Re: Atkins Products Okay to Replace Meals?

I feel that I do good with my veggies. Could I add back nuts or cottage cheese first?

      OWL Rung 1 is vegetables.

Then you can add back fresh cheeses (like cottage cheese), yogurt... milk, if you wish.

      Then come nuts.

My advice is to follow DANDR.

If I can do induction for 2 weeks, then I can wait another week for cottage cheese.

<<I feel that I do good with my veggies.<<

How many net carbs per day are you getting?

Atkins is more about the vegetables than anything else ... regardless of what phase you're in, having more than 50% of your daily net carbs coming from appropriate vegetables is good.

After reading the Two Week Essentials chapter on "Are you ready to move on?", I have decided to do induction until I am at 128 pounds. My goal weight is 118, maybe 115, and I am at 137 right now. I read in the "Two Week" book that I can add nuts at this point without going on to OWL. That's my plan and I'm stickin' to it!

Re: Atkins Products Okay to Replace Meals?

The book you need to read is Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (2002). The book you're reading was written AFTER Dr. Atkins's death and while it has many wonderful things, it is mainly a book on how to do Induction.

Your "plan" is flawed ... you may have short term success with it ... however, it's really long term success that you should be after.

It is your choice what to do naturally
Just know that that book is not what we follow here. We use DANDR - that version was published after Atkins' death and contain some additions by the company.
I am sure interesting to hear about your experience though.

Some of the "additions by the company" are quite useful ... the FAQs, the how to eat different cuisines ...

It's a good companion to DANDR ... however, one can't use it for all the phases.

What I remember about it was all the Atkins mixes it told me to use in all recipes. It was quite annoying actually. But it has been awhile since I looked at that book. I don't own a copy of that one. (I don't care for the company - there I said it )

Well ... one time I counted up all the references to products in the book ... if I recall correctly ... there were 39. And ... there were WARNINGS about the products ... though people tend to ignore those.

I suspect there's about that many references to Atkins products in DANDR.

AE isn't a perfect book ... it has some good points ... having lots of FAQs is handy to anyone starting out (would that DANDR had them!).

                      >>(I don't care for the company - there I said it>>

                      No ... really!

Just because something got printed after Dr. Atkins's death doesn't mean that there isn't some value in it.

Re: Atkins Products Okay to Replace Meals?

As the others have said, we follow DANDR here, so a move to OWL would mean adding more induction veg first, then more dairy (milk/cottage cheese/yogurt) then the nuts.
One thing to consider when thinking of using the bars - check the list of ingredients to determine for yourself which rung of OWL they would be 'legal' Most contain either soy (6th OWL rung) or grains of some kind (rung 9) so whatever they say on the packet, they really are not induction foods if you are following DANDR.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Re: Atkins Products Okay to Replace Meals?

I am hypothyroid, too. It is better to avoid soy products because they interfere with your medication. Some people are very sensitive to it, others are not. Soy milk, soy protein, and sobean oil should be avoided (most vegetable oils are soy, unless it says otherwise). Soy lecithin is ok.
The shakes and bars have a lot of soy protein.
It seems like they are not affecting your weight loss. But instead of a bar for breakfast, have cheese sticks. Save the bars for an occasional treat.

I like the shakes for the same reason--fast breakfast in the morning. Not hungry enough to cook anything, and I occasionally get an aversion to eggs--can't eat them at all, unless they are in egg salad. So I do make egg salad, with mayo, mustard and celery, and eat a few spoonfuls of that. Whe I run out, I'll drink a shake. I keep them as back-up.
The Slim Fast lo-carb shakes do not have soy as their base. So I try to get those instead. But I like the Cafe Caramel Atkins shakes, and the strawberry ones, too, so I get them every now and then.

I'm not an expert here. I'm a newbie! However, I can tell you those Atkins bars and drinks completely stalled my weight loss. I used them years ago when I did Atkins to lose 20 lbs. This time I'm going to change the way I eat forever, not just to lose a few pounds. I hope that helps. Good luck!

Just because something got printed after Dr. Atkins's death doesn't mean that there isn't some value in it.
There's *some* value in a snickers bar too. I mean there are peanuts and milk in it somewhere, afterall.

I found AE to be more of a Cliff Notes version, really. Some great suggestions, absolutely, but still a Cliff Notes version.....and we all know what happens when we study for tests with Cliff Notes.

ameise- Low carb junk food is *still* junk food. I'd strongly suggest you do a little prep and planning and leave the junk food on the shelves. You'll learn better eating habits, experience more success, and stop feeding the habits that landed ya here.

                                I wish you success!
