Awww Denise... sounds like a bit of a struggle! It's hard to move into someone else's house and 'life', especially when that is radically different to your own. And frustrating when you can see so clearly what others could do to dramatically improve their health. As you say... you can't convert everyone, and people do have to be willing to be converted anyway. If you left a copy of DANDR along with the Splenda, would anyone read it?

So sorry to hear about your MIL. Very frustrating and upsetting... for all.

Here's to lots more seven hour nights...or more!

My dog walk went to pot this morning...had to rush back half way through to avoid getting drenched by a huge storm that suddenly happened. Made breakfast dancing around and kinda 'walking/trotting on the spot' to compensate... and boy did I feel silly!!!!

I'm home right on time I little sun burned and very tired but it was fun.

MSNICKSMOM I'll bet you can find a way for her to communicate with y'all. Use sign boards alphabet boards or even speech practice. My neighbor is aphasic and he has worked very very hard to talk some words. he worked on them with his grand kids until he could say all theri names. the feed back he got from the smiles on their faces was all the motivation he needed. Maybe you can spend some time with her working on words she needs to say to let you know what she needs with with the aplhabet board or writting them. I know when he can't get his meaning across he gets so frustrated cause he is inside there trying very hard. I bet she is too.

      • Re: The Goalie's Challenge Exercise Thread

Thank you 2big. I am wiped and heading to bed but wanted to comment while her experience was still fresh in my head. We have flashcard type signs. Sometimes she's right on. If you ask her what she feels like for lunch, she'll dig til she finds the soup can card or the hot dish card. But some days, when you ask her the exact same question, she'll dig until she finds the puppy card or the pillow card. Or some other totally inappropriate response. But she thinks she's answering you. And if you pullout the 5 or 6 choices that would be "correct" answers, she will shake her head at you and insist it's the one she's already picked? So somethings not lining up right from both sides. It's not just the lack of talking, it's the lack of language connection totally sometimes. Sometimes it's crystal clear. Last night she was, after a minute of missing the point, able to communicate to DH and I w/o any cards that she was in the middle of a show and wanted to stay up longer than usual to watch it. So sometimes it's OK. But here frustration is absolutely palpable when it's not.

But, we made it. Truly the worst part for me was sorrow for her, which is just counter porductive. And the digusting house. To have my kids in that environment, and I am NOT a neat freak by ANY stretch, was just SO stressful for me. It makes me feel bad, because my SIL obviously has better things and more important things to do than keep house. But UGH. Is really all I can say. But we made it it was good that she had the time to focus on her kids before school starts again, and that Gma got to see mine at this super fun toddling stage. Benji was SO cute making faces and flirting with her!

Thanks for the support too Sally, I really appreciate it.

Oh, yeah, exercise? Lifting Benji over the piles of crap, transferring mom, playing at the park with Nicky and one 10 minute jog

This weekend aside, I have NOT been able to get back on track w/a cardio routine. I love the resistance training, but I know cardio is super important for health (esp with my genetic dispositions of heart conditions) and also for fat burning. Any thoughts???

        Hugs to all
        Denise

Glad you survived. Cardio, how about getting Mousercise or elmo exercise tape and spend the time doing cardio with the kids? or get out the trike/bike and stroller and take a cardio power walk with them?your older one would love to be in charge and holler faster mommy faster LOL
As the folk at Patricia Neal rehab ceter explained it to me when someone aphasic generates the "speech" it is easier for them to tell you cause when you ask and they reply it has to go from ear to brain interpetation of the sounds you made to thinking part of brain to speech control center out to mouth and vocal cords for reply or in your case to arm movements and eyes. and just like you and MIL I get some strange answers from him which he insisted were correct. They said when that happened i should repeat back to him what I thought his reply to the question was and then he tells us another way if we are "stupid" and don't understand his answer.
Did your little ones enjoy their time with Grandmother? I bet she enjoyed them even if it was just watching them play.

2 big thank you SO much. On both counts. I can try both those exercise ideas, Benji esp LOVES to dance, he might think he's super cool. And I'd given up on outside exercise as it's been SO stinking hot, but it's going to let up real soon here I'm sure.

And your points on MIL make so much sense. I don't get a LOT of time with her, so I'm sure her primary care giver sees her communication patterns better and part of why she was frustrated was just that it was me, not SIL. MIL DID enjoy the kids, oh my goodness, she just lit up when Benji told her "hi". And she laughed at their brotherly antics, stealing toys, wrecking pictures, that kind of thing. I'd comment that Benji was so SASSY, and MIL would get a twinkle, and look over at DH. It was very special, and it was clear she was in there, y'know? And Nicky did super trying to engage her too, that part went really good and I'm so glad we were able to do that for them and for her.

Thank you for bringing that back to my attention and leaving me with such a positive spin. You really have a way.

Morning Ladies, sorry to hear you're having such a hard time Denise. Hope things get better for you.

I was very good with the exercise last week. Still not back at the gym yet..too much going on don't want to buy a new membership yet. But i ran my 2.5/3 miles 4 days last week. And did my 20 minutes of pilates 3 days.

Going to run again today..may take the dog down to the beach. It's not as long/steady a run..i run 10 mins on the boardwalk to the dog beach. play at the water with him for a while..then run 10 mins back..but it's such a beautiful day here it would be a shame not to take advantage of living so close to the water.

you are so welcome. Our miscommunications have lead to some very good fun times for both of us that we laughed about afterwards when I'd remind him I didn't speak nor cook country. "killed" lettuce and fried bolonga were just two of our food adventures in communication.

If the heat ever breaks I'm going to make use of the 12K trail behind mother's house for some back to nature power walks. right now it is full speed ahead on the treadmill.

Yup, you guys guessed it. I'm so stinking healthy these days I'm over it already, but the baby got worse and today Big Bro and dad woke up with it. Sigh. The baby esp, it's so SAD. Hopefully it's short lived.

So, does dnacing around the kitchen and pushing a grocery cart count as exercise???

I did get a work walk in yesterday, and my lunge/squat/pop routine.

And, I had a large restaurant margarita last night and was still down this a.m. Yay. Usually any alcohol makes me retain water. It's still worth it And it made 11 pm grocery shopping MUCH nicer

yep you bet it counts get one of those cheap store pedometeres and see how many steps you log shopping. doing a lap of all theaisles before I shop got me over a mile when I was inducting. now with Mother I can't do it though.
                                Glad you are better.

So Sally how is the climbing going. Can you run faster now that you are smaller?

Sadie isn't that water awful cold to play in or do you just get feet wet not whole body wet?

Jimmie jo how are you doing now?

I did my HIIT today. I'm thinking about building me an exercise room in the basement but then the doc said at the anual testing Mother has about 18 months left so maybe I'll just enjoy the gym and wait till I get my own house back. I hope he knows what he is talking about. he says it just goes all at once when they are like her healthy. The bad aprt is since she has such a short time she should and will be endulged so if she wants cake or pie or icecream she gets it. Man is that tough on my carbohydrate addiction cause not onlyu do I have to walk the carbohydrate tiger on my chosen path and lock him up every day with me unharmed by his overpowering force, but now I got to walk her suductive tiger too.
