Re: Cool Running for the week of July 17, 2005

The only thing that got me out the door last night to run was reading your all's posts in here yesterday. So thanks! I think. It was brutally hot, and the head index put us up over 105 but it was "only" about 93 when I went for my run. I'd decided to stick with Week 4 of the C25K this week, mainly due to company in town and late nights/11 hour work days and that kind of thing. I think it was a good idea, because if I'd been doing Week 5 last night I wouldn't have made it. I think my body definitely needed to stay steady for an extra week, because I was getting slightly worn out with that exhausted/almost sick feeling. I am not a swampflower, I don't bloom in the sun. Give me a cool Fall day any day of the year!

I'm also getting my eating back on track today. For the past two days I've reached a little far in my OWL levels, and I think it's time for a few days at a slightly lower level of carbs to get things going again. I do, however, find that running really takes it out of me and I can't go UNDER 35 grams of carbs these days or I get worn out and actually stop losing. Weird!

Re: Cool Running for the week of July 17, 2005

Great job, reveal!!! Glad we could help motivate you (or was it guilt??) Well, whatever, it worked! Good for you!!

I just finished 4 miles at noon. Maybe could have gone 6, but after yesterday's push, I wasn't really up for it. That gives me 20.2 miles in the past 4 days. Tomorrow is a rest day before my 13-15 mile run on Saturday. At least that will be on a trail which means asphalt (softer than concrete) and lots of SHADE TREES! YAY! Off day Sunday to rest and recover, then resume another fun week of cool running on Monday!

      AIN'T IT GRAND??

First, Betty, love the pics showing how much your hard work pays off!!

Worked out with my trainer today and I'm pretty sure she's making up for us only working together 1 day a week now instead of three. I think she tried to kill me. I'll probably wake up tomorrow and need help getting out of bed!

I was so dead when we finished, I only managed 30 minutes on the elliptical and it wasn't anything amazing either - just my old moderate pace. But I did burn 366 calories on that, and according to Fitday, my training with her calories burned, which I know is just an estimate, was 449 calories for a total of 815 calories!

        I'm pooped! But it's a good pooped!

Re: Cool Running for the week of July 17, 2005

I did it! I just registered for the Ntelos 8K in November in Richmond, Va. How amazing! I can't believe I did it, but I couldn't find a 5K close during the time I'd be ready, and I've seen people run this race before and it always looked like a great course. So I jumped in and registered. Surely I can be ready in 3.5 months if I continue to train, right? At any case, if I have to walk a bit I will, and I'm sure I can finish, but I want it to be a really good experience.

Oooh, I'm so excited and nervous! I can't believe I'm doing this and loving it so much!

Re: Cool Running for the week of July 17, 2005

Hot race, fun race, slow race. I couldn't get my heart rate down, it was stuck in the high 170's, it actually hit 198 (is that bad?), so I was getting passed like crazy. BUT out of over 1900 runners I finished 913th with a time of 47:40. And the best part they were announcing random runners as they crossed, and I heard "now coming on with a strong finich numer 1158, James Roche of Hingham." That was really cool. And I was kicking hard too so it was worth it.

It was a simple out and back flat run, you should've seen the lead the winner had at the three mile mark, it was at least 200 yards. That kid was flying. Anyway, for next year I need to be under 40 minutes to place in the super heavyweight division. I guy I was lined up with at the start, 228 (barely over 225) and 26 years old won the division. I told him I'd get him next year.

                And I will.

I biked for 2 hours felt like 30 m inutes but, My but is soo sore I could scream. LOL Didn't run but I guess cross training is a good thing I had 2 of my kids in the carrier behind me so I was pulling an extra 70 pounds. Just think I used to lug that around all the time. What a realization I had today.

                  Better go

Anther 5.5 miles down. Weekly total 29.3. Tommorow I rest and on Sunday I tackle 8 miles.

Jim just a thought---If you keep up with your woe and your running plan.... in a year you won't be eligible for the heavy weight division. You will just have to kick butt in the overall race!!

Sarah, great job. 2 hours on a bike pulling two little guys. Wow.

Another amazing week everyone. Thanks again for keeping me going.

Tex, your weekly mileage is AWESOME!!! Girlie, you rock! Enjoy your rest day tomorrow .. you deserve it!

Today is my rest day and I'm fighting that 'I'm a slacker' mentality... Although my sights are set on tomorrow's 13-15 miler up the trail ... woohoo! Can't wait for that!! That will give me 33-35 miles this week. Few more weeks like that and I'll be in Texas ...

Quick update on the race. There were just under 1400 finishers so at 913th I didn't make the top half. But I think there were a lot of really good runners in this race (not to rationalize or anything.

But I just went to coolrunning to check out the super-heavyweights and I was 13th of 25 super-heavyweights (over 225). But I bet I was one of (if not the) heaviest runner out there.

Oh yeah, new low today, 282.5.

Thanks Betty . It wouldn't make a porche owner very proud, but I think 0-29.3 in 10 weeks is pretty good!!

Re: Cool Running for the week of July 17, 2005

Five miles at 5AM this morning. Very slow, but I'll explain why, this might get longer than I'd like.

I've a little disappointed in my lack of time improvements. They happen but not like I need them to. Logically I know that my biggest improvements would come at the beginning and they would slow, and logic also tells me that I'm still a very big guy. But screw logic, I want faster times. So running the race the other night I was watching the people pass me, paying very close attention to any big guys that did. The thing I noticed is that they take very long, slow, loping strides versus my short quick ones. I realized I'm not running, I'm fast jogging. And when I'm passing people near the finish, I'm running. Running for only the last half mile of a 5 mile race is not enough. So this morning I ran the whole five miles. I started very slow and concentrated on a nice open stride. I took lots and lots of concentration to keep that stride and not slip back into my old stride. I didn't pick up the pace until the third mile and by then it was becoming second nature and more comfortable. I had to refocus on the last mile to keep the stride but it worked. I felt it in my quads, hams, and glutes more than I ever have. Now I need to build the stamina with this stride and I think my times will improve again. Thoughts or comments are welcome.

One thought about my race time the other night. I was disappointed in how slow it was, but in retrospect, my very first race on June 12th was 4.9 miles at 48:05, so 5 miles at 47:40 is a 25 second improvement for a tenth of a mile longer distance. Maybe I'm rationalizing, maybe not.

OK, I'm done. See you on the road.
                                Jim
