oooh where did you purchase your plants? I've seen them online but haven't noticed them in stores. It is my sweetener of choice and if I could grow it and figure out how to work it. I've been reading up on it. That would be AWESOME!

For the herbs, consider getting an Aero Garden. It's a hydroponic setup with grow lights and timer, and takes very little space on a counter. It comes with a free herb seed kit and you can get a bunch of other herb combinations also.

I get them at home depot actually, they're with the herbs....keep in mind I'm in Canada, but normally if we get it you guys should too. It's very cool...the leaves are soooo sweet . I take them and boil them down and use it as a liquid sweetener. the only problem is the liquid does turn very green, so it will change the colour of your food. but it's alot cheaper than buying it!

1 plant easily does me for months..it's so easy to grow. You could probably grow it inside in a pot too i would think.

            Re: 2008 Low Carb GARDEN!!!!

            Okay my turn, need ideas/information

Is there anything I can plant in a container and keep it indoors? I usually plant veggies outside but the last two years I have struggled with so many bugs and such in my area that it just is not worth it to me to plant them again at this time. I was atleast going to buy some herbs and put them by the window, any other ideas?
Anyone else have success with that indoor Aerogarden? Looked a bit small and pricey. Wondering if it is really worth the money spent. Thanks in advance!

I have 2 of them and think they are great. It may look small, but you have 7 plants, and if they are herbs, that's quite a variety! It's very easy to use and if you have any questions/problems, the customer support is excellent.

                  Hi Atkid,
Depends on the size of container and type of plant. I put yellow squash in one gallon containers last year and they produced great! Same goes for cucumbers.

Thanks Sherri, but did you do one or more containers of the same veggie. Like how many gallon containers did you plant in order to get enough produce for your liking.
If I were to take a pack of cucumber seeds would you put them all in one container or spread out into 2 or 3 containers.

I really was thinking you had to use bigger containers like 10 gallon, surprised you can work out of a milk jug size.

                      Re: 2008 Low Carb GARDEN!!!!

Just planted a cherry tomato plant with cilantro around the perimeter of the pot. Also have a pot with a cayenne pepper with basil and rosemary in same pot. Did this last year and everything had plenty of room. In the ground I planted cantelope, squash, and more tomatoes . . . even though here in Georgia they're predicting 31 for Sunday night! Guess I'll be covering some plants . . . just couldn't wait to get something planted.

                          Hi Atkid,
I plant my seeds in little individual size containers (pint size) then after their started with a good root system, I transplant them either in the ground or in bigger pots.
Squash and cucumbers are great producers as long as you keep feeding them. They really do better in the ground but produce non the less in containers. The bigger the pot, the more room they have to produce.
The ones I had in pots were left overs that I couldn't fit in my garden. I had squash coming out of my ears last year.

Lettuces, spinach, and many herbs grow beautifully in containers. So do tomatoes. Even if you only have a sunny window sill, you can still grow something like chives or basil in small pot.

This is very true. Prior to becoming disabled, I used to have a greenhouse and a huge garden, plus fruit trees and berries. Six years ago I had to bite the bullet and move into a small apartment in the city. I started just having tomatoes in 5-gallon buckets, but have branched out to grow tomatoes, cucumbers, snow peas, garlic, spring onions and sweet and hot peppers in big pots. I am about to harvest strawberries from those hanging bags.

I am growing in window boxes Swiss chard, spinach, radishes, endive and about a dozen kinds of herbs. I have two boxes of salad greens (mesclun), which I fresh-cut every day for my salads. I have 3 kinds basil, 2 kinds parsley, oregano, marjoram, tarragon, thyme, sage, sorrel, dill, chives and cilantro. I started all of these herbs and salad greens from seed early in the house, so I have been eating off it for a while. The window boxes are light enough to bring in the house when it is going to frost. I also have dozens of squirrels that consider all of this a salad bar, so I had to fashion chicken wire covers for everything. Robins love to pick off the tender sprouts on snow peas, so I have those in a cage as well.

I also filled a small plastic wash tub with red and white spring onions, white icicle radishes, Easter egg radishes, spinach and endive.

In addition, I grow from seed several family member's tomatoes and peppers. I have grown over 60 plants in this small space under fluorescent lights and carry them in and out to be in the sun when the weather cooperates. It's at that point where I need to move out or be overtaken by plants for the next couple of weeks when these veggie plants go in the ground. I am also planting some tomatoes, peppers, squash and cucumbers in a brother's garden.

I am buying a pineapple sage plant at a greenhouse, but have looked high and low for purple sage (Salvia purpurascens) seeds or plants. If anyone runs across this herb, let me know where.

I've placed an order for pineapple sage a couple of weeks ago (great minds think alike! )

anyhow about those little pots for starting seeds.....I read a great tip. Save the cardboard roll from toilet paper and paper towels. Flatten the rolls and cut them into 1 1/2 to 2 inch lengths. Then cut vertical slits at one end. Fold the tabs to make a bottom for the little pot. Fill them with soil, and plant away!

I have used toilet paper and paper towel rolls that way. Just becareful not to over water them, as they mold faster than peat pots.
