  • Sugar-Free Nitrite-Free Bacon and Sausage

I've researched the heck out of this and I still can't get the answers I'm looking for. Maybe one of you veterans can help us all out on this...

I find it IMPOSSIBLE to find BOTH sugar-free and nitrite-free bacon. I live in the largest city in the mid-Atlantic and I still can't find it at Whole Foods. I can only find nitrite-free or sugar-free, but not both. It's so frustrating. I spent a half an hour looking through every single type of bacon that WF had, and I came up with nothing.

Would someone PLEASE give me the names of as many brands as you can think of for sugar-free AND nitrite-free bacon? (Please don't give me a brand that only offers one or the other-- I know almost all of them.) This question also stands for sausage.

On a better note, I did manage to find sugar-free, nitrite-free chorizo in the fresh meats section of WF. They make many of their own sausages. You will need to carefully read each package, but it's worth it. I fried a gigantic chorizo with one egg for breakfast today. It was so nice and spicy!

However, regarding WF homemade sausage, I'm confused as to how some of their varieties can have carbs when no sugar is listed. (I checked for things like honey, fillers, etc. and there were none.) Would someone give your thoughts on this?

    Thanks so much!

Re: Sugar-Free Nitrite-Free Bacon and Sausage

    Nodine's produces a sugar free-nitrite free bacon.

But Dr. Atkins put the nitrite free caution because nitrites are associated with cancers. So many low carber's ignore the nitrite caution because it doesn't affect weight loss.

There are sugar -free bacons on the market. Gwaltney is one brand that is available on the EAst Coast.

As for homemade sausages...unless you home-make them yourself, sausages contain "dextrose" or "corn syrup solids". Some sausages like chorizo contain spices like paprika (dried, ground peppers). So those spices/herbs add a carb count. So you have to read the ingredients carefully.

I don't care about the minuscule carb counts that paprika gives... Atkin's allows paprika, so I'm not concerned.

Have you ever actually ordered from the place you listed??? I couldn't find ingredient information ANYWHERE on the site, which makes me doubt the "no sugar" part of what you're saying. I put in an email to them, so I'll let everyone know what I come up with.

This is probably the most frustrating experience. I'm so dedicated to doing everything properly, but I feel my hands are tied behind my back. I don't even trust to go out an order a steak-- many restaurants inject or marinate their meats. I refuse to eat in the rest of my life.

Anyone with ACTUAL tips on where to find sugar-free nitrite-free items is welcome to post!!! Please don't post more of what we already know (i.e. Gwaltney is sugar-free).

Wow. I think I'll pass on posting any tips in this thread. Good luck to you and I hope you have a better day tomorrow.

You asked where the carbs might be coming from if there is no sugar listed, and that is why Megs mentioned spices. She answered your question.

There is no need to be rude. If you don't find the information that someone posted useful, then keep your fingers crossed and wait for the next reply. I bet there are members less knowledgeable than you who are interested to find out what you already know.

I'm sorry if you didn't find my post helpful to you. I didn't realize that your question required me to post an in-depth customer review and rating on the Nodine company.

Good luck in your quest to find sugar-free nitrate free bacon and truly low carb sausages.

Almost forgot, for anyone who's struggling with "plain" Atkin's... I've had great success getting over the hump with CAD. Google it-- you may find it very interesting.

Interesting? Yes. But I agree with Jimmy Moore on CAD.
