Re: Week of Nov 12 Atkinites

I am glad to see that there are a few folks on the train together. Todd4005, in order to keep track of water I have been using a nalgene bottle that is 32 oz. It has a wide mouth and I seem to drink it farily fast. It is easy to keep track of since I only have to drink two of them and I have met the minimum. I was watching my water intake as I was having severe muscle cramps in the second day. Today is the fourth day and it is much better. Still got a headache though.

Has anyone else had problems with food that is low carb but still triggers that "eat the whole bowl" response. I have been putting vineger and oil on my salad and for some reason I feel like I could just grab the bottel and drink it dry, I have also been over indulging in cheese a little bit and would guess that I have been hitting about 30 grams of carbs per day because of it.

Bekka, thanks for reminding me about the water the other day as that may have been a big reason for th cramps. I made some of those "tuna muffins" last night and found them to be outstanding. I am going to try it with Salmon tonight. I live in Alaska and have huge freezer full of salmon so I may as well found new ways to eat them!

Has anyone else had crazy dreams? This morning I woke up dreaming about big ole muffins coated with crystal sugar. Kind of sucked to go eat eggs with that on my mind. I hope everyone's day went well.

Re: Week of Nov 12 Atkinites

          Hello Futurerancher,

I just started Induction yesterday and I'd love to partner up with you guys for support. I've tried Atkins in the past and it worked, can't remember exactly how much I lost, but I quit pretty much about a month later. (Addicted to carbs!) Anyway, since then I've tried all sorts of diets, such as low-fat, low-cal, and a number of weight-loss supplements, but none have worked. I'm ready to give it another shot, I know it would have worked last time but I didnt have too much weight to loose so I gave up after I had shed enough lbs. to not feel too bad. This time I have more weight to loose and I am more determined to reach my goal. I want to loose 25 lbs, I havent established my goal date yet, hopefully as soon as possible.

My Meals so far have been as follows, let me know if I am doing this right.

          Yesterday:

          Breakfast: 3 egg whites
          3 sausage links
1 cup of bllack coffee w/ Splenda

          Lunch: 1 chicken breast
          1 green salad

Dinner: 1 small Steak wrapped in bacon
1 bowl of mushroom soup (low-carb recipe i found online)

Snacks: 2 beef jerkey sticks and 2 mozzarella sticks (distributed in the day)

          Today:

          Breakfast: 3 egg whites
          3 sausage links
1 cup of bllack coffee w/ Splenda

          Lunch: Hot wings
1 green salad with romano cheese

          Dinner is undecided yet.

Let me know if you all have any suggestions on my meal plans. I work full-time and attend college full-time so I try to keep them as simple as possible so that preparing food won't become too hectic and make me quit.

          Good luck to all!

Re: Week of Nov 12 Atkinites

Mari rea, glad to have you on board. Stick with the group here and we will take it as far as possible. The hardest thing for me is that after I have a bad day I usually just throw up my hands and quit and within a short period of time I am back to where I started at. I have excepted the fact that I will not be perfect on this new way of eating and will have days full of failure. The challenge for us is to not quit after a bad day.

You menu looks great but I think I remember in the Atkins book (2002) that he suggest you eat the yolks in the eggs as it will give you more protein and leaving them out can actually set you back (or something along those lines.)
One other thing, as I was reading some of the success stories it occured to me how long it took for these people to get to their goal weights. Sometimes it took 2 years. Youch that sounds tough but that is why we are changing are eating habits for good right?

I think I will just cook my meal, label it, clean my stuff and scoot my butt out of there before I get any cravings whatsoever.

Re: Week of Nov 12 Atkinites

Actually I dont mind leaving the yolks in but I have breakfast with my husband and he likes eating only egg whites. I know it says to leave the yolks in but I didnt think it would be too bad to leave them out. I guess I'm just trying to save time on cooking two different types of eggs. But you're right, its best if i just go by the book, I'll start tomorrow with that. Thanks.

Re: Week of Nov 12 Atkinites

Hi folks, I hope everyone has had a good cheat free day. So far im doing great with no-cheats. I had my breakfast this morning, and put it in fitday, then i had a salad for lunch with

                    lettuce
                    cucumbers
                    tomatoes
                    celery
                    and ranch dressing

total carbs for today so far is 15 carbs, so i will be hitting close to 20 carbs after supper. Im drinking plenty of water. Rancher, on my water Im using 20 oz water bottles, so i drank about 4 bottles for my 64 oz but it seems im going over that amount today, i dont think it matters much though. Im also taking centrum silver as a vitamin supplement. I rather take one vitamin than a whole bunch. Is everyone here taking a vitamin supplement yet?

Good job you guys!!! =) I am eating my 7 carb Chipotle right now. And MMMM it is sure delicious!! I am so uberly tired though. I didn't get that much sleep last night and I don't know why that is. I can't seem to get myself into a comfortable position.

Mari Rea, welcome aboard! I started yesterday as well. Your menu is way awesome, but let me give you some advice which might be hard to get away from, but I will tell you anyway. Coffee can stall you and so can splenda, so be careful with those two ingredients in your meal plan. Water is the key to everything, especially with induction! If you need anything, you know where to find me.

Re: Week of Nov 12 Atkinites

                        Good evening everyone,

I have not had a great day. Okay. I got discouraged after reading the forum last night about the induction. I had just came in from buying a lot of swans food that I thought would be okay for induction. Precooked egg, cheese omelets, old country sausauge patties, 4net carb butter pecon ice cream.

Well after reading the forum and then scanning through the Atkins Revoulution book I kind of got discouraged. So I am starting again. I could not bear to give away my ice cream so I have eaten quite a bit of it.

Then I looked on the back of the box and it is 15 carbs per serving. I totally don't understand the net stuff. I will though. I have the Atkins book back out and I am going to read and re-read. I figure that I will be totally into induction by Monday. I also only had a cup of coffee today which the majority of it was caffine free and about 4 equal with 3 creamers they said they didn't have any carbs except the vanila. Any whoo ... my head is killing me. I think I am in caffine withdrawls because usually i have coffee most of the day.

But besides the ice cream ... I havn't done so bad. 1/2 egg omelet this morning, they are not so good. Plus I was scared it had some hidden sugar. With 1/2 decaf coffee.

Lunch - brocoli and chees with 4 chicken wingetts

Dinner - most of the ice cream, 6 chcken wingetts -buffallo style wings

42.5 oz water ,,, I am not through yet for tonight.

Ice cream has tore up my stomach and I ate a little too much i am stuffed.
But that is the one thing I love about the Atkins plan, even my version, is that you get full off of one or two bits.

But the flip side ... per Dr. A book I am not metabolicly resistant. Because although I thought I was following the "Atkins" plan, and wasn't as stickly as I need to be ... I still lost 12 pounds and losing.

So watch out when I get this induction down pack.

Well, I will check in tomorrow.

Good night - lets make it a carb free day.

                          Daione,

I couldn't help but laugh when you said that you just could'nt let the paid for icecream go because that is so me! No ice cream is safe from me at any time or day and hearing that you got to eat some made me kind of jeolous in a weird way I guess. It sounds like you are an ideal candidate for Atkins as you didn't follow induction perfect but you still lost weight. From what I have gathered on this board, the people that have had great success all stuck to the induction plan to a T. Once out of the first two weeks each very slowly began to find out what worked for them. Some don't have a problem with Splenda and coffee while others can't even look at it without stalling out. Stick with us through the induction phase, because believe it or not, WE ALL NEED YOU! Just keep posting. I am about to finish day 4 which is the longest I have made it on any eating plan for years and I really believe it is because of this message board. Everytime I get that special craving I sit down and start going through people's success stories. So far it has worked.

As far as NET Carbs when looking on the nuthrional information you take the total carbs and subtract it from protein carbs as they don't have effect on insulin. So if you had 12 total carbs, with 2 grams of Protein carbs and 6 grams of sugar carbs you would subtract 12-2 for a total of 10 NET carbs. Hopefully I explained that right and if I didn't please someone correct me!

Todd, excellent job man. keep up the good work. By the way, what is fitday?
As far as water is concerned Esteliana had a formula somewhere about the amount of water you should drink in comparison to how much you want to lose. I can't remember where I saw that though. Keep up the good work everyone.

Supper time for me has been the hardest time as I have to deal with the free time and I have always eaten my largest meals then. I hope everyone can make it through the rest of the day.

My good luck and best wishes to all of you, too! Rancher, this is a really great idea. I have a special closeness with others from my "class" (Summer/Fall 2006) that all started together... having allies who understand what you're feeling and are right where you are helps tremendously.

Hang in there these first few days, guys.... just a few days, and appetite supression will kick in, which is absolutely a Godsend. It will get so much easier to resist the crap. In the meantime, when you feel tempted, grab a bottle of water and come here, if you can. Someone will be around to talk you out of whatever you're considering, I guarantee it! You can do it!

Re: Week of Nov 12 Atkinites

Oh, it sounds like you guys are doing great!

                                Net Carbs:

Total Carbs minus Fiber equals Net carbs

So, for instance, here is the nutrition label for broccoli: http://freshcutproduce.com/nutrifax/broccoli.html

                                Nutrition Facts
                                Serving Size : 1 medium stalk (148g)
                                Calories 45
                                Total Fat 0.5 g
                                Cholesterol 0 mg
                                Sodium 55mg
                                Total Carbohydrate 8g
                                Dietary Fiber 5g
                                Sugars 3g
                                Protein 5g

You take total carbs minus fiber = net carbs
8-5=3 net carbs for 1 medium stalk of broccoli that weighs 148 grams

One thing to NOTE: There are sugars listed here. WHAT??? Sugar in broccoli? How can that be? Well, there are naturally occurring sugars in most everything except for meats and pure fat sources. Do not be scared of these naturally occurring sugars. They are NATURAL. When reading labels, any time you see sugars on a label, look down to the list of ingredients. If sugar or high fructose corn syrup, or corn syrup or corn syrup solids and such is listed as an ingredient...PUT THE PRODUCT BACK. However, if it lists sugars in the label, but none in the ingredients, that means the sugar is naturally occurring and you can have it. Nothing to worry about.

This gets most confusing on cream cheese labels and tomato sauces. All tomato sauces will have naturally occurring sugars. However, you always want to find one that does not list sugar as an ingredient. That means they ADDED sugar to the tomato sauce.

                                Hope that helps.

Oh, another thing. There are some people who will also subtract sugar alcohols from the total carb count. I, personally, do not. Some people find that their bodies will use sugar alcohols just as if they were the real sugar. You can only find this out for yourself. BUT, these types of products are best left out of your induction diet.
