    Re: Had a meltdown

Sunny, that's strange that you gained a little bit of weight when you're being so good on the diet and it can be discouraging but hang in there because it will change. I had that happen to me 2 weeks ago when I had the flu. The first day, I only ate 500 calories and just 800 the next day but I gained half a pound! I couldn't believe it!

About the Splenda, they say that the body can't tell the difference between sugar and sweetners and that's why they cause cravings. I try to keep from using too many too but I think I usually use 4 or 5 a day. They don't seem to bother me though.

QS, I'm glad you're here too! Have you tried drinking decafe coffee? That's what I do. Actually, and I don't know what people will say about this but I posted it on the board when I first joined and no one objected, but I drink a cup of International Coffee's sugar free, naturally decaffienated French Vanilla Cafe every morning and it doesn't affect me at all. I drank it the whole time I was losing my weight except on the hottest days of summer. It's warm and creamy and I love it!

Sunny, you mentioned that Desertthorn was thinking of a forum for us and needed a name and I was thinking of something about self-sabotage because I think that's what my problem is when I start getting close to losing 40 lbs. What do you think would be a good name?

      Re: Had a meltdown

Thank you Blueberrylady for the welcome! I am so glad you are doing so well on your WOE!

I did Protein Power 8 years ago and lost some weight and many, many inches. Now that I am menopausal and a new diabetic, (plus have severe edema) I am discovering the weight is just going to take some time coming off of me this time.

It gets me really frustrated at times. The scales are my biggest enemy. I really should put them in the closet, but, like you, Blue, I have this perverse desire to go and weigh myself every morning.... ha ha ha!

I have been pretty good about not eating sugar and all the other little "white" no no's.

I have just decided last week to up my carbs since talking to my dietitian and to add some other things to my WOE, hoping that would surprise my metabolism....lol! I added berries a couple times of week and just recently discovered the Dreamfields pasta from Netrition.com. OMG it's wonderful! Made mac n cheese with it and it was mm mmm good!

I lost the weight I put on when I quit smoking and I have 50 more pounds to go and I am living the low carb way....I just don't want to let go yet of the caffeine in the morning. LMAO!

I am trying. I did buy some Dunkin Decaf and that is great tasting decaf coffee. My thoughts were to mix it in with my regular. I did that the first morning and walked around like a zombie all day. LMAO! I know, I know...excuses, excuses!

I am trying... I do not exercise. There! My problem... see, I know what it is! Ha Ha! Oh and getting down 64 ozs. of fluid when I have a fluid retention problem is hard to do. It's like trying to stuff more water into a bucket that is already brimming over the sides.

I am drinking more now than I ever did though. I also, bought an Elliptical Trainer to get me exercising, too! It is laying in the floor in a zillion pieces...hubby will get it put together Sunday, I hope!

I haven't quit trying! I am still determined! Just hang in there with me and I will be here to support you guys too. We are all in this together.

I am so proud of everyone in this group! (((((BIG HUGS))))))

        Re: Had a meltdown

Blueberrylady, the only reason I can come up with for sticking at this weight for so long is that several years ago I bounced between 155 and 158 for a long time. So maybe my body is remembering the old set point and trying to hang onto it.

I do know that it will pass. And all the support I've gotten here has given me the motivation to keep going until I get past this!

It sounds like you are using a sensible amount of Splenda. I imagine I will be able to do that, too, without problems, but am sticking to 3 until I get used to things not tasting so sweet.

Desertthorn is thinking of several names.... all good. Since she is a moderator, I'm leaving that decision in her hands. I wouldn't be surprised to see her come up with something humorous though!

QS, I also SHOULD leave the scales in the closet. I actually joined the Scale Free challenge and left them alone for several days. But it almost killed me. So now I weigh and stress over the results, but I seem to be getting better about taking it in stride.

I HATE exercise. Phys Ed was my most dreaded subject in Jr. High and High School. The only thing I enjoy doing are walking and swimming... and there's nowhere to swim around here and the weather has been too cold to walk.

So I've been riding the stationery bike. I can't say I enjoy it, but I have a little desk set up at my bike with the TV remote and crossword puzzles, so it's not so bad. I am always glad when it is over though!

Today was the first day that I felt an urge like I WANTED to get on the bike, so maybe I am finally making it an integral part of my day.

I am just thrilled with our budding mini-group! So glad both of you are here!!!

          Good evening Sunny
It is clear to me that it is a highly possibility that you have a low thyroid due to your body temp alone. I wish you would go get it checked out hon. I was reading this post from you in another thread,#2
Why are you ignoring the advice of getting your thyroid checked? If it's your thyroid, (which I believe it is)there is treatment to get those levels up. Making an easier weightloss a reality. Rather than considering a fat fast. I just don't get it.
          Aww well, I tried.
I wish you much success in your Atkins Journey hon.
Wishing you the best of health and lite.

            Re: Had a meltdown

Sherri, I know I need to have my thyroid checked. I know it is a problem.

I just really have a hangup about taking meds if I don't absolutely have to have them. I want so desperately to make this work without them.

However, if I haven't broken this stall with a significant weight loss by the end of March, I will budget in a doctor visit and tests and just do it.

I think it's a case of denial... and having read so many posts about people going to the doctor with thyroid complaints and having them brushed off, I'm a bit intimidated about it, too.

I didn't disregard your advice. I took it very seriously. I am just TRYING to make it work... and hoping a miracle happens and my metabolism kicks into high gear... and I live happily ever after.

              Re: Had a meltdown

Sunny, I can sympathize with you, I hate doctors, and I hate taking pills for any reason.

I've had very slow weight loss, but loss all the same. My metabolism is so slow, and I've found much to my disgust, that I have to exercise hard for it to kick into gear.

Hope you don't mind another suggestion. Have you tried increasing your exercise on your stationery bike? Try doing just a bit longer each day, or every other day, for just one week, and see if it helps. I have to force myself to exercise, but I always feel better after, and it does wonders to kick in a sluggish metabolism.

              Best of luck.

                Re: Had a meltdown

Mikki, thanks so much for posting!!!

I know that exercise can increase your metabolism, and I am seriously working on it. I was so out of shape for so many years that when I first started riding the bike, the best I could do was a little over two miles.

Then I started doing the two miles twice a day, then worked up to 6, 7, and now 8 miles a day at one time. Plus I have increased the tension on my bike one notch so I have to work a little harder so I will build muscle.

I've also added a very light upper body workout. At first, I could only do 10 reps. Now I am up to 70. I'm resting a couple of days because I am sore, but my intention is to keep on adding reps until I feel like I'm in good shape. I will also add a little weight as I go along.

I am not discounting the idea of meds. It's definitely an option.

But if I can gain muscle and exercise in the morning and evening, it's got to to have some beneficial effect on my metabolism. I am thinking maybe riding my bike in the morning, then walking later in the day would be a nice combination.

And I am also praying about it.

So we will see how it goes!

It also occurred to me that I probably have put on a little muscle weight, too.

My calves are 3/4" bigger than they were due to riding the bike.

                  Re: Had a meltdown

Sherri, There are other reasons besides thyroid problems that cause a low body temp. I went to the dr. 2 weeks ago with a fever and my temp was 97.8. But that's because I have a genetic blood disorder called Thalassemia. Most people's bodies regulate their temp but mine doesn't so I constantly put sweaters on and take them off because I have to regulate it manually. Even in the summer! I just thought you might be interested in that.

I hate to exercise too but I like my elliptical better than any other machine I've used. But to get in the mood I have to put on a ragtime CD because there is just something about that music that makes me want to get up and dance!

I did really well on my diet yesterday but this morning I'm up half a pound. Go figure.

And now for a bit of news. I was very surprised last night to get a PM from Jimmie asking me if I would like to be a Spotlight Hostess along with Chicklady! And of course, I said, 'Yes". She will be talking to Tom over the weekend to have him put the new title under my username when he can get around to it! I am really tickled about it!

Sunny, I'm so glad to hear you are 'happy and perky' today!

Have you looked up thyroid problems on the web, maybe WebMD would have a lot about it. I find that sometimes I think someone might have something or other but when I look it up, there is a symptom that doesn't fit at all. I would check it out before I went to a Dr. because, as you said, sometimes they just brush you off and it would be a waste of time and money.

                      How's everyone else doing today?

Blueberry, I've read everything I can from reliable sources on thyroid function, including what Dr. Atkins wrote.

It definitely fits. The only thing I am not sure of is to what degree it's affecting me.

Like I said, I will go have an endocrinologist (sp?) check me out if my efforts this month don't pan out. But I'm giving it everything I've got on my own first!
