  • Making chili - no sugar added tomatos?

I checked out a recipe on here for making chili and it said to use "no sugar added" canned tomatoes/paste. I was unable to find any NSA canned tomatoes and all i found was tomatoes that had 5G carb and 3G sugar, though all the labels said it was just tomatoes in water.

Please help. Is the natural sugar in tomatoes ok for induction? I don't eat tomatoes anyway so I don't recall...

Does anyone have a chili recipe or advice?

    Thanks!

I would wait until I moved to OWL to try to incorporate chili into my diet.

If there is no sugar listed in the ingredients of those canned tomatoes, then you found what the recipe called for: NSA canned tomatoes.

As far as whether the chili is a good idea I would have to agree with Meltin unless either your header that says you are in induction is incorrect or you are making a beanless chili with only induction friendly recipes. If the latter is the case I think that's fine but realize the tomato alone (much less any other ingredients) is going to mean you will have to have very small portions indeed.

I buy the Hunt's brand 100% Natural... On the list of ingredients no sugar is added. Hunts also has a sugar-free spaghetti sauce though I prefer to make my own from crushed tomatoes.

The "sugar" is the naturally occurring carbohydrate (sugar) from the tomatoes.

No! You DO eat vegetables on Induction. Tomatoes are on the Acceptable Foods List.

No. Naturally occurring carbohydrates are acceptable ... to the extent that they are in allowed foods.

You've read the book, Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (2002), right?

yes i've read the book...i've just always steered away from tomatoes because i know they have a bunch of sugar in them...I generally stick with lettuce, peppers, jalapeno, onion, pickles and cucumbers in salad and cook mushrooms, broccoli, and water chestnuts...I guess i would just have to watch my chili portions, which would likely be difficult as my allowed serving would be one cup of tomatoes per day and chili is delicious lol...thanks for the feedback guys...maybe i'll make some this weekend

They all have "sugar" in them, too.

Re: Making chili - no sugar added tomatos?

I was craving chili, but trying to go low carb so I made this up tonight. I'm a newbie, but I think this would at least help the craving. I browned 1lb of ground beef then added one can of the hunts chili ready tomatoes and 1Tablespoon of chili powder and about 1/2 Tablespoon of onion salt. I put 1 cup of shredded cheese on top. According to the carb listings the entire dish contained 11 carbs. It was a nice change, but it is a very "different" kind of chili. Even my non-atkins hubby thought it was tasty. My carb count for the day was very low only 8 grams, so when I ate half I was still well under my 20grams and it was nice, warm and filling!

Please anyone correct me if that was a bad induction meal.

The goal isn't to be "well under" 20 net carbs!

You are right. Sorry I am still getting used to everything. My breakfast and lunch were very light because I'm fighting a nasty cold. I am feeling a bit better so tonight I "splurged" on my funky chili with what I believe to be induction friendly ingredients.
