Sharni, I forgot to add that you should avoid the currywurst, since you are Muslim and not all currywursts are made from beef. Plus, when you usually by the wursts here and are searching for beef, you will want to avoid most of the wursts sold in German markets and imbiss stands. Although it says "beef (rind)" there is usually pork fat and flavorings in it to give it more of a "taste". If you want wurst, your best bet is to find a Turkish store for any cold cuts and wursts.

I used to hang out at a bar called the Brahaus in a town called Langenselbold. Does anyone know that town ot better yet the place known as the Brauhaus there?

Hi Chynna, I am not Muslim so I definately can indulge in pork products! I actually came back last night. I did not have the curry wurst because there was so much more out there. I went to the Weinachtenmark (spelling) and there were tons of food there. I had a great time in Berlin. :icondance

          Germany newcomer

I have been in Stuttgart since January. I am adjusting but so is my belt. I am up just about 20lbs since being here. As an emotional eater, and not wanting to come here, I have struggled. However, I think I am ready again to see my goal of 167lbs. I have 103lbs to go to get there, but I am ready for the scale to move in the opposite direction. I intend to start induction on Monday because my husband is away on a business trip. I won't have to cook for him and my kids love whatever I fix. I will have a week without him and hopefully that will be enough time for me to dig in and get myself motivated to stick to it.

The downer of being here is that I don't have any time to myself. I went to the gym daily back in the states and had lost nearly 70lbs. I had about 80 more to reach goal. I was excited and confident that I would make it. NOw I have no gym (at least none that will care for my children while I am working out like Shapes did) and I have no babysitter for the times when I just want to be alone. I am overwhelmed with a job that doesn't ever end. Food becomes my solace.

What ever encouragement you can provide is more than welcome. I live on the German economy, but I do have access to the millitary grocer.

            Hello/Hallo

Well I am a German atkineer living in America. I've actually lived here for the last 11 years. But I do truly miss my homeland! I've read all your posts and it has just made me homesick.... :sadblinky
I so miss all the great stuff germany has to offer and all the great food. I moved to America when I was 15 so its all still stuck in my head, my Deutch has suffered a great deal but I will always call Germany my Mutterland!
Anyway, congrats on your wanting to change and better yourself. We can do this!!!

              Guten Tag

We're visiting Germany for the third time for our annual family holiday (I just love your country). This time we are staying self-catering however, and at the moment I'm on Induction, but should be into OWL by August. Because my German language skills are, sadly, pathetic, I'm a bit worried about what i am/am not going to be eating - if I look on the back of packets and stuff.
I just love the salads and cold meats - am I better off sticking with what I'm eating on Induction now or making a move towards the unknown?

                Re: GERMANY!!

Hi Squeaker! My advice to you while visiting Germany is to look for the word "Zucker" (as well as Zuckerstoffe) on packets when buying meats and packed salads. Actually, I would also advise you to stay away from the packed wurst salads, and the sort, since they usually have fillers and too many carbs.

I would suggest you stick to the foods you know. You can't go wrong sticking to whole foods! Also, in case you decide to have a döner here, make sure you stay away from the ground up kind, they are packed with fillers! Stick to the kind that are made with real slabs of meat.

                Enjoy your trip!

You can make it a sweet treat with some lc fruits or a salty one with green onions, salt, pepper and herbs (great on lc bread). You can bake with it, too - cheesecake, for instance ;-)

I am trying to think what else is "typical German"...

Ahhh this was reliving my child hood.....you can OCCASSIONALLY find "quark" at places like the big market in Seattle WA....but generally its not found in regular stores stateside...what a shame too...I SO miss "kasekuchen"....a real german baked cheese cake.....MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM yummy. shame on me for finding this sticky/thread and reading it.

Instead ask them for mayo or mustard or a little of both. Other known street foods are the Turkish Doner (make sure the meat is not the ground/minced kind since it contains fillers. Look for the meet that looks like actual filets were used to make the slab of meat), grilled chicken and "Schweinebauch" which is like bacon only alot thicker and grilled like a steak. Just avoid the Leberkaese (which is like a thick slice of backed bologna but usually contains fillers) and the Frikadellen (which looks like a hamburger patty, but is ground pork and beef with bread crumbs as a filler).

The breakfast here usually consists of brotchen (bread rolls), cold cuts, cheese, etc. Usually at a restaurant or hotel, you will get all of these plus butter, sometimes fresh fruits and veggies (if it is a buffet) and sometimes eggs are served from the skillet or boiled.

Dinner is usually between 6 to 8pm for most people here.

Make sure to visit the Brandenburger Tor! That is the area of the annual Love Parade!
No no no...not avoid the Frikadellen....those are the BEST!!!....Man the one we used to get from the butcher in the Kaiserslautern Farmer's Market early Saturday mornings..man those things rocked...but then again, his were made of horse....the brotchen kind of made it though....so ummm *sigh*...I guess that would have to be avoided...damn the injustice of it all.

Horse meat Frikadellen? Never heard of a butcher her in Germany selling it. Even if you were to avoid the broetchen, it would still be wise to skip the Frikadellen altogether. As I mentioned before, there is a huge load of bread crumbs in it to keep it soft and from shrinking, so you'd want to stay away from it.

Moving from Reading in Berkshire, England to Lübbecke, Westfalen, Germany next week.

I expect to see as similar range of goods to British Supermarkets but with a bigger and better range of cold meats and suasage (Wurst), which will be good.

I don't use any branded Atkins or low carb stuff, so the lack of it wont worry me.

You are American also? I am American but living in Belgium for 8 years(married to a Belgian). I love visiting Germany. British Military. I haven't seen Splenda in the NAAFI (British PX) either, but I haven't been to a big one.

I don't use much sweetener, and still have some stock from UK. I use more liquid Hermesetas than anything at the moment, and that is saccharin, which is Atkins legal.

I have seen quite a few German Sweeteners on the shelves, but haven't studied the labels yet.

When the time comes, if all else fails, I get get what I need mail order from UK using the Forces Post office.
