  • Week #1 Pedometer Challenge

Join us in the first weekly pedometer challenge!
We will go from Monday to Sunday. The first week will run from Monday, July 2 to Sunday, July 8.

Just pledge how many steps you plan to take this week and report back here throughout the week with your numbers. The daily recommended number of steps is 10,000, but it doesn't matter if you aren't there yet. You will be!

Here's some info about pedometers from http://www.pedometers.org/Pedometer_Benefits.html

"What's a pedometer? It's a simple electronic device you wear on your waistband that counts steps. Technically, a pedometer calculates distance, as opposed to a step counter, which only counts steps. The pedometer still counts steps, and uses a user-input stride length to calculate the distance. Other pedometers show calories burned, elapsed exercise time, steps per minute, and on and on. All you really need is something that accurately counts steps. Other features can be nice, but many are not necessary.

Why is it important to count steps? It's a primary indication of the activity you are engaged in during the day. Studies have shown that you don't need to dedicate a specific time to exercise, per se, but smaller bouts of activity can have the same effect as one longer, extended period.

That means that making small changes in your daily routine can have tremendous effects on your health. Park farther from the store, take the stairs instead of the elevator, pace while you're on the phone, walk with the dog instead of just letting her go, and go down the hall instead of sending an e-mail or picking up the phone.

By taking more steps-essentially increasing your daily activity and burning more calories-you are becoming more physically active. The American Medical Association says that by increasing your activity level, you will:

    Increase stamina
    Stimulate weight loss
    Lower blood cholesterol
    Lower blood pressure
    Improve self image
    Improve mood
    Enhance quality of life"

Ok, not sure AT ALL what my knee is capable of, particularly during recovery here. So this week will be more experimenting/baseline. One mile is 5280 feet. So I'll go for six days of that for 31,680 steps.

Cynthia, I just reread your first post and saw where you mentioned small changes. I am also taking the July Mileage Challenge and was wondering if I should take off the pedometer while working on my miles. Past experiences have shown me that the pedometer is unaffected by the stationary bike, but the steps are counted on the Gazelle.

I'm thinking, to be fair, I should take it off while on the Gazelle. What do you think?

In the fitness challenge that I did at the Y, the instructor told us to wear it while working out. She said it all counts. I'm all for wearing it while doing exercise

                    Re: Week #1 Pedometer Challenge

Oh! I'd love to join this Cyn! But I don't have a pedometer... and I have no idea what my usual numbers are.

Would it be ok to try and get one tomorrow morning (shops closed here today - Sun) and then, if I can find one in my little backwater, commit to what I figure I'll do for the rest of the week? Or... if you're running another challenge pretty soon after this one... I'd be better off joining that one from the start. Depends if you're running the challenges just now and again, or every week.

                    What think you?

Sally - You can join us tomorrow after you get a pedometer. But, if this challenge goes well I expect to keep doing them every week as long as there is interest
                      We'd love to have you!

Tks Cyn! I'll do my best to get hold of one... and if I can't, then I'll join the next round, when I do get one. I'm willing to bet you'll have loads of takers and be hosting lots of "weeks"!

Cyn, since I'm on doing the mileage challenge, would it be ok to count the # of steps I'm doing for that for this? I've finally figured out my pedometer. I had it set to kilometer's instead of miles. I was so frustrated with it. I knew I was walking further than it was recording....lol. Well, let me know if that's ok.

                            Hello Cynthia,

I work from home and haven't started exercising yet. Is it ok for me to join even though I don't get much walking in? I may be shocked into walking more if I see what I really do each day.

Count me in Cynthia, I usually walk two miles everyday. Got to go to wally world today and get me a new pedometer. I am going to shoot between 70,000 and 120,000.
One question, is the step count just for exercise only or does it count for the steps we take at work and throughout the day?
Thanks for the challenge, I am interested to see my step count every day.
