  • canned sardine recipes..post them!

You know these suckers are pretty darn good for you...there are two camps...sardine lovers and sardine haters! I happen to love them...it is strange to think this is one of my favorite things I used to share with my dad!!!..he would take a container of sour cream dice some onions into it salt and fresh cracked pepper then dump a can of tiny sardines in olive oil drained...into it and we would eat it on bread with fresh tomatoes....my dad rarely cooked so this became an elaborate drama when he made it for us!...a very coveted recipe to pass I pass to you..and ...well i....t is really good ...so try instead of the bread try it on sliced jicama or celery or a bell pepper slice ...or just dump it on a salad!.....

my second favorite recipe for canned sardines is

    Cambodian Sardine spread
a can of sardines in olive oil
1 package splenda (or leave it out)
    one tablespoon fish sauce
    1/2 tablespoon lime juice
    1/2 tbl natural peanut butter
1 minced jalepeno (or other hot chile)

just toss it in the food processor or mash well with a fork and spread on baby eggplants sliced or jicama or any veggie you like! I have served this at parties and it disapeared!

what are your favorite canned sardine recipes?

I eat sardines...I just pop the tin and put them on a plate drop lemon juice on them and eat with a green salad.

Or I do a sardine tea sandwich: mash the sardines, add some chopped egg, lemon juice, pepper, some mayo.

Sardines are much better when grilled quickly from fresh, over a small but intensely hot fire made of rosemary twigs and pine needles.

If you can't have the gourmet version, take the canned sardines and use them as part of an antipasti plate with grilled peppers, olives, cheese, prosciutto, pickled cauliflower, etc.

Sardines are also nice with grilled tomatoes for breakfast, and very heart-healthy.

When I am being lazy I just eat them out of the can, or with low carb bran crackers.

I had sardines for the first time 2 summers ago in Spain. Sardines are really popular there (I was in Catalonia) and the best were plain grilled with salt. They also took bread rubbed it with garlic and tomato and topped with sardine fillets. Well, needless to say I am a big fan of sardines now, but they have never tasted as good as they did in Spain!!

I used to work with Filipinos so I got to taste alot of their homecooking. They had this one dish of sauteed cabbage or some other kind of green then the canned fish (mackeral in this case) was added and heated through.

They also had a dish of dried fish that was deep fried. Sounds odd, but it was really crunchy had a slight salty edge. You ate the whole fish because the drying and frying made it crisp like a potato chip. I understand it's eaten like bacon for breakfast or as snack food like chips.

I've never had sardines and most people around here are of the second camp. But, I am willing to try anything once. Can you describe how they taste?

I can only tell you the tiny ones in olive oil tast like salty fish in olive oil ..they are the mildest...I do not like canned mackrel because it is overpowering..but sardines are milder...now if you get the larger ones in sauces they are more fishy...look for bristling sardines two layers in oil and try them ..the worst thing..you tried them and don't like them...my rule is to try something three times three differing ways and then if I still do not like it ..it is off my list!
