating them together.

Butcher tells me liver should be dusted in flour before frying. My question is, would the tiny amount of flour used really be significant on Atkins?

If my boyfriend has an ice cream (or any kind of dessert) in a restaurant, and I have a teaspoonful, and count it as one carb (?) is that acceptable on this WOE?

    Re: LIVER and ICE CREAM

The words "slippery slope" come to my mind. One carb of flour is certainly not going to cause you any problem. But, allowing yourself any amount of sugar or flour is a dangerous idea to me. First a dusting on just liver. Then .... If it's me before long I'm using flour everywhere and having whole bowls of ice cream. But that is just me.

But I suspect that is you also. So my vote is no! It is not ok.

This may not be what you want to hear, but I would have to say no to both questions also. As has already been mentioned, its all just a slippery slope. You are best off just staying strong and knowing that you havent had it.

Once you have something that is not legal atkins food, its so easy to keep doing it.

      I hope you stay strong.

        Re: LIVER and ICE CREAM

I've made liver without flour. I'm not sure why you'd need it, actually.

I'd stay away from the ice cream or dessert too. Maybe on maintenance you could get away with a teaspoon here and there, but as Hudson says, it could be the first step down a slippery slope. Do you want to undo all your hard work for a bite of ice cream? Just a thought.

I agree with the others. It's a VERY slippery slope.

I pan fry liver all the time without the flour, and it tastes just as good.

When you get to the dairy rung, you might want to try low carb ice cream. However, I have to stay away from even the low carb stuff. I cannot stop at one serving...and it sets off all kinds of cravings.

It's just a slow form of self inflicted torture, and I wouldn't do it.

From my experience LC Ice Cream is the absolute worst. I went for well over a year without trying it. Then I tried it and it quickly became a problem. I would buy a single serving for $2. Then I would think for $3 I can get an entire half gallon. Then I would eat the half gallon in 2 days. The LC Ice Cream (all of it that I have tried) is Real Ice Cream trying to fake you out.

The flour will help it brown (which I don't think it needs to be...) and it will also help thicken any sauce you make from the pan juices. I don't flour liver when I cook it. I do dry it by patting the excess moisture from the liver slices with alot of paper towels. That seems to help it.

Gosh. I never before saw such unanimity on this Board!

I'm sorry if I didn't make myself clear, but I wasn't planning on buying any ice cream, just saying if I had a very small teaspoon of whatever my boyfriend has, and ONLY when in a restaurant, so I got the taste of it on my tongue, fool myself into thinking I've had something.

Bottom line: everyone is saying this is absolutely a no-no!

Yes, because once you get the taste for the "forbidden fruit" anything can happen. I have suffered with it before and it took me a long long time to get back into the swing of things and rid myself of the cravings that come from trying something that I wasnt allowed.

                  Sorry if it sounds harsh.

                      Re: LIVER and ICE CREAM

I hadn't had liver for years till I saw it on offer at the local greasy spoon we got to on Sundays, had it and loved it so much that I've had it for lunch, dinner and lunch these last two days and again tomorrow. (This is because the tray of it I bought in Tesco has to be eaten within so many days.)

                      -------------------------------------------------------
                      Rich: No, not harsh.

I suppose there are two schools of thought regarding sweet or forbidden things and Atkins. Once school favours having substitutes (using artificial stuff to mimic sugar etc) and tasters (e.g. having one square of 85% cocoa chocolate once in while) and the other recommends killing the sweet tooth stone dead by going totally cold turkey on it.

There are pros and cons to each approach. My recent horrendous experience with Splenda has taught me a lesson.

At a meal out recently, I took a half-teaspoon of cream off a friend's dessert, and that was enough to stop the rising feelings of resentfulness and envy.

helena, before you do anything, small spoonful or otherwise, consider where you are, where you've been and where you want to be. you have gone many many days without having chocolate only to succumb to it. the temptation of even one bite might be too much for you. why tempt yourself in that way? it might not bother others like it does you. later on as you get stronger, things might change, but i would say right now, this would not be a good move for you.

                              MoG doesn't like liver????

I love liver...especially chopped chicken liver! But I remember my mom used to make a liver dish when I was a kid. Beef or pork liver, sliced into finger length pieces. Then each piece was rolled in bacon. A toothpick secured the bacon to the liver. And it was fried until the bacon was crispy and the liver was cooked. Gosh....it's been a looooooong time since I had that!
