American cheese

I bought some Kraft Singles American cheese for the kids at Sam's and to save on space in the fridge, I took all 3 packages out of the box and threw it away. Not sure if this is an acceptable cheese to eat or if it's considered a "cheese food" product. Anyone know? Thanks.

Do you have the ingredients list to hand, Jenny?

I know that the Kraft cheese singles we get in the UK are processed, however I am not sure if the US version is the same as what we get.

I wouldn't eat that stuff--usually it has sugar or fillers in it that you don't find in "regular" cheese. And who knows what else? I'm afraid of a perishable food that can last for years in a fridge...

I just buy a HUGE block of good cheese (I buy Tillamook) when it's on sale, and I just slice it into one ounce slices. Occasionally I will use pre-shredded, but I prefer whole cheese that's relatively healthy.

Kraft makes some cracker sliced stuff, if that's what you mean...

Are you brand loyal?

I would go for cheese that is a bit more expensive, and more like homemade. Or even buy the "store brand" cheese that's in block form.

the correct name for real cheese top of the line American is Pasturized Processed American Cheese. American is a blend of cheddar and colby if it has that label. other american cheeses have other cheeses in the mix.

the words we need to avoid on cheese labels are cheese food, imitation cheese, and cheese product.

Whey contains a fairly substantial amount of lactose, so the added whey in this is driving the carbs up a bit. It's not that hard to find a 0 carb/0 sugar American Cheese. I buy Kraft Deli Deluxe:

if you could see the orginal wrapper you would see the word cheese product on the deli deluxe stuff so you know it isn't allowed.

2big, you mean the Kraft American Cheese Singles wrapper, correct? I've got the Deli Deluxe stuff right in front of me. It says:

Pasteurized Process American Cheese.

and, as such, is definitely legal during all phases.

oops the top one in your list whichever one that is if it is plain one. Kraft makes american cheese, american cheese food, and american cheese product, so we want our American to say cheese and not food or product.

I buy the deli deluxe from kraft, they really are much better tasting than the kraft singles. My son loves them!

This whole american cheese thing confuses me since we get nothing here called that..but we do get Kraft cheese slices here and they are listed as a 'cheese product'. Kraft also has natural cheeses, that are just real cheddar, sliced. Not individually wrapped, and have just a regular cheese texture and not the texture of the Kraft slices. Are the 'american' slices the individually wrapped ones? and do they have the same texture as regular cheddar (more brittle, not as pliable as singles).

I'm just curious because we do have one product here that seems to be similar to the singles, but looks to me like it has legal ingredients. It's called 'Deluxe Cheddar slices. .

What is it in a process cheese food or product that makes it illegal I'm just curious to know if these are ok? They show as 1g of carbs.

I'm hopefully going to be in buffalo in the next month so i'm going to have to check out the American cheese to see what everyone is referring too LOL.
