  • Old Navy Plus RANT

I was so excited when ON started carrying plus sizes. I'd never ordered from their website, though, because I wasn't sure what size I would wear. I wanted to wait and try something on in the store. Only certain stores carry the plus and the one in Nashville is a total pain to get to, but I FINALLY made it over there.

    Waste.of.time.

I tried on several pair of pants and they were the worst fitting things I've ever encountered. Evidently, Old Navy thinks that only incredibly tall people are fat. I am 5'5'. I put on "mid calf capris" and they came to my ankles. I put on khakis and I could have made footed sleepers with the left over material that was flapping around my feet. It was unreal. Not to mention that everything was low rise and totally weird-fitting, there, too. I was wearing a 24 and the "waist" was at least 4 inches too big, but there is no way I could have gotten anything smaller in the hips. The length, as I mentioned was atrocious, but the thighs were baggy. Unreal. And they claim to use real people and be true fit?

Thankfully I had better luck at Target where they had some plain old cotton convertable cargos/capris on sale for 9.99. The right length, no gigantic waist, normal fit. And then I found some dress pants at TJ MAxx for way less than I would have paid at Old Navy and much, much nicer.

Honey let me tellyou... I'm 5'2 and ALL capris come to my ankles! LOL It drives me crazy because I think Capris are so cute, but they just don't make them in plus short people sizes!

The best pair of capris I ever got were at Target also!

I have the opposite problem, I'm 5'9", and need a 33 inch inseam. Average pants are 31 inches, so I have to buy long, 34 inches, and have them hemmed. So, on average, I drop at least 50 bucks on a pair of slacks, and have to take them to the tailor to get hemmed, which is aother 10 bucks. The only place that carries tall pants that I can wear is Lane Bryant, and I personally think their quality sucks, and their clothing is overpriced, but I don't have other options, being so tall. (most plus sized pants only have a 30 inch inseam.) Capri pants hardly cover my knees. I never wear them because they look stupid on me. I live in sunny florida, and wear skirts and long pants year round. And what is the deal with short skirts at Lane Bryant? I wear a size 20, and I'm sorry, but no one wants to see my fat legs, including me. Gross! OK, I'll stop now. Actually, one more question. Why is it impossible to find scoop or v neck tops (plain colors) preferably in cotton with 3/4 length sleeves. I'm real booby and hippy and I that's what is most flattering to my figure, and it's nearly impossible to find. I can't wear a neckline that is up to my chin, and I don't like patterns, because I think they emphasize all of my "problem areas". Am I asking too much??? And I hate when plus sized tops look like maternity clothes. I'm fat, not pregnant!

        Testify!

And who says fat girls want to wear horizontal stripes? Hello?

Or bright flowered or llame? Are we beacons of fat or something?

I can never find clothes from ON. I once tried on a pair of pants (size 20 I think). They were long enough but they had a 4 inch zipper. Nobody who wears a size 20 needs to wear anything with the words "low-rise" on the label!

Edited to add that you may be able to pull off the low-rise pants if you are short wasted. I'm pretty normal and a little long if anything and I can't imagine them on someone my size, yuck.

The people that design plus size clothes are a mysterious bunch. I never could understand why they thought I looked good in a print with flowers on it the size of basketballs with the sleeves covering my hands and the shirttail hanging to my knees and the pantslegs covering my feet. Maybe they thought the less of me that showed the better???? I'm 5'3" and plus size clothes never fit me. Obviously in the world of designers all the people are extra tall with long arms and legs and love hideous huge print fabric.

I hear you, I'm 5'11" Regular pants hit me mid calf! LOL I have always ordered my jeans from JC Penny. St. John's Bay Jeans come in tall and X tall. Talls fit me perfectly, but sometimes I get the xtra tall so they are baggy. I like the way they fit, they come over my hips. You will have to order these online or from their catalog, because it is almost impossible to find 22 tall (for me). I've also found that Walmart carries Just my size stretch jeans that come in tall. I love them, and they fit well.

I agree!. What's with all the horizontal stips! In my town the only place a I can shop is Penningtons and this year they are full of horizontal strips :yikes Fortunately they have lots of nice long tee's in solid colors so I stoked up on those.

You tall people should all head to Old Navy, then. There are tons of pants just WAITING for you. :yes Of course, they have the ridiculous low rise....WHO is that attractive on in a size 24 or 22? WHO??? WHO??

And ZTA, honey, if I was a 14, I'd love Old Navy, too. *sigh*. Someday.

                      I'm with you ZTA!

I really like Old Navy pants. It's because I'm tall and sick of wearing flats all the time! In fact, I'm wearing a pair today. I can get pants that are actually long enough when I'm wearing my high heeled boots! They have some that don't actually go all the way to your waist but aren't the ultra low rise either. I was really shocked to find out how comfortable they are too. Lane Bryant is the only other place that I've found pants that are long enough. I REALLY am looking forward to the day when I can shop in the normal sizes - surely there will be a lot more selection then!

Everything at Old Navy doesn't work for me though. This "perfect fit" thing they have going with their sweaters and turtlenecks has got to go!!! The words form fitting and sweater just don't work out well for this gal! I couldn't find any blouses there that weren't cut to show EVERY bump and bulge. I've got to hide some of this baggage!! :yikes

I had the same problem whenever I'd try on capris. Then, one day I was watching WHAT NOT TO WEAR on television and they said if you are under 5'5", you shouldn't wear them. So, since I am 5'3"...I don't even think about it anymore.

omg i just choked on my lunch - so funny and so true.

I'm 5'7 and have been blessed to be able to wear smaller sizes than my weight would normally allow. I do believe, however, that the whole "Vanity sizing" thing is out of control. I've read several different places on the web that we are about 25lbs heavier than our mother and size wise 2 sizes larger- but that doesn't discount the sad fact that a 16 10 years ago won't even go over my hips..(I've tried it) but will spare the story to go along with those 10 year old pants. <snicker>

So I'm left to seek out places I wouldn't normally shop to fulfill the need to look "cute" and "fiesty" in my clothes, size 16 or not. **** even when I was larger (22) I'd try to find the cutest thing I could.. which is hard, let me tell you. I love TORRID..there's a website too, but we have a store in our mall and they have the absolutely most stylish, coolest clothes if you're a pluschick! www.torrid.com
Anywho I shop at Goody's also. They have a big selection of "Jr plus" which is the cute stuff...not the grandma stuff (grandma's of the site, world, planet forgive me!) with big patters and hideous stipes and strange color combo's that leave you wondering.. (WTF?) They also have a website. But from what I've noticed a lot of their jr clothes are fitted differently (even same brand) with the "womens" section plus clothing.. OH and they do have a big variety of PLUS PETITE. (And even some tall also)

So as I sit finishing up my lunch and listening to Prince sing his heart out on retro80's lunch I'm reminded of days when plus sizes were so hard to find and when you did you wished you hadn't anyways.. "You've come a long way baby"..

Actually, low-rise pants work on me. I'm short waisted, and regular pants end wayyyy up on my stomach. Low-rise ones fit on me perfectly. Funny, but true.

I looooove Target pants and capris...they've always fit well, and don't cost a fortune. I've been buying all my clothes at Saver's these days though...they're cheaper, since the clothes don't stay around for long!!
