  • Question About Stevia

I am wondering if people are still using Stevia as a sweetener besides Splenda. I have been looking up recipes and lots of them list Splenda as an ingredient. I get headaches everytime I injest Splenda so I really want to stay away from it. There is a great cucumber asian salad recipe and a poppy seed dressing recipe but both call for Splenda. Could Stevia be a suitable substitute?
    Thanks!

    Re: Question About Stevia

I don't know about 'suitable', but I use stevia about 99% of the time I need a sweetener. I used to use Splenda but after my son was born I noticed that when I drank it, his pee would smell very strongly of eggs. Not sure why, but not something I wanted to deal with for the next 2+ years for every diaper change. Stevia takes some getting used to - practice to make sure you don't use too much, but when you've got it right one of those little bottles can last a year or more! I've also cut back on my total sweetener use. It's funny how I like the taste of plain tea now..

Sorry, I rambled. I'm sure it's not 'legal' or part of a 'clean' induction plan, but "I" don't consider it cheating for me..

      Re: Question About Stevia

Stevia is fine to use as a sweetener on inductionas far as I know Melissa. the limits are still the same though. I also use it, though only about 50% of the time. I do bake with it but mix it with other sweeteners. I've never used it on it's own in cooking/baking as a sweetener.

I don't think it is affected by heat, so if you are fine with the taste (it's definately an aquired taste IMO), then i would try it for cooking and in your dressings.

        Re: Question About Stevia

I have used Stevia before and the taste didn't bother me. I just bought some so I will experiment with some recipes and see how it goes.

          Re: Question About Stevia

I use stevia in powder form, very tiny amounts, as it's soooo sweet. As far as taste substitution, I like it better than chemical alternatives, but when it comes to cooking, experimentation will tell the tale.
