    Re: New Psychotic Challenge

Ok. Anyway, so I guess I'll start and then yell at people in their journals. You know who you are. Don't think you don't.

I'm gonna go with 36:45 as my time last week... which I killed yesterday (while simultaneously giving myself a heart attack) with 36:01.

    Shoulders - military press
    Biceps - preacher curl
    Triceps - skull crushers
    Chest - flat bench press
    Back - lateral pull-down
Quads - extensions I guess (that's kinda boring though)
Hamstrings - curls (another boring one)
    Calves - seated raise

I guess I'll go through this week and post the starting weights since I always forget to write stuff down....

      Re: New Psychotic Challenge

OK, I kinda freaked out when I saw the "running portion", b/c I currently do NOT run. LOL But then I saw that we could walk the 5K and that's fine by me. Whew! I do have a start time for that.

Weight lifting is not a problem. Bring it on!

        Re: New Psychotic Challenge

OK, well so far here's my info:

        5K personal best=35:03

        Maximum weight for 12 reps:
        incline bench=30
        pullover=30
        lying rear shoulder raise=10
        hammer curl=15
        leg press=176? (I do 18 reps though, not 12)
        dead lift=30
        calf raises=80

Honestly, I'm not expecting to see a *huge* improvement in my weights portion--I only do this about once a week because we do a LOT of toning/weights work in Boot Camp and Kickboxing...

ummm.. I love you Jules, but one exercise per body part... that way someone who does 100 exercises doesn't gain faster than someone who only does 20... :P

But uhmmm.. I'm thinking I don't want to cross you in a dark alley anytime soon.

            Re: New Psychotic Challenge

OK, so I have to choose one exercise per muscle NOW and track them for the whole challenge? Or do I keep changing my choices based on what's improving?

*edited to say* Um, I might just pick a couple for this challenge, rather than one from every muscle group.

OK, Lyssie, I chose only a *few* exercises to improve upon for this challenge. Is that better?

                Hey Lyssie,

This looks like a great challenge, but I'm not sure if my gym has the right equipment. I'll have a look see for tonight and see what my starting weights are.

Can I just ask - how often will be check in per week?

                  Re: New Psychotic Challenge

When I get home tonight I'll download my ipod and get my times from my runs last week for starting reference. I'll also look up how much I've been lifting. I'm just going totrack Upper body for my weight lifting (chest, shoulders, biceps, triceps and abs) portion. That's where I need the most improvement. I've got puny arm strength.

Baarb, you don't need any fancy kind of equipment. Free weights will do just fine. ****, cans of corn will do--start with 16 ounce, move up to the big boys from Sam's Club. OR gallon milk jugs filled with sand. See, you can make improvement using just about anything.

Heh, we can find a reason to trump anybody's excuse

                    Thanks Julie.

Baarb - exactly what Joy said. The check-in would be when any of the following conditions occur, a. your time improves b. your weight increases, or c. you haven't done either for a week and we want to know you're still alive.

                      Thanks Joy and Lyssie

The gym has weight and two generic looking machimes, but I never use the machines.

I am very rusty at weights, I only ever do curls, side raises, tricpe extensions and NO LEGS! So I need to figure out what works what and what my maximums are! I'll get back you.

Baarb, check out www.shapefit.com for exercises. They've got pictures of a whole bunch of exercises. I go there and plan out my weight training before I go do it. It's all free weight exercises too.

Hey... that site's nifty. Do you guys want to narrow it down to 5 exercises per person and just do it that way? That might be easier for everyone...

That's cool with me. Hmmmm I could do:

                            Military press (Shoulders)
                            Dumbell Flyes (Chest)
                            Bicep Curls (Biceps)
                            Overhead Tricep Extensions (Triceps)
                            Weighted Killer Ups (Abs)

And, of course, my 5K stuff

I really need to work on upper body so here's what I've got...
                              1. Shoulders- Front Deltoid Dumbbell Raise
                              2. Biceps- Alternating Dumbbell Curls
                              3. Triceps- Dumbbell Extensions
                              4. Chest- Dumbbell Press
                              5. Back- Dumbbell Stiff Leg Deadlifts

Mid March I should be able to do 5K, I'll post how that goes and if my time improves in the last few weeks of this challenge.

                                Hello,

Thanks for the tip Joy. The body for life site was quite useful too.

well here are my 5 to work on, I've just done them.

Biceps - dumbell curls did 8.8lbs per hand (am converting from kgs, hence weird numbers)
Triceps - overhead raises with one weight of 33lbs
Chest - dumbell press 11lbs in each hand
Quads - extensions on machine level 3 (the gym guy told me they don't know what this is equivalent to!)
Hams - Squats 33lbs in each hand

                                Hope that all makes sense.

I hadn't done a 5k in nearly two years so I set out to find my starting point tonight. I thought I'd have to walk half of it, but I ran the whole way - I am SOOOOO pleased as I haven't run at all for ages. Just goes to show what you can do when you put your mind to it Anyways, my time was 41.42, which needs work
