      After gaining and losing and gaining and losing (and now stable at a decent weight), what I finally learned was this. You can't hate yourself into motivation. Or do it for anyone else. You will only succeed when you do it out of a commitment to be good to yourself and cherish yourself. Because then food is not nearly as likely to trigger all those dysfunctional "I deserve it, "I need it," etc. responses. Instead it's far easier to make better choices and stick to a plan because you're acting based on what will respect, cherish and nourish you, body and soul.
      Nobody's committment to a change is consistent though. This forum is a good way to reach out. There are also on-line tools specifically to help keep up better-eating motivation ( like www motivationtogo.net).

          I have to tell you all about a book I have been reading and what Angela has said here makes me want to share this book even more it’s called ‘Die Fat or Get Tough’ It talks about what Angela has talked about – that you HAVE to BE 100% to be successful – 99% only leads to failure!! Just put your mind to it!!! And be 100%.....

            This morning I too decided to get back on the band wagon and get my but in gear. I don't want these feelings sabotaging me anymore. I am really proud of you that you are going to do it too. It would be great, if you haven't done this already, to come over to the Second Time Around Forum and start posting there. That is where I mainly hang out. They have daily check in's and we can keep in contact and we encourage one another there.

            We need to stop blaming others for our downfall! I have lost 80lbs because I woke up one morning and saw ME in the mirrow after my shower. That was 1 1/2 year ago. My husband was concerened about my health, I do not belive that he ment to take me down because he said sometimes that I was a babe when he got married to me. I also have a Thyroid condition, but I looked at my weight as MY PROBLEM, I ATE MYSELF INTO THE OBISETY! It was nobody's fault but myself and I sometimes thought that I let my husband down, he married me when I took care of myself. There is a fundamental problem here if we blame others. We need to get real, take the bull by it's horns and work on our problems. I think I have done all this to myself... the weight and the weight loss.
            Now how I lost my 80lbs was because I disgusted myself. I started the Adkins Diet and took one day at a time, I did know it will take me a long time to loose. I had days where the pounds did not move anymore... so I started to excersise 2 times a week then it ended up to 7 times a week. No dinner if I was'nt at the GYM, I worked out right after work, my GYM bag in the car with me everyday. I did this allways, it was my way of live.
            I DID THIS FOR ME!
            Well now I serve in the Army as one of the older ones I am doing the hardes thing I ever done, but fit and healthy now. I boght a Motorcycle and I go on rides, and have ben told now that I am cool. (allways wanted to do this but was to big for a motorcycle).

            My point: To change yourself you need to stop blaming other things in your circle, you need to blame yourself and get real about yourself. Your husbands may not be tactful about your problems, but they are still there with you. Men say what they think, there is no underlining message there. Trust me I work with them I hear what is heavy on their heart, they do not talk about their sweathearts at home in a negative way, they get frustrated not beeing able to FIX it for them.

              Angela thanks for your post. I'm at the point where i had lost 20 lbs, then fell off the wagon. I can feel my clothes getting tighter again. And its so depressing. I now realize that if i REALLY want it i can't screw it up. I must keep positive and push on. Here i go again, with realistic goals in mind. thanks again.

                When I got my divorce I went back to school and was on welfare raising 2 kids. I got my teaching degree and a single mom in one of my classes that I was a substitute teacher in told my how I had inspired her! Me? Really? She told me she went back to school and got her degree. Well you just inspired me today. I have been on induction for a week and I am struggling bad. I too have tried Atkins more than most and I was successful the first time but I am a real bad emotional eater. I accept this but I will not accept this weight anymore. My wake up call was a picture I saw of myself at Thanksgiving that was taken without my permission because I HATE getting my picture taken! Please continue to write on this board and keep encouraging people like me who almost gave in and ate some chocolate, chips, bread and drank some Coke! Michelle

                  I just read you post from 2 years ago. How did you do? Did you reach your goal? I am planning to start the number umph time tomorrow. I will never give up. I keep reaching for the handle and I know I will find it and when I do, I plan to hold on.

                      We al will fall off the wagon... since this diet is susposed to be for live and there will be ocations where you just want to have fun at Holidays, birthdays or just sometimes treating yourself to a nice dinner with your "bad" habits. I think we need to be real and every now and then "cheat". But we have to get back on and don't let it get out of controll. Don't beat yourself up! It's not easy... It's not fast, take one day at a time and when you treat yourself or slip up... go back to what works. I guess I am lucky now, since I am Active Army... I can not afford to gain weight back and I have to do PT. But here in Iraq it is hard to do Atikins... since I do not prepare my food, I know that when I come home in a year or so that I will be with all of you again on the Atkins diet.

                        Wow you go girl!!! You can definetly achieve your goals if you put your mind to it. Your story is both touching and awesome to a woman who has walked in your shoes such as myself with the abuse and low self esteem. I too was a person who could never committ to the Atkins diet but now that I have matured and I realize what is really important to me like my health and my children, passing up the cheesy rich enchiladas and pastas and my # vice, tostada chips and queso, are a struggle but a lot easier to do when I consider the alternatives. I have not quite completed my first week and I already have 6 lbs down (Friday will be one wk). Keep on keeping on and if you ever want to chat, you have a friend in me.

                          Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!! Although that post is over 2 years old, I just now saw it and it helped me NOW!!!! Wherever you are and however you are doing right now (Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010), please take joy in the fact that you just helped someone else who was struggling. Just this evening, I cooked a pan of brownies (the old-fashioned kind, not Atkins!), with butter cream frosting, had two pieces, and then looked myself in the face and said, "WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO YOURSELF?!?" And I went into the kitchen, and threw the entire pan into the trash! (Yay, me!) This was a huge deal for me! I keep trying NOT to use food as an emotional outlet - but you know what a struggle that is! I LOVE your idea of setting the goal without a date - until I actually achieve it! Brilliant!

                          So, THANK YOU! We just never know how or when something we say or do can affect someone for the good. And you just helped me tremendously!

                                I just re-read Angela's post and it's just as relative now as it was then! We are the only ones who put food in our mouths and we are the only ones who can change our behaviors!
