  • Cool Running for the week of August 14, 2005

9.5 mile in 91 degrees and 71% humidity, no sun. I know I wanted 10, said I would do 10, I tried to do 10, but I am happy with 9.5. It is a whole half mile longer than I have run before. It was much warmer(I am not up to Bettys heat tolerance.) than I am used to and OMG hills!!! I am not going to get down on myself. My hubby followed in the car to make sure no one hit me as I was mostly on the highway, he really made me feel good about how well I did, instead of whay I didn't reach my goal. I took some GU--(ewwww) at 5 miles as well as 8oz of propel fitness water(yumm) I am going to skip the GU next time and double the water. Wow, ok, this got really long. I am happy and if I continue to add half a mile each week to my long runs I will reach 13.5 miles 4 weeks before the race. I think this is good. Thanks you guy so much for your help.

Have a safe, enjoyable running week!!

            Sarah, you *ARE* our superstar!!

I finished 4 miles at noon. Man, it was brutal. Oppressive, humid, blistering sun and NO WIND. I had planned to do 6 miles, but with the lack of shade and running on blacktop ... ugh. So I quit at 4 rather than throw up at 6.

Afterwards I went into the fitness center and did the machines. Upper arms, back, abs (105 crunches on the exercise ball) and glutes. Pretty much covered everything today. Its amazing to see how strong I have gotten .. being able to do lateral weights of 50 pounds (over half my body weight..) That truly astounds me. So for those of you who feel like you'll never make progress, trust me, persistence will get you there. Even at age (nearly) 50.

            Great job everyone!

Ok, Betty I have a HUGE question for you. Well as you know I have been doing long runs now for a few weeks well since I ahve started I have noticed on the day after I have Hypogycemia and also I am starving all day long. Is this normal is it ok that I eat more on the day after. I am just wondering I thought I would get low blood sugar after my run not 1 day later. I had to eat 2 handfuls of almonds to get rid of it and it also makes me feel sluggish and somewhat sick I don't like that.

Is my metabolism still reving a day later?? I dunno just trying to make sence of this.

Is there anything I can do have you noticed soemthing similar to this??

I hope you can answer this question cause you are the Queen of running.

5 miles this moring. My alarm clock did not go off and I started 40min late ! I want to do 2-3miles tonight after hubbie gets home.

Sarah, (AKA Running Diva II)-- I have experienced the same type of thing hunger wise. On the day of my "long" run I am not hungry at all, I have to force myself to eat something, then the next day I want everthing I can see.

So whats up with that Betty (AKA Running Diva I)?

everyone. Cajun, Effie, Reveal, where are you???

Re: Cool Running for the week of August 14, 2005

Sorry gang, I've been thrown a curve. I was forced to quit my job yesterday (long story) and I'm still reeling emotionally from that. I am chomping at the bit to run today and I hope when DD wakes up, I can convince her to run the trail with me.

As to your question, Sarah, its very common to not feel hungry after a long run (I experience that myself), but the next day, it hits. On your recovery days, your body craves protein to repair the muscles used and overused during your long runs. FEED IT! Do not allow yourself to go without the foods you need for a full recovery.

On my long run days, I try to replace the electrolytes and minerals that I sweat out. If I don't feel particularly hungry, then I don't eat much that day. The next day, however, I try to eat alot of protein and fat, which usually isn't a problem since I LOVE BEEF! The main thing is, when you're hungry, EAT. Its okay!!

I always feel embarassed to add anything to your awesome posts.
Saturday - 2.3 miles around a new trail (pond) that is not far from where we live. Hubby and I did it in 27 minutes.
Sunday - walked (can you say practically ran) the dogs around same pond
Monday - walked 30 minutes because my leg and ankle were hurting
Today - ran 30 minutes. Started run with achilles hurting; 20 minutes - calf started hurting/cramping; 25 minutes added the knee. Don't know when the knee stopped, but we stopped at 30 minutes. Calf still cramping, as I sit here at my desk

If you are having problems with you calves and heal and suc I would take a look at your runners. Are they new, do you use them for everything walking included. Do you wear them all day. If that is the case you may want to replace the shoes and see if that helps. A lot of injuries can be prevented with new shoes. And then just use those shoes for your workouts don't walk the mall with them don't do anything but your workouts in them. I have a pair just to use on my runs.

I think it's absoulutely great look at you running 30 minutes That is excellent. I used to only run that long really not too long ago it's nothing to scoff at THAT IS EXELLENT and you should be PROUD of what you have accomplished.
