What Elizellen says is true, but you wouldn't be the only person not to give up caffeine.

My husband and I compromised. We drink 'half caf' (however, when I go to the market to "make" it, I put in more decaf than caffeine!).

Re: ? re: caffeine and/or splenda

Some people 'wean' themselves gradually from full strength caffeinated coffee to decaffeinated by adding more decaf proportionally over a few weeks till they arrive at completely decaf.

Which type of soda are you drinking? The only soda with Splenda I can find is Diet Rite, but it doesn't have caffeine. The caffeine withdrawals are killing me, but I really didn't want to succumb to aspartame.

Are you not weaning from the caffeine?

If you need some caffeine to help with the headache, have some tea. Or an Excedrin.

Re: ? re: caffeine and/or splenda

The last time I dropped caffeine the withdrawals weren't as bad, so I was hoping I could get away with it. Plus I hadn't realized that Diet Rite was caffeine free until a couple days ago. I was wondering why I was having caffeine withdrawal symptoms when I was still drinking some.

I hate tea, every tea I've had taste like dirt (I have pretty severe sensory and taste issues). And I can't take Excedrin because it's contraindicated with a medication I take.

Then you either suffer through the withdrawal or find a diet soda with caffeine.

Well that's pretty obvious. Hence the reason I was asking about the soda the OP is drinking since she mentioned it having Splenda and caffeine.

I'm dealing with it. Would just love to help the headaches ease up through some wonderful caffeine. But not enough to have aspartame again.

Well then I read the OP wrong. I read it as though the caffeine withdrawal and induction flu was too much, so she started drinking a soda with caffeine and Splenda.

Re: ? re: caffeine and/or splenda

HereKitty, actually I started out with diet coke that has a version sweetened with splenda, as I was attempting to cut back on the caffeine as well, I found diet rite with no caffeine and sweetened with splenda...so either way, at most we should only have 3 servings because of the sweetener and Dr. A recommends getting off caffeine so at least the diet rite has one thing going for it. My plan was to have the 1 diet coke/splenda in the am and then if I had any more during the day it would be the diet rite, but once I read somewhere that the splenda should be counted as a serving of sweetener, I obviously wanted to cut that back too. Not to mention, I needed to up the water.

Yesterday I did very well. 1 diet coke/splenda in the am and 1 diet rite in the eve. Good for me the addict anyway! Today I had a couple more diet rite because we ran out of bottled water, our tap water is awful, but it is storming here (DFW) and now I don't want to go to the store OR drink any more soda, so I'm downing the tap water.

If I die, I'll know why, lol

I finally did take a couple sudafed yeserday for the caffeine withdrawals and/or sinus headache and felt much better. Didn't need any today.

Now hubby made me some Celestial Seasoning apple cinnamon tea (supposedly no carb but I bet there's some, not to mention he sweetened it with splenda, so I had to give him the explanation behind splenda having 1 carb...)

Which brings me to another question about the splenda. I've seen several people post that splenda packets should be counted as one carb, I assumed one serving of soda with splenda should be counted the same way. I read one post however that said the splenda used to sweeten soda is a liquid and does not contain the carbohydrate used in the powder. Does anyone know anything about this?
Lost 100lbs+ since May '09 with a variety of methods, calorie counting, low fat, low carb (not Atkins strict), zig zagging, etc. Would switch up diet and exercise as I stalled to reboot loss. Prior to Atkins I was about 1000cals/day, exercising fairly hard and NOT losing...so here I am to finish the job.

Re: ? re: caffeine and/or splenda

I didn't give up caffeine. I still have 1 cup a day with all my splenda and cream. But if you can cut caffeine more power to you. I didn't have enough will power to give that up. I'd rather give up my daily cookies than coffee.

Lisa, it's my understanding liquid splenda has nil carbs. But get the advice from the others on the board. 1 pckt of splenda has .97 carbs. I think another reason to decrease splenda/sweetner use is to also decrease sugar cravings. The purpose is two fold.

If I am wrong anyone, call me out.
