Re: Cool Running for the week of December 25, 2005

Here's the suggestion from CoolRunning forum - take an ice or cool water bath for 10 to 15 minutes if you haven't. It forces the water out of the legs and then allows it back in gradually. The people with big bases swear by the method. (I wouldn't know yet.

Ice baths have been a must for me since long runs hit 10+ miles--quicker recovery...

I ran my 6.5 Christmas Eve a.m., but then took off the rest of the week until Fri b/c of foot injury...yuck! Nothing was broken--just sesemoiditis--my podiatrist wrapped my foot yesterday for today's 9 mi run. Felt MUCH better! Today's run was OK, except I had like 4 hours of sleep last night, so I was tired--overslept, so I didn't feel all that prepared, and a little underdressed at first, b/c it was 35 deg when we started, and it was supposed to be somewhere around 45--brrr...My main running partner didn't show, so our other running buddy and I took off and kept a little bit quicker pace from the previous few weeks..9 mi in 1:37:30--I was trying to conserve my feet a little bit, and the last 4 mi were a killer b/c my bladder was screaming...hahahaha...We have a 20 mi race coming next Sun., so I'm a little nervous. We are all participating in it instead of having our 30K benchmark Sat....

Sarah--most beginning marathon programs do not have you running the marathon distance before the race--most build up to 3-4 runs of 18+ miles (with step-back weeks in between), with at least one run of 21-24 mi before the marathon, followed by a 3-4 week taper. I think you will be more than ready--be careful not to overtrain--you do not want to get an overuse injury. I am participating in a local USAFit program; others have referenced Hal Higdon...check 'em out...
