  • Some People!!!

I met a lady yesterday, she is 28 years old and is getting married in October. It was a very cold and windy day with lots of rain around and we were at a market, I was selling my jam and she was selling her unwanted stuff out of her boot.

I watched her eat a doughnut with her coffee first thing. Doughnuts I thought, I bet the poor thing has no idea how bad they are for her. She joked with me about loving jam but how she tried not to eat it as it made her fat. I agreed and thought long and hard about "The Doughnut".

Sometime later I saw her eating another doughnut. Now by this time we had grumbled about the weather together and she had told me a little about herself, so I thought what the heck?

My husband and I are eating the Atkins way, we have both lost lots of weight and feel great, you know you shouldn't really be eating so many doughnuts if you want to lose weight for your wedding.

Her reply knocked me over a little. Oh yes the Atkins Diet I have been on it for 2 years and have gone from a size 34 to an 18/16 great isn't it. I had to pay for two seats when I went to America last and I thought, never again but then the doctor told me I shouldn't be on a low sugar diet because of my Addisons Disease.

I looked up the illness and found that some people may suffer from low blood sugar and low blood pressure.

Then I thought but that is what low carb prevents. This lady went on to eat a whole bag of doughnuts, they cook em hot and fresh at the market and then dunk them in SUGAR.

Now, maybe I am wrong to think that this is daft, a young woman who has been eating Atkins for two years is now back on the rocky road of putting all that weight back on again.

I didn't argue because she just kept saying that the doctor said, the doctor advised, so I just shut up and came home thinking that some people will never learn. Maybe I am wrong anyone like to comment?

I don't know anything about Addisons Disease, but it's very sad that someone who was seeing good results on Atkins is now likely to end up right back where she started weightwise, if not heavier.
Dunking doughnuts in sugar seem to me to be a recipe for disaster!

I know, and I wanted so to be motherly and say what was on my mind but she really felt the doctor knew best or was it something else? The doctor had given her an excuse to eat what she really wanted to eat and damn the consequenses.

I wanted to make a big deal of this, which I did not have a right to do afterall she is a grown up but.............

I am going through the absolute honeymoon period with Atkins, I love it unconditionally and don't even hanker after bread, burgers, fries and doughnuts. I suppose I have never been a doughnut person.

That's terrific that you're having a honeymoon phase of Atkins. You know... I bet that the honeymoon will never end, and just get better and better!
        That's what happened to me!

After working so hard to lose the weight. Why would anyone want to ruin their
efforts by eating a bag of doughnuts?

I am still on the honeymoon phase as well. I hope it last awhile. I ran into someone that I had not seen in a few years and they were commenting how healthy and toned I looked. I will take that!

I haven't felt this good in a long time. I used to have frequent migraines headaches and Insomnia. I don't think I have had one headache since the beginning "Induction Flu" stage. I have tons of energy and have been much more productive.

I crave good healthy vegetables and berries as my treat. This coming from a sweetaholic! I have only had one low carb beer since starting Atkins. I was disappointed with it. It didn't taste as good as I remembered it. I have gotten used to the taste of splenda. I also now have a liking for low carb whole wheat tortilla shells. Never used to like anything like that. Now I eat them as an occasional splurge.

It fun to take a recipe out of the cookbook and make it low carb.

I love to hear about people who are feeling well after changing their lives. I want the whole world to know about Dr Atkins he should be Sir Dr Atkins or even Saint Atkins.

                  That girl was confused -

                  TREATMENT FOR ADDISONS —
                  • Maintain a good nourishing diet. Include Nova Scotia dulse or Norwegian kelp for trace minerals. Fresh, raw, and cooked greens and garlic should be part of your regime.
                  • Avoid tobacco, alcohol, caffeine, and soft drinks. Do not use sugar foods, fried foods, processed or junk foods. Do not eat meat.

I don't know about confused, maybe she just wanted an excuse to revert back to her old way of eating. Watching her chomping on the doughnuts made me feel that it was not a health thing at all. People need to be honest with themselves when they start Atkins. I know I am healthier and feel better when I am not eating carbs and sugar. However, just recently I have found myself wanting to try just a little ice cream, just a little pizza, there is no other reason I can honestly own up to other than I just want ice cream and pizza. Like all addicts I will take one day at a time and not give up trying to banish the sugar devil.

The thing is you can't tell people what they should or shouldn't eat - it's personal choice at the end of the day. We all know that if we want to get to goal and stay there then you shouldn't diet but commit to a healthier lifestyle.Hence the atkins woe. She probably said that because she felt guilty and embarrassed you'd pointed it out to her. Plus, she may not be eating like that EVERY day if you can't indulge once in a while then you're really not going to stick to it. I don't know about anyone else but if I feel deprived then that's when I start to crave and want to 'binge' then.

I'm sure that she's feeling really sick today from all that sugar so is back on track

You are so right. I always have to have my say, cos I am a nosey woman. I agree with everything you say and hope that she didn't feel too bad.

WOW.. I think I would have had to have bitten my tongue too if I saw a person eating a BAG of donuts, while they claimed to be doing Atkins as well! OMGG! That's insane!

As for feeding a craving "having a cheat", ok so one has a donut and gets it over and done with (not that I'm saying it is ok.. cause we all know it's not)... but a BAG full of them?? That tells me the person can't be that serious about changing there lifestyle. Possibly a yo-yo dieter?

I applaud you for not going off on her! That must have taken great strength.. As for her "Disease", I would say the disease is really called making excuses. Just my opinion.

I have to say that doughnuts are not something that I would eat a bag full of, however, Ben and Jerry Phish Food or the Chunky Monkey now that is another tale to tell.

If we were carrying on a conversation and I was aware she was on Atkins but was wolfing down donuts, I would have said, "Hey, where'd you get the carb-free donuts?" with a smile and a wink. That's how I am... love to use humor with most everything and that's not a negative thing to say either and she would probably get a chuckle out of it and maybe even a wake-up call which we all need on occasion in a friendly way.
