  • Porridge Oats

I have introduced a daily portion of porridge into my diet without any ill effects. (I am three years into Atkins, and I would counsel caution for those less established.) Half a cup of oats a day made with two tablespoons of cream and salt added to the water. I have it with two tablespoons of thick 10% fat Yoghurt (Greek/Turkish Yoghurt). When Blueberries are back in season I will add them.

I am wondering about what other cereal I might enjoy. I don't like rice. Bulgar Wheat? And there are other ethnic dishes - suggestions?

(I haven't had bread or potatoes in three years and intend to keep it that way.)

Porridge is lovely, isn't it! And with lashings of cream....yummmm! I'm trying to think of other "friendly" cereals now, too. Coming up a blank though. Why is cous-cous spinning round in my head? That's made from semolina, I think... so would probably be a no-no...
      What about bulgour? What's that...?
Sorry... I'm just "thinking aloud" here...

          Re: Porridge Oats

I can't eat wheat---due to allergies---but I can tolerate oats and barley. When I was reached the Grains Rung of OWL, I figured I could make a 5 net carb oatmeal/porridge using 'steel-cut' oats and water, but I had to follow the directions in UK cookbooks, rather than US cookbooks.

In the US, oatmeal is very thick: the proportion of oats to water is 1 part oats to 1 1/2 to 2 parts water. In the UK cookbooks I consulted, the proportion is 1 part oats to 3 or 4 parts water---making a creamier textured porridge (very good too, imo).

              Re: Porridge Oats

That's the way they do it here too, but they usually don't add milk. Sugar is added at the table (that or maple syrup, raisins, or some other sweetener.)

The UK cooksbooks I looked at were Delia Smith, Catherine Brown, and Gary Rhodes (at least I think it was Gary Rhodes..it was either him or Nick Nairn). But I tried it their way, and it was good.

                Re: Porridge Oats

I love my steel cut oats! They say that oats keep you quite full as well as your body digests them very slowly, i find they keep my satisfied for at least a couple of hours. i usually find that 1/4 cup dry cooks to easily enough.

Brian, have you tried oatbran? I like it as well..though it has a more Cream of Wheat kind of texture. I find it's good mixed in with my porridge or with some wheat bran. Wheat bran is very low carb, but very dry to eat on it's own.

                  Re: Porridge Oats

I found this oat/flax hot cereal with added natural cranberries...I think it's made by a company called Sturm's. It's delicious, and causes no cravings. I make it with heavy cream and water. There's no added sugar, and 9g fiber per serving I believe. I don't eat it very often, maybe once a week, usually before I go on a long run.
