  • Holy Guacamole!

    Anyone see this news article:
    http://www.suntimes.com/news/nation/...113006.article

They're actually suing KraftFoods because the guacamole dip contains about 2% avocado! Sheesh!

Well, I'm glad I don't have to buy that modified food starch-soybean oil-high fructose corn syrup-avocado flavoring mess. I can make my own guacamole, provided the avocados are okay.

I like my guacamole to be alittle chunky. Others like it smooth. I like it tart with alittle heat. Others don't. This is my favorite guacamole recipe. I like to eat it with faux-jitas, with jicama slices, as a condiment for chicken or on it's own.

    Chunky Guacamole
    3 Haas avocados
    1/4 cup chopped onion
    1 garlic clove, finely minced
    1 lime, juiced
    1 jalapeno pepper, chopped
    1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
    1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro
    1/4 cup chopped tomato

Into a non-reactive bowl, combine the garlic, lime juice, jalapeno pepper, and onion. Set aside while you prepare the avocados.

Slice two of the avocadoes, and mash the flesh into the lime juice mixture. The remaining avocado chop into chunks. Fold it and the cumin, cilantro and tomato into the mashed mixture. Serve.

    What's your favorite guacamole recipe?

    Re: Holy Guacamole!

i love love love love love guacamole-anything with avacado actually.

    just curious- what are faux-jitas?

Also-interesting side note- The last 2 times I went to the doctor my good cholesterol was in the top 5 he'd ever seen- and he's been in practice for 30 years!!!! When he asked me what I ate and i got to the 2 avacodos a week- he said "Well there you go, that explains it!!!!"

As far as a recipe- i use a store bought powder mix that you add to the avacados- cheating, i know, but still delicious

Mmmmm, avocados. I love making my own guac anyway. I pretty much just mush it up until it's little chunky with a fork and squeeze some lemon juice over. Throw in some garlic and hot sauce and i'm ready.

          Re: Holy Guacamole!

I only discovered avocados in the summer, i had never had one before in my life! Now i'm an addict. I've never had guacomole but am having a Xmas party next weekend and figured I'd try making guacomole.

Megs, would this recipe be ok if I left out the cilantro? I can't stand the stuff

faux-jitas are fajitas only you use lettuce leaves in place of the tortillas. Sort of like faux-ritos (burritos where the filling is wrapped in lettuce leaves rather than tortillas)

sadie, you can leave out the cilantro. Frankly, I'm not a big cilantro fan, but this is one of the few recipes I can actually eat it in without getting that soapy taste.

              Re: Holy Guacamole!

Life without gucamole is just like Christmas without presents, snow, and kids fighting over the remote control.

That's utterly rediculous that companies short change their ingredients. Goes to show, fresh and homemade is best if the lable says otherwise. As for the people sueing, I'm thinking its for the sake of the consumers being ripped and not for the general purpose of gaining extra cash.

Read the ingredients and see if it really does contain avocadoes or if it's one of these fake guacamoles.

                    Re: Holy Guacamole!

If you have a Trader Joes nearby look for Trader Joes brand of guacamole called 'Avocado's Number Guacamole". It is fabulous, and it is pretty darn inexpensive. It would cost more to make it, which I do occasionally. It comes in two sealed pouches so you dont have to use it all at once.

I like the minimalist approach to guacamole. I want to taste the avocado. A chef from a mexican restaurant gave me this recipe:
                          avocado
                          salt
                          pepper
serrano chile minced (remove seeds if you like it mild, keep them if you like it spicier)
                          red onion minced (small amount)
                          lime juice (fresh)
                          mash together with a fork

                            Re: Holy Guacamole!

I take 2 HAAS avacados, cut them in half lengthwise, pop out the seed, scoop the meat out into a bowl, mash it up with a fork.......I take one jalapeno pepper, cut the stem off, cut it lengthwise, deseed it, put it in a chopper and chop it finely, toss into bowl with avacado......take maybe a quarter of an onion, put it in the chopper, chop it finely, toss into bowl with avacado.....take maybe a quarter of a tomato, deseed it, put it in the chopper, chop it finely, toss into bowl with avacado.......add a pinch of salt to the bowl, squeeze a half of a lemon into the bowl and mix it all together...........

Place some plastic wrap on top of the bowl but use your hand to push it flat against the guacamole so air doesnt get to it, put it in the fridge for a few minutes to let the flavors marinate together (i usually let it sit about 20 mins while I'm cooking the meat or whatever)...then pull it out and serve.

I like it best with chicken or seasoned skirt steak....very yummy.....
