    Re: Another half marathon PB

The half I ran in last weekend had "no mp3's" in the brochure we were all sent as they were concerned about all of the "elite athletes" lapping the many slower and not so slow runners and that we may not here them coming. The elites really are amazing,

Yeah my DHs brother is one of those. Runs like a 2 hr full marathon. I have never seen him run but apparently a big deal. My DH says its his life.

Do you know exactly what pace he runs full marathons in? It cant be 2 hours. As I think world record pace is somewhere around 2:15

Okay, I never met the guy which is kind of why I'm not sure. DH and I are more isolated from his family. DH thinks the world of him though, but I really don't know him so don't really ask much about him. From what I read online its like 2:35 or right around there usually. I didn't know exact before just meant a range. Seriously, before I started running on my own I tuned DH out when he talked about it. LOL. Still tune him out but for different reasons entirely. LOL

2:35 is fantastic pace. He must be winning the odd race running at that speed. I am in awe!

Well, how many seconds can it cost to pass a "deaf" and slow runner who is wearing mp3... lol

And by the way, no one shouldn't blow its ears of, nobody wants to get a tinitus ;-)) What do they think we're doing?

Running without music is just boooooring. You can do it once in a while enjoying nature, but how much fun is it 2 or 3 times a week? Plus, it helps me holding my heartrate down. If I am not listening somehow I am more tense and tend to have a much higher rate. That's true, believe it or not.

Does anyone use those heartrate watches. I have seen them at the store and considered buying one but unsure if its worth putting out the money. I have always been terrible at the whole, "okay now take your heartrate" thing. I'm usually huffing and puffing and thinking was that a beat....? So I wonder if the investment would be worth it.

richt: yeah my DH thinks he's fantastic. Apparently he's a pretty great performer as far as running is concerned. In part that is why I don't talk too much about my running with DH. I feel a bit foolish with my measley old gal running (lol) when he's discussing the topic at such an intense level with someone so skilled.

Its a great investment. I bought my Polar M61 in 2004 and its been my running buddy ever since. Its extremely reliable and has never failed me, even through our intensely hot and humid summers here in west central FL .. I've logged over 240,000 calories burned and 675 running hours since I have had it. I WOULD NEVER BE WITHOUT IT.

Mine has the chest strap which is very comfy.

                        Worth EVERY PENNY! Buy one!

I used to have a polar F11 which was great, I recently upgraded to a Garmin 305 as it has a gps system to it and can tell me the actual distance of my run, my average speed, my heart rate and lots of other interesting and useful details.

                        Expensive, but worth it.

Okay, doing the price matching now to get a feel for what I'm hitting DH up for today. LOL. I don't know if I can put this site on here but I used to use this when I walked to get an idea of where I was going...I found it very helpful for tracking. However, I now want something more on my direct person. If there are any walkers out there this would come in handy, I have used my car to track the miles it gives and found it very accurate.

                              My question for the day...LOL

I run in the neighborhood, on the treadmill, up the street....however, I have never run in anything organized. Anyway, there is a 5K coming up here. I am thinking about participating just to get my feet wet. They also have a 10k but as I said before I've been all over the place on running consistency and feel its a bit too much of an entrance for me. So where is the problem you ask....

I may have mentioned it but I have never been an exerciser, at least not until the past few years (and only running since this year). In fact, I used to be embarrassed to exercise. Silly to feel like a dork doing something good for your body...wonder why that same humilation didn't strike me at the refrigerator. Anyway, I have used this awkward "not athletic person" attitude to push me in working out publicly. I have run on days out on the street and thought boy I would like to stop but seriously thought "what if someone sees me just walking like I gave up" It's not a vanity thing just a "she's the chubby one, not the athletic one" persona I've had all my life still jumping into my head.
So, those same demons have me feeling embarrassed about doing a 5K. Something inside says do it, you really want to but then comes the wave of doubt. I could run it no doubt there but inside I think.....will I look stupid, will everyone be like what's this fat chick doing here, even that people will laugh if I breath heavy.....one odd excuse after the other. I'm even emabarrassed by the thought of telling DH I'd like to run it and he's been nothing but supportive in my workouts. I'm contemplating just going out for the few hours and not saying where I'm going then telling him after but still have to face the actual public display of the runners. Eeek. I know it sounds nuts huh. Did anyone else have these fears when they first thought they'd try it?

Brats, no one will mock you! You are actively doing something to lose the weight. The people who are likely to be mocked more are those people who do nothing but sit in front of the TV all the time. Its the same with going to the gym, no one should be nasty or take the micky out of you because you are actually doing somehting to better yourself.

Dont worry what others think, just crack on, you will be great.

I look forward to reading about your race experience.
