    Thanks

:wave I keep reading these posts over and over again...wanting to be a success story like all of you...

I want to try Atkins again, but phase 1 was so hard on me before! And very discouraging for me because try as I might, I did not see the scale change...Plus, I had several episodes of just plain out of control shivering that scared me big time...I am told that it was probably very low blood sugar that triggered those episodes; and that was prpbably due to carb intake was too low. Maybe the diabetes was a factor in that I wasn't losing weight too. :confused

I know I sound like a broken record, and I am sorry to be such a nuisance...But I will keep reading your success stories and hopefully rid myself of the fears I have about Atkins plan (especially fear of animal fats).

Go read the diabetic newsletter of this week where they preach you need to eat fat to lose fat.....go to Duke University and key in Atkins and look at the key things they claim Atkins does:
      1. Lowers blood glucose
      2. Lowers blood pressure
      3. Lower blood lipids.
I did it as I knew it worked for others but it took me about 8 months to get my head around it was ok to have some butter and some salad drsg, like olive oil and vinegar on salad, as for yrs I had been brain washed to eat low fat.
When shaky what are your bg readings, Are you testing properly and when????.Did you track your readings??? Demonstrate them here and what you eat and maybe we can guide you a tad.
      see post below for newsletter

when you started your Atkins idd you track your blood sugar readings so your treatment team could lower your med doses as witht he lower blood sugar intake you will need less of your meds and if you don't lower them you will have insulin shock or low blood sugar with symptoms like you discribed. If your treatment team is appalled at you eating all that fat you can just discuss low carbing with them and alert them of your new lower blood sugar readings.

Canuck was one out of control diabetic when she came to ADBB back in the summer of 2003 and it took herer a while to wrap her head as she says around Atkins and all that fat for blood sugar stability. Even took us a while to get her to join as she found our chatroom before she found the board. But she worked through her blood sugar fluctuations and got control of her diabetes. She is actually a success story in the new Atkins Diabetic book

        Happy low carbing.

When I had the shaking experience before, I had not been diagnosed with diabetes at that time...and I was just following Atkins phase 1 on my own. So had only the suggestions given from others on the board such as uping my carb allowance...Now I realize that maybe I was having a problem with BS and did not know it.

It has only been 4 weeks since doctor said I'm diabetic...so this is all new to me...as for a diabetic team, my doctor doesn't do very much...I went to one diabetes class to discuss diabetes and the need to test after waking in the morning, and again 2 hrs. after my meal...plus other times as needed if I am really feeling bad....

My problem? It's been 4 weeks total since being diagnosed--I still have not received a testing kit---no monitor, no strips, no lancets...I have been using meds only and experimenting with eating habits...Today I am told that my testing kit is on its way, to be delivered next week, and that the Oregon Health Plan only allows enough supplies for testing once a day...That is another blow to my emotions and fears--I feel like OHP is putting us in jeopardy. So now I need to know when would be the best time of day to test...I will talk to my "team" again. I feel like I am left hanging out to dry by myself... :help

Question? When doing Atkins woe, if you awaken during the night super hungry that will not pass, what is your choice of food to eat? If I eat protein such as egg or cheese or meat, then I will not go back to sleep. And quite frankly veggies at that time of morning are so unappealing. This happens to me often...If I were doing Atkins woe, what would I be able to choose? Hopefull by eating something before bed would stop this from happening, but it doesn't...I cannot eat foods with protein 2 hrs before I go to bed or I will not sleep. :confused

            Re: New To This Forum

Well, I am doing another experiment and will let you know by Tuesday when I weight myself for the week. My daughter which is also overweight and does not want to listen to me and my low-carb, is going to some hospital for the Optifast liquid diet. This weekend, since I don't want to cook so that she does not have the smell, I have been on Atkins shakes only and diet drinks. I just went for a little walk at the mall and my BS is down to 111 from over the 200 and 300 that it has been lately.

When she goes to work on Monday, I will have a normal LC breakfast and lunch during the week and then an Atkins shake for dinner since she will be here. Let's see if I can get my body losing again.

            Keep you all posted.

              Hi Jenny,

Just a word of caution. Although your readings are much lower than they were, even though the shakes and bars are labeled "Atkins", you have to be very careful with them. I know you're trying to help your daughter with her WOE, but you also have to help yourself.

My BS are doing a lot better. I lost 5 lbs. the first week, I don't weight myself until Tuesday (only once a week), so we'll see how am I doing. She is going on vacation tonight and will be gone a week, so I am back to my regular LC meals. Let's see how it goes.

                Thanks guys.

so helping her is helping you. now it will be interesting to see if you can stick while she is not there to hold you accountable. Have a great LC week.

                      Re: New To This Forum

OH, I know that I will do fine. Actually my problem is her. She was eating way to much and it was a constant need to go out to eat, and of course, I can not resist temptation like that. She was also drinking too much. Not one thing of what I tell her she hears, but if someone else says the same thing, then, my God, she hears them. I had lost 70 lbs before on LC and was doing great until I lost my job and had to move in with her. Now she is doing this Optifast and going to the doctor each week and at least they are teaching her how to cope with stress and maybe she will learn something that will keep her away from the food. I am weak when tempted with food, but if people leave me alone I do great. By the way the Atkins drinks look better thatn what she is drinking from Omnifast.

                      Thanks for your help.
