Re: For those ladies over 50

Thanks Elizellen. Let me know when they contact you. We can share our experiences with each other. Today...my SIL sent me some pictures of her in her hat and their stuffed bears with red hats that they use for mascots. Really cute!

Talk about serendipity. I hardly ever watch morning Tv shows much after the first hour, but today I flicked it back on just in time for a story about . . . . The Red Hat Society! I couldn't beleive it. And I was quick enough to record it to the HD so I can have a leisurely look later. Link here for Oz members http://seven.com.au/sunrise/more

Wow, Its a small world. I'm so excited about joining that I could burst. The women I met yesterday are all very nice and sounds like they have a lot of fun. Just what I need after the time I've had the past year. I'm really looking forward to it. Are you going to join Odille?

Becky, As none of the dozy lot on the Gold Coast (just north of us, and there are THREE RHs there!) got back to me, I've set up my own! We are officail chapter #69763, The Tweed Valley Red Hatters!

I'm sending out a press release today and I'll keep you posted. I hope you have a good time with yours too.

Do you know, I went through my wardrobe and I have LOTS of purple clothes, it's always been one of my favourite colours anyway. And I bought a red hat at the op shop last week after your post for 50c and have put a red and purple floral scarf on it, it looks very nice. And while I was in Tasmania looking after Mum after her fall, I bought a lovely pair of red shoes. It was meant to be.

Oh, I am so excited for you. I love the name you chose. I sure hope the group here contacts me soon or I will have to go searching for them. Course I joined the Senior Circle and several of the gals there are also red hatters. Lets do keep in touch and share photos of our groups and experieces. That will be fun. I think Elizellen is joining a group also in England. We're gonna have a blast.

I have my own "ya-ya girls" and we've been friends since junior high school ! It is absolutely remarkable to me that we could be as close as we are for as long as we have been. We've seen each other through marriages, divorce, marriages, illness and injury, sad times, happy times, death, family issues, aging parent issues, we cry and we laugh. And we all agree, we don't know what we would do without each other. I talk to at least one of them every day and the only difference now is that we also communicate through cell phones, blackberrys and e-mail !! I'm a lucky girl. Everyone should find a solid group of female friends.

You are very fortunate Irish. I have two friends that I've never lost contact with from school. One I have known since 1st grade.

The only problem is that they are still on the East Coast and I now live on the West coast. We call each other occassionally and send Christmas cards, but haven't seen each other in years. The last time I saw them was when I went home for my mother's funeral 12 years ago.

When I do talk to them, it makes me feel years younger with the laughter and deep conversations.

Re: For those ladies over 50

I heard back from a Queen Mum. Yay! They are dog lovers (as are my mom and I) and they are not too far from where we live. It's a fairly new group and they are having their first meeting in a couple of weeks. I'm a bit nervous as I am mainly doing this to get my mom to go, because she wants to go but she's shy to go on her own. My nervousness is because I have my growing family still and our weekends at the cottage. I'm hoping that it will work out that I can go to most outings. I just like to be able to commit to things, you know? And most of the ladies probably have kids out of the house and stuff. Eh....I'm probably fretting for nothing. So now I have to go find a pink hat somewhere. Maybe I can find a cool one for cheap at the flea market next week.

Oh I hope you have a wonderful time at the meeting. I'm sure that you'll be able to participate in some of the activities....and once you take your mom a few times and she gets to know the others, she probably won't mind going to some things without you.

I went to a Senior Circle meeting last night. Some of the women are also RED HATTERS. They assured me that they would let me know when the next meeting is and I can go and get signed up. They said they hadn't seen or heard from their Queen, so she might be out of town. I'm excited.

I still havent heard from the RHS about how to contact the Bournemouth chapter (the link on their website leads nowhere!) but I did find a phone number in a 2004 article in our local paper (good old google) for a differently named chapter from the one mentioned and have left a message on her phone.
Hopefully I will soon hear from them.

If you haven't heard from them by the time I get into my RHS, I'll ask my Queen if there is a way she can contact yours. I think it will be a lot of fun to share our stories about our groups.

I've had a good response to my media stories (appeared in 2 local community papers). Planning a morning tea get together for next Thursday - will keep you posted.

Haven't received my stuff from the Red Hat HQ yet, I'm hoping it comes before then.

Oh Odille, I'm so happy for you! Please let me know how it goes. I hope you hear from the RHS soon. I'm supposed to get an invite this month to their meeting so I can join. If I get in, and you haven't heard anything, let me know and I'll see if my group can contact yours. It sounds like so much fun!!

When I Am An Old Woman

                                I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in ships and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick the flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit. You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and a pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.
But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We will have friends to dinner and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old and start to wear purple.
