Yep, get cracking Lyssie! If it makes you feel any better, I doubt I'll have a huge improvement like that for quite sometime. I thought I was going to puke yesterday. But it could be because I was staring at one of those Weight Watchers groupies reading a romance novel while she leisurely raised her core temperature on the elliptical machine. She didn't even break a sweat.
Oh my gosh - that is an amazing improvement - congrats! And how can someone read on the ellip? That's crazy.
Did anyone else notice my time running the whole 5k is slower than some people walking? Am I amazingly slow or what? How can this physically occur? I ran it for 41.42 at 7.3-7.4KPH. Is this an all time record in slow running? Should I contact the circus as a side-show attraction?

ummm... Baarb, I'm a stupid american... what does that translate to in MPH?!?!?! My first time for 5k (end of Nov) was 40:00 so I don't think it's that slow.
Yeah... It was a run/walk combo thing, I still think my lungs try to kill me for smoking for over 10 years basically every day I try to run... I had like, 48.2% (timewise) of it running, but I think my running was like, 5/5.5mph?! I dunno, I wrote down the times and percentages, but that's about it. I remember the walking portion was done at 3.5mph so I could breathe again...
So this should totally make you feel better about the time.
I hear you, but the thing is I did run the whole way (except one minute at the start). Is that not weird?! I run slower than people walk - that just seem pathetic! I must try to get faster!
Today I'm aiming to do 7.6kph for 2.5k to build me up

That's not weird, if I ran the same speed as you do, I could run longer, since I run faster, it's a shorter period of time... the way I was building, and I know Julie was, I dunno that she still is... is by running (faster) for like, .1 mile, walking for .1 mile, if that feels ok, move it up to running .2 miles, walking .1 mile... etc. so then your walking decreases as running increases... then if you're running at 6.0mph for the running portion, and walking at 4.0, you can drop the running to like, 5.5mph, keep the walking the same when you up the distance, and then wait until you can do the 6.0 for that distance before moving up again... Does that make sense?
Lyssie--that's what I did/have been doing. I started with .1/.1 intervals (walk/run), then moved to .1/.15 intervals, then got wild and crazy and did .05/.2, then .05/.25, and by that point, I just decided to run the whole mile straight.
I also vary the speed. If I'm going for endurance, I'll run slower for the majority of it. Yesterday I did about 1/2 mile at like, 5mph to warm up, then went up to 5.2, then 5.5, then 5.8, then 6, then 6.4 until the end. If I'm doing sprints (.1/.1 or .05/.15) I'll walk at 4mph, and run at 7mph.
Do you think I should incorporate walking even though I can run the whole thing - is it best for improving speed? I think I read that. But it seems a backwards step.
I think I'll do one long slow 5k a week to keep the distance and endurance, one fast 2.5k and possibly one walk/running combo (5k).
What do you think?

I would try the sprints thing. It'll challenge you to run at a faster speed for shorter amounts of time. If you want, your recovery interval doesn't HAVE to be walking...you could run at a slow jogging pace, 5mph or whatever.
Baarb, I typically run pretty slow too. I can do a really fast mile for ONE mile, but after that it's hard. I would do better if I PACED myself better. Don't start off so ambitious and get all worn out (you probably pace yourself, hence being able to run the whole way).

My gym had the audacity to randomly close early so I had to run in the ice and snow but I did it. outside running is sooo hard. I walk/ran and it went ok. But no idea what distance covered. Will be trying 5k again on the treadmill next week.
