sal, how many "flights" can you do on your stepper in 20 minutes?

AND I'M CHEERING YOU ONWARD AND UPWARD TO THE SUMMIT OF EVEREST!!!!
are you going to plant the flag of Italy of the flag of Britain? i think i have both
Jimmie, doing arm movements as well is great. Lots of energy used that way, for sure. I know that when I do both lower body and upper body exercises together, in my workout, I get puffed far sooner.

How many flights in 20 mins? Ummm.... offhand, I'm not sure. I do mine in dribs and drabs on the step, throughout the day and count the "other" steps too. I did do 20 mins of stepping for that "one day 20 min challenge", but can't for the life of me remember how many flights I did. Maybe around 60/70? But that's rather a wild guess. Next time I do some steps, I'll count how many in how long, and get an estimate. Will let ya know!

Oooolala! A flag... How exciting! I think I'd better choose the Italian flag, as we might have other British flags up there some day. The more nationalities the better, don't ya think?

Forth Rail Bridge done! Starting on BT Tower. I'm definately getting a step this weekend so I can get in more flights each day. I'm really starting to see it in my thighs . Between the flights and the crunches, I'm finding out that I actually have some muscles and bones underneath the padding. I haven't seen them in about 10 years and had forgotten they were there. Whadda ya know!

tracey! well done! i had to giggle over the "padding" remark. lol
i'll get your numbers recorded on the spreadsheet!
give you arms a work out too and move them while climbing. i do this when i am climbing the real stairs too but on the stool in the middle of the floor, i can really fling them around and work up a sweat. don't get close or you'll get whacked!

sal, my 20 minutes with the timer got me 75 yesterday so your estimate is pretty much right on.

Thanks, jimmie. Half the time on those flights I'm carrying my 26 pound son, so that's about as much arm work as I can stand right now! That's also why I'm not getting in as many flights a day as I'd like. Another reason for me to get a step soon!

Tracey that's awesome! Seems you've declared war on the "padding""!! Congrats on the Forth Rail!

Jimmie... yes... I checked and if my math is right, it's about what I said, if not slightly higher.
If I go flat out, I know I can get more flights in but, somehow, doing the steps that way feels like cheating. I mean, it feels like I'm not expending quite the same amount of energy I would for a "real" flight of stairs. Weird, considering a step up is a step up, however it's done!! I prefer to stick to my regular pace on the stepper, and hit it every so often for a few mins during the day. I always was a tortoise, rather than a hare.

i know what you mean, sal. i felt like it was "cheating" too but then i realized the effort i was putting into things. almost all of the flights done on the first go round was actually stairs. the last couple have been mostly on the stepper. i'll mix it up too.

i've finished the cn tower again which finishes the virtual buildings again. i think i'll do a search and go for the challengers choice next. i'll let ya know what i'll be climbing!

Didn't mean that the stepper makes me feel I'm cheating... without that, I'd never get done! Just meant that it feels like cheating when I go really fast on the stepper. Somehow the steps don't feel as "hard". Something to do with the swing you get into, I think.

Hope to be joining you on the next set soon!

i've been looking over some flights and i think i've decided on 2 climbs for my challengers choice. Ben Lawers, Scotland @ 3982 feet and Mount Vesuvius, Italy @ 4203. now to pick a third.

Hi, ladies. I got a step this morning and I'm already knocking out some flights on it (when the kids aren't playing on it.) I just wanted to add my 2 cents to the step/stair conversation. I measured my step and see that it's 1" shorter than the rise on my actual stairs, so I was afraid I would feel like the step was easier, too. And then I did a few flights and realized that I'm using twice as many leg movements than I do on the stairs since I'm putting both feet on the step and only one on each stair. Does that make sense? So then I wondered is that how you all are counting it (both feet on the step = 1 step)?

tracie, i understand what you are saying.

i was counting 1 foot = 1 step, that made sense to me since 1 step up on an actually staircase is one step. i think you came into this challenge after another conversation about how we use the step stool. i used to step up with one foot then up with the other then back down to the original positon, only counting the upward potion. since then i discovered that it takes more balance and work to .............follow me if you can....
i'm standing behind the step stool. i step up with the right foot then the left foot. then step off the stool with the right foot but to the side of it. then step down with the left. back up with the left then the right then to the back then repeat this action. what i am doing is going from back to side to back to side. i don't know if that makes sense or not. it makes me concentrate, keeps tabs on my balance and i actually think i use my abs more, although that may just be my imagination. oh and once again, i only count my upward motion.

Glad you're getting in an Italian volcano Jimmie!!!

TBW... congrats on the brand new step! I bet your kids get bored with it before you do! Lol.
I do mine various different ways... sometimes I step up and put both feet on the step, then go back down again and repeat; other times I step up then down forwards and then back up backwards (not sure that makes sense); sometimes I do side steps.

The fast step up, (which is the way I feel is somehow cheating to some extent... though it's still a step up, so why shouldn't it count....!?!?) is to step up on one leg without putting the other foot on the step.. then back down again... doing loads with one foot/leg, then changing foot/leg and doing loads with the other. Seems to me that this way one gets a bit of advantage from the body swing or impetus.

Wow - who knew a step could be so complicated ! I think my main obstacle is going to be alternating which foot I start with. I've noticed I always start with with my left foot, so I seem to be cheating my right leg a little bit. Question is can I actually think and climb at the same time? Another challenge!

that's one reason i started going from back to side to back because you are always chaning what foot leads. you could just simply lead with the left for 1 flight worth and then lead with the right for the next flight. switch that back and forth.
