  • Radish: Taming a Fireball

    Hi!
I am posting this here because many of you may have read Zarabelle's recent post asking for crockpot recipes. Somewhere on her thread, FatActressinLA suggested tossing a few radishes into a soup/stew. They release their colour and peppery taste and behave like tiny parisienne potatoes.
My DH, who is along with me on this WOE, is a potato lover. I have tweaked the mashed fauxtato recipe about a million times, but he is never fully fooled along side a roast beef. I wish I could describe the look in his eyes when he ate a whole crockpot cooked radish at dinner on Friday!!! The flavour and texture were right on. I was so excited, I boiled a bunch of radishes yesterday afternoon. I sliced them, arranged them in a small quiche dish in a spiral pattern and topped it with 3 T of heavy cream, Mrs Dash seasoning and 2 oz grated cheese. I baked it in a 350 oven for 25 minutes. Scalloped radishes of my dreams.
So, a heartfelt thank-you to FatActressinLA for the idea . I have not had a radish past my lips since I was 7 - I have hated the little fireballs ever since. Radish roses are for garnish! I love spicy food, but that's different!

      Re: Radish: Taming a Fireball

I have tried the cooked radishes, and they were pretty good. I never could like the faux mashed potatoes (cauliflower) with all that cream cheese, but like cauliflower now, cooked, where I used to hate it. I love the 'just like twice baked potatoes' made with cauliflower.

I think you have to play around with the substitute veggies. I liked almost all veggies as a kid except cooked turnips. I hated when my mom would make boiled potatoes and turnips and I had to try to eat around the turnips. Now, they are my favorite substitute for potatoes. I am a potato salad freak, and I make my potato salad just like I used to except use turnip in place of potato and the Mt. Olive Splenda sweetened pickle relish. I just finished off a batch and I couldn't tell the difference. I use them all the time in soup, and they work great.

      Sunny!

Oh yes, I love cooked radishes. They are yummy in roasts. Also I like making clam chowder with them and putting them in soups. Enjoy!

Hmm, I've never really thought about radishes. I grew some a few years ago, but messed them up with not enough water, or maybe it was too much. Anyway, they were unbelievably hot. Kinda put me off radishes, but this makes me want to give them a try again.

Turnips huh? I've never eaten one in my life...guess it's time to try them as I LOVE my old potato salad made with red potatoes, sour cream, red onions and dill. Might have to bring that out again and try it with the turnips!

Ok, that's it, I'm buying radishes tomorrow to put in the the roast I bought yesterday. I read the Crockpot post about the radishes and dismissed it entirely. I'm not a very good cook and I was sure it wouldn't turn out at all. But now you've inspired me.

Oooo I wonder if I can use them on St patty's day with corned beef and cabbage..mmmmm

I can second the radish vote! YUM!

Also, I tried fried grated cauliflower last night with garlic and a splash of soy sauce. OMG! It had exactly the same texture as fried rice. You have to try it.

Ok Sunny! very sceptically, I bought turnips this morning, chopped them up and boiled them for potato salad. To be honest I wasn't expecting much. I just drained them, put butter, salt and white pepper in them and tasted a chunck before they cooled. I have to take my hat off to you! If I didn't know they were turnips, I'd swear they were boiled potatoes! I haven't mixed them to make the salad yet.. I have to wait for them to cool but.... so far so good! thanks a bazillion!!! I'll give an update after it's all done and refrigerated for a few hours.

I did not peel them, just cut the ends off, then chopped them into like 1-2 inch cubes and boiled them. I didn't time it, but I'm guessing it was similar to potatoes, like 10 minutes at a full boil. every couple minutes I scooped a chunk out and stuck a fork in it till it was soft. I just had some for dinner. I think I put to many onions in for me, but as far as the turnips, it really is VERY similar and I bet I could fool many people. I think I can tell the difference, but I think it's because I know they are turnips, still it is awesome! Now I have radishes in the Crockpot for tomorrow night.... we'll see.

I do peel them, but just because I always peeled them to eat raw. I might try it with the peeling on to see if it is good like that. The peeling has a lot of fiber and if it is like most fruits and veggies, a lot of nutrition is in the skin or peeling.
