  • On the verge of giving up

    Hello Everyone!

I started Atkins in March of 2003. I lost 40 lbs and have kept most of it off but here in the last 6 months I have gained 13 lbs (due to cheating) so I went back on induction. Tomorrow will be day 14 of induction and I have not cheated at all!! In fact I did it better this time than I did the first time, the only problem is that I have only lost 1 pound!!! Could it be that I had no water weight to lose because all I ever drink is water? Do I need to stay on induction longer? Has my body built up a resistance to weight loss since I have been on a low carb diet for so long? Please help!! I am on the verge of tossing in the towel!

1 pound lost is better than a pound gained!! Stick in there and don't forget to measure, the scales can be the devil sometimes!!!!!!

Also jeep in mind the total amount you wish to lose, which appears to be 15 pounds. You'll lose a percentage of it in induction, I think 10-15%? So if you had 50 pounds to lose, then 5 pounds would be 10% so for you 10% is only 1.5 pounds. Alot of people tend to slow down after the first time on the wol also. Think of the long term. You now only have 14 to go and you can work on maintaining instead of trying to get there and not knowing how to keep it there.

Just hang in there Britt...don't be a slave to the scales. They aren't always a good indicator of success. Take measurements...that will mean more (I was stuck at 184 for a month according to the scale but went from a 31" waist to 30" during that time).

Also remember...when you have less weight to lose you're most likely going to lose it slowly. I average between .5 and 1 pound a week since I hit 190 but was regularily losing 4-5 per week before that.

Trust me...1 lb is a great success and it's one pound less than you were before so keep up the good work!

Re: On the verge of giving up

so what you doing for the mandatory exercise part of your Atkins both the resistance and the aerobic?

what you eating? are you over eating your Atkins? alot of people don't realize that as they shrink they need less fuel to do the exact same things about 9 cals a pound for femals so have you lowered your portion sized for you new smaller body? remember Atkins is about eating as much of the legal foods as it takes to satisfy your hunger at the time you are eating and stopping even if you still got legal food on the plate, carbs in your budget and/or room in your belly. And we only eat when we are hungry not cause it is meal time so if you are not hungry don't eat a full meal and if it has been 6 hrs since the last time you ate and you aren't hugry just have a small protein/fat snack with some of your veggies.

Oh and how many inches dod you lose during your 14 day induction? remember this is about getting you smaller and healtheir for life not yesterday.

              Happy low carbing

To 2big4mysiz, I run once a week and and do crunches and situps the rest of the week. I could bump my exercise up a notch. I dont think I have a problem with eating too much, but I am addicted to sugar free candy

I dont think its the water, before i went on induction all i ever drank was water. Maybe a glass of unsweet decaf tea once every few months.

REmember that the less you have to loose, the more slowly it will come off. Also, could be the sugar-free candy. The things they sweeten them with could cause stalls.

if you are putting on muscle while loosing fat you could actuall gain weight. look at how your clothes are fitting. muscle takes up less space than fat pound for pound.- keep going

Re: On the verge of giving up

The sugar-free candy could be hurting you, Britt. A lot of people say it affects their weight loss. I would highly recommend avoiding it for just a few days as a test, and also up your cadio those days. I suspect you might see a difference.

It's also very true that with so little left to lose, it's going to go VERY slowly -- you have to be a lot more patient this time around.

Are you tracking what you eat? www.fitday.com is a great place to do that, with a great added benefit: it tracks the percentage of calories you're getting from carbs, fat, and protein, which helps you to be sure your ratio is right (60% fat; 35% protien; 5% carbs). For me, that seems to make a big difference.

I was ready to quit a week ago because I had gained and lost the same 3-4 lbs for weeks. I was very frustrated. But, I stuck with it -- thanks to encouragement from folks here -- and it has paid off.

So, I'll give you the advice others gave me. Just give it another few weeks, and take some of the advice folks have offered you here. What do you have to lose by sticking around a bit longer -- besides more weight?

Does sugar free candy have carbs? 1 pack of Splenda has carbs, for example, so that's why I'm wondering.

Maybe someone can better help you here if you post what you ate yesterday, or today. Are you eating enough fats?
