  • Cornish Game Hens--Little chickens or an imitation of one?!?!?!?

So, I was browsing through the grocery store with DH today and came across frozen Cornish Game Hens. I've seen them before, but never had the inclination of buying one.

Does it taste like chicken? I'm assuming you cook it the same way as chicken, but maybe not as long since they're small. Also, do you buy one hen per person or what??

Any ideas or experiences with the hens will be greatly appreciated.

I looooooove Cornish Game Hens!!!! You can stuff them with all sorts of things. I've stuffed mine with sauteyed (in butter of course) onions and celery and some lump crap meat that was seasoned with curry and salt. I rub some oil on the outside of the bird and then rub it with salt, paprika, curry, and pepper. I cook it for about 1 hour at 350 degrees. It's fantastic!
I eat a whole hen because they are pretty small.

Tastes like chicken, and you can cook them like chicken (not as long of course).

I like to stuff mine with a mix of sausage, celery and onions. Then I wrap a bacon strip round their chest and roast them. The bacon supposedly keeps their white meat moist--dunno, but it gives them a nice flavor.

I do not stuff mine. I just cover them with butter and salt and roast until done. Mummmm!

my favorite recipe is to cut them in half .wash them well pat dry ....deep fry them until crispy and put piri piri sauce on them ...I don't think they taste like chicken I think they are better !!!

              Piri Piri sauce
4 habanero or other chile pepper cleaned and seeded (wear gloves )
              juice of two fresh lemons
              4 cloves garlic
              handful of parsley
              1/3 cup olive oil
              1tsp kosher salt
toss in the blender blend until smooth ..wait a min before taking the top off!!!

this is awesome hot sauce btw...you can use any fresh hot chile for this I just love habenero for it however

Wow! Thanks for all the great info!!!

So, the hens are more expensive than regular chicken....I'm trying to justify the cost. Are they more tender and tastier than chicken, but with a chicken taste?? I'm also thinking of convenience, too....don't have to carve up a game hen....each is a cute serving. I'm not so interested in cute though.....I'm for the taste!

Thanks for the recipes!!! If I don't use it on game hens, I'll try it on chicken!!!!

I served cornish hens to my husband once, it was worth it just to see the look on his face... needless to say he wasn't impressed LOL. Apparently size does matter

Sometimes I can find them on sale. When I do, I stock up.

Really funny story about size and Cornish hens....my boss had a dinner party in which she served Cornish game hens. The hens were smallish, so she served one whole hen per person. She said that some of her guests couldn't eat more than half of their servings, because it was 'too much', even though she's watched those same people scarf down dozens of chicken wings and drumsticks.

How interesting!!! Is it more difficult to eat??? I wouldn't think so, but then, I've never eaten one. Your idea about buying them on sale is a great idea. Thanks!

Bio-I think a lot of people have a mental issue with it. You know ...they are eating a whole bird for dinner! Even though there isn't that much "meat" on the bird.
