OK here's what the Doc said. He thinks my old shoes were to blame. Ok I that I can handle. He said to not to walk until it feels better and then to build up slowly after I get new shoes. So I can do that I guess. I am thinking it might be time to haul out the bike and go explore some of the trails around here. I think I should be ok biking. Just trying to figure out how many miles I would have to go to get a good workout. Anyone have any ideas? I did get my HRM today and so far it seems pretty cool although Polar's user manuals leave a bit to be desired. Right now I am trying to figue out how to set the alarms for target heartrate.

thanks for all the supportive and kind words.

Susan, that's great that its only a matter of getting new shoes. I was hoping for that answer! :nod

Glad you got the HRM ... I know you'll figure it out in no time. They can be a bit intimidating at first .. believe me, I felt the same way, but before long, you will wonder how you ever got along without it!

Oh cool..rollerblading...I'd love to do that!!!

I went for my morning run this nippy morning and was blessed to see a momma and poppa Canadian Goose family with their five little babies!! I run along the harbour and I see lots of birdlife, but this was a really special thing to see...awwwww..little yellow/grey/brown fluffy babies scuttling around...so cute!

I'm leaving tomorrow morning for a week long trip to my hometown and there's a wonderful 5k trail going along two rivers, so I'm hoping to do that a few times when I'm there. My sister has a dog that will need walking especially now since she had emergency surgery on her knee yesterday!!
All she did on sunday was stand up and her knee snapped and less than 24 hours later she's in an operating room, the poor thing! Something to do with cartilage shifting and sticking out.
So good timing that I'll be there with her during the first few days of healing.

          Have a great week everyone!

            I'm back!

Got back from Portugal a coupla days ago and finally managed to get out for a run yesterday evening. Only 2 miles, but I managed to run the first mile without a stop so I'm pretty pleased with myself after a few weeks with no running... The house seems so empty with virtually all the furniture gone - no elliptical, no bike, not even a video machine for a home-workout. I made sure to still have a pair of running shoes though :yes Just a few more weeks and be out in Portugal for good with hundreds of new trails to explore...

So no walking for me but I did 40 minutes of yoga. Was definitely sweating after that. I wish I were stronger to do that poses but I guess with lots of practice I will get there.
Haqve a wonderful trip moochie. It's always nice to see family and freinds you haven't seen in a while.
Good job to everyone else for all the hard work you are putting in.

I let my shin rest last night and ran this morning instead. 2.6 miles in 26:21 I took 59 seconds off my best time so far. I've cut a whole 1:22 off my time in just 4 runs this spring. And that's only since last Wednesday.

Yes I'm eating a smore in the picture, how do you think I got so fat?

Welcome back Esther! We missed you! :wave Great job, doing 2 miles after your sabbatical!

Moochie have a good trip .. hope you have some good 5k runs on that trail! How cool you got to see a Canadian goose and babies ... they are adorable! I love all the birds we have here; herons, egrets, cranes ... they never cease to amaze me.

Carole, enjoy your rest day! Did you get that HRM figured out?

Jim, that's an awesome 2.6 mile time! WTG!! You are knocking the socks off your previous times! WOOHOO, that's a major achievement!

I just finished 8 miles in 1:44 .. not too bad considering its really warming up out there. Not too bad of humidity yet, but can the sauna days be too far off? Can't complain this year .. its been staying cool longer than is typical and we'll definitely take it while it lasts. I burned 711 calories today and felt strong, despite not eating much today. I was well-hydrated though .. downed 24 oz of water before I started out. Its amazing how much better you do when you're well hydrated!!

                    Great job everyone!

taking it slow. I did the 1 mile WATP tape and 30 minutes of yoga. I can't believe it but I have gained back 6 pounds. I do not know what is going on because I have been religious about my eating and drinking my water. :yikes Arghhh. :yikes I am hoping it's just some stupid female thing and that one of these days I will wake up and it'll be gone. Anyway Iam going to try to bring the exercise back in and see if that helps. HRM monitor is working but the WATP just didn't keep me in target range for very long. I am not going to push because I want to be back to my 4 mile actual walks soon. I only have 5 weeks left before the 10k!

I had the stragest urge last night to go running again. Anyone ever run twice in one day? I wasn't sure if it was a good idea, but I really don't see why not.

I ran 2.6 miles this morning in 25:32, so that's another 49 seconds off my time, for a total of 2:11 seconds of improvement in just over a week. I know this rate of improvement can't last, pretty soon I'll be fighting for a couple of seconds. I started the run with a little more open stride and didn't push too hard and still had enough juice for the home kick (which in my case is only a couple hundred yards, because I have a small hill right before I get home. Someday soon I'll start my kick at the bottom of that hill and see.

Tomorrow I think I may rest, maybe not, but Saturday morning is my 5 mile morning. I'm curious how much time I'll take off that, 5 minutes maybe? I can only hope.

                          Jim,

You really do need to incorporate rest days into your running ... to give your muscle tears a chance to heal. Think of your rest days as your RECHARGING days and you will discover that the day after a rest day, your performance will be stronger and better than ever.

I understand your enthusiasm, trust me ... if I had my way, I'd be running to work each day (13 miles one way) ... but ya gotta protect yourself against potential injury due to overtraining ... so REST IS NOT OPTIONAL ... Its very hard for me to limit myself to just 4 running days a week, but as your miles increase so does your need for those rest days!

                          Great job, though!!

                          :joy :joy

                            Thurs 4/21:

10k (6.2 miles) speed run today. I ran a 35:05 split and finished in 139. Overall a good run on a warm afternoon with resistance wind on the back half. My previous fastest 10k run was in an actual race where I finished in 1:14:02. So I'm happy! Sweatin' like a pig and red as a beet, but HAPPY!
I ran the first half pretty much as fast as I could (having to stop at intersections for traffic, etc), which was an 11 minute mile pace. Not bad for an old lady! On the way back, I varied my speeds, incorporated some 'fartleks' and then cut it back every so often. Fartleks are a great way to increase your overall speed. I was doing them during my training runs last summer and they really made a difference. Try doing a few next time you're out there!

No run tomorrow ... rest day .. then Saturday, hopefully a 10 miler!

                            Happy Trails everyone!

Well my body is still recooping so I did interval training fast slow fast... I did my 2 miles in 27.20 which is pretty kick *** for me about 48 seconds off my usual 14 minute mile. LOL slow but staedy I am pretty happy I used to run 10 minute miles but, right now I will live with what I have I am still losing. I am very happy I was able to do it and run again. I had to Jam my workout into this morning weights then 2 miles. I was hoping for a longer jog but, I won't push it my body was already tired from doing weights so I think this is why I was fatigued for my run.

I better be on my way happy running everyone.
