    Hi Remmahsr,

thanks for your praise *blush*. I do hope you will continue to lurk there :yes

    Hail2queen,

thats the problem we have currently in Germany - there are basically no ready lowcarb products. You can checkout the diabetics sections but a lot of these products are sweetened with fructose, so no help for us.

The good news are that Germany has about 1000 varieties of sausage, thats something you can enjoy!

Also, because there are no lc bread, pasta etc you can buy ready, there is a very creative german lowcarb society, coming up with all kinds of recipes. I would recommend to get a bread machine and create your own lc bread, its really easy and actually I think it tastes better than the stuff you can buy (and I know, I compared the two ;-))

    Take care,
    Franziska

      german induction

      hi everybody :yes
my name is patty and i live in cologne. started induction today (still got a couple o questions, but, hey, i'm a fast learner), and i have the same issues as many of you seem to have. things like, "where the **** do i get pork rinds?". juz kiddin. maybe "us germans" can support each other in all questions atkins, since i don't feel hot about confronting a german practicioner or the like with the "oh so unhealthy" atkins diet.
      blessings, patty :joy

        Hey Patty, :wave

It's nice to see another "german newbie". I too don't feel too great about talking to a doctor about this. Luckily for my Apotheker in my neighborhood speaks perfect english, so he helps me a lot on things like what vitamins I can get that are Atkins Friendly and ideas of where to look for certain foods. He helps me out a lot on the translation of medical terms too. A big help. Glad to see that we are both on the way to a better us. Take Care.

QUEEN- Are you stationed in Germany or are you a local citizen? If you are on post, the commissary should have tons of low carb products and foods to eat. That is where I get all my low carb foods. Let me know and I will help you out with what is good or not for atkins. Good luck to you!

New to Atkins and to the Forum

            Hi Everyone :wave

I am an American Expat living in Mannheim. I have been here for 10 years and I am fluent in German (although I do have problems with the Grammatik...lol).

I am 3 days into my Atkins Induction and have made some progress. I haven't bought any books on it and have only researched this WOE through the internet (plenty of resources out there!).

As far as being able to shop for LC foods on the economy, I usually buy the "Du Darfst" products and read labels (what little is provided :sarcasm ). I also have access to the Commissary on the military bases, so I buy my Atkins Nutritionals there. There is also a great website for Atkins Nutritionals, if you don't have access to the Commissary. You can look under www.Supermass.com and choose "Atkins Nutritionals" from the "Hersteller" list. They have tons of Atkins products, but not all. There is also a button (Low Carb Foods) that you can click that takes you to the page with all low carb products.

Your local "DM" also carries a variety of health foods that can aid you in your LC program. There are also various Bio stores that carry certain products that may be useful in LCing.

            Take Care!

thanks,i had to think of something good.and i remember a song here called that, and since chocolate is the hardest thing for me to give up,i thought it would be good.My husband had a huge bar of Milka laying around, and i resisted the temptation to eat it,i told myself that if i ate it i had no will power and didn't really want to lose weight,i still had to place it out of sight so i wouldn't still think about it but it worked....i didn't eat it or think about it! maybe i will get to the point to where it can lay on the table and i won't have the urge to eat it.

What a great story. You should be so proud of yourself! I would have eaten it... :no

I do ok most days, but I don't think I could pass up Belgian waffles or Europen chocolate :help Good thing I don't live over there!

Ok, I wouldn't trade all the sweets in the world for being fat again. Fortunately, most of the American chocolate is crap, so I'm not tempted.

HELP !!!! I may be going to Berlin in about a week. If I do go what are some things that I should expect? What do people eat at breakfast? What kind of local "street food" do you have? What time do people eat dinner? I guess any thing like that will be helpful. Thanks!

Berlin is a great city! I have only spent a couple of days there, but I really liked it. It is very alive. The shopping is good. The streetfood in Berlin is currywurst. And I think it is Atkins legal. (Except maybe for the red-sauce) But it is basically a sausage cut up into bite size pieces, sprinkeld with yellow curry powder and eaten with a wooden fork, and sometimes there is a red-sauce that is poured on it, but I havent had the red sauce. Also something called a Doner Kebab is popular street food. It is like a Greek Gyro only tasted better and they are made from either lamb or (my favourite) chicken! They come in a pita, which you will have to throw out, but I think the rest of the ingredients are legal, salad and Tzadziki sauce (I know I spelled that wrong) Dinner time is later than in the us, around 7 or 7:30, and the service is usually very slow. But one nice thing is that once you choose a table in a restaurant it is yours for the night. The waitress wont be trying to push you out. In fact you might have a hard time finding her when it is time to pay! Don't miss the "check point charlie museum" I thought it was really cool. I also went to the Egyptian museum which was also cool. For breakfast people eat different kinds of cold cuts and cheese and tomatoes and bread. Sometimes there will be a hard boiled egg. Sometimes there is liverwurst. You won't find bacon or scrambled eggs, unless you make them yourself.
                            I hope this helps!
Have a great time in Berlin!!!

Currywurst?? Sounds like a combiation of German and Indain food. I hope I do get to go as I am looking forward to a totallly new experience. I also have now read that Turkish food is very popular. I am glad to hear about the cold cuts and cheese at breakfast. I was worried that it may have been packed with bread!!!

                              Danke! :wave

Hi Sharni! Well, when you visit Berlin and do decide to have a currywurst, avoid having the ketchup with it (that's the red sauce on it). Instead ask them for mayo or mustard or a little of both. Other known street foods are the Turkish Doner (make sure the meat is not the ground/minced kind since it contains fillers. Look for the meet that looks like actual filets were used to make the slab of meat), grilled chicken and "Schweinebauch" which is like bacon only alot thicker and grilled like a steak. Just avoid the Leberkaese (which is like a thick slice of backed bologna but usually contains fillers) and the Frikadellen (which looks like a hamburger patty, but is ground pork and beef with bread crumbs as a filler).

The breakfast here usually consists of brotchen (bread rolls), cold cuts, cheese, etc. Usually at a restaurant or hotel, you will get all of these plus butter, sometimes fresh fruits and veggies (if it is a buffet) and sometimes eggs are served from the skillet or boiled.

Dinner is usually between 6 to 8pm for most people here.

Make sure to visit the Brandenburger Tor! That is the area of the annual Love Parade!
