  • Re: ~*~ Back To Basics ~*~

    Greetings, All

Wow, there's been a lot of activity here in the last few days! Cool.

Jo, don't worry about it if you can't read through the whole thread. I wish I could say that there are some magic pearls of wisdom in here that are guaranteed to turn you around, but there's not. Like Joy, I seem to always have something out of balance in the equation... if I'm eating well, my exercise sucks. When my exercise is good, my eating sucks. It's always something. And I've had to get over the 120 thing, too. I managed to stay there consistently for a couple of months early in the year, but I'm afraid those days are long gone. It takes a great deal of effort just to stay at 125 (that's naked, on my scale, which weighs me 4 pounds less than my doc's scale)

Q, I wish that I could say that my eating is always good. For the longest time, eating was SO easy for me. Really, it was a breeze! I was always satisfied, and never gave food a second thought. Oh, how times have changed. I have still never eaten a single food that is off-plan, but I do have portion control issues at times, and am sick of a lot of the food that I used to love. So I'm thinking a lot more about food lately, and that sucks.

Monie, I think it's great that you are searching out recipes now for the upcoming holidays. Really, they will be here before you know it. Once August ends, it seems like the end of the year comes really quickly. You'll be prepared. Smart!

Heidi, I hope that you get to the point where you can resist DH's junk. Thankfully, I don't really have a problem passing on Barry's stuff. And it's a good thing, because I'd be in trouble otherwise. He doesn't eat very much food at all overall, but he does like something sweet every night. He got on the scale a few minutes ago, and fully clothed with shoes, just after finishing dinner, he only weighs 135. It's so not fair.

    Yep, it's just not fair.

Time to put on my big girl panties, and deal with it.

      Jo,

i'm sure the stress (cortisol) has contributed significantly to your scale weight. Since my eating has been so good since the beginning of the year, it can ONLY be two things:
      1) Stress from:
      a) going back to school for my Masters's
      b) My grandmother's passing
      c) My Mom's diagnosis with breast cancer
      and
      2) Lack of exercise

When i think of how stressful it's been for me, I'm humbled because it's HAD to be nothing compared to what your stress level has been. If you just continue to eat right, it will eventually come back off. And, if it doesn't, then we'll just have to learn how to support you if that time comes.

I think it's great that Jack supports your needing to eat earlier. I can relate to that too, as some nights I don't get home from school until after 10...I certainly don't want to eat that late. Sometimes I can't help it because I'm ravenous.

          Sherri!

I was just thinking about this thread earlier today, and I'm thrilled to see you take advantage of it for the support you need!

Those sweeteners are something else, aren't they? I still can't go without them entirely, but I have certainly cut back. They definitely do have the potential to ignite cravings, that's for sure.

I've already been thinking about Thanksgiving, because that's the next time I will see a lot of my relatives. I made goal 2 weeks before Thanksgiving last year, and there are a couple of uncles of mine who are thinking that I probably won't be able to maintain it for very long. They have no ill intent... it's just they struggle with weight, too, and know how difficult it can be. They are very familiar with Atkins, but think that it's too hard to stick too. I weighed in this morning at my goal weight, so the number on the scale isn't the problem. I do, however, want to tone up! So I'm right there with you, with commiting to exercise.

Thanks again for reviving the thread!

I'm going to re-commit...again! I'll be seeing a friend who I haven't seen in 6 yrs in November. It would be great to be at my goal when I see her.

I'm going to start exercising tomorrow AM. I read on another board about committing to something for 30 days...well, I'm starting tomorrow and I'm going to commit to exercising for 30 days. I know I'm only hurting myself when I don't. I need to get that endurance I had back. I'm back in school now and also working part time 2 nights a week, so I need all the energy I can get. Exercising in the AM is a big part of my energy.

Eating is not the problem. I've been on track with that. That's never been my issue...it's always been exercise!

And lately, water has been a problem. I don't have time in my day to take a drink! I'm going to have to just make sure I have my bottles of water in my room and make it a priority to drink.

my back to basics is going great. i think the turn around was just committing to it in my journal.
i dropped back from posting to 'downer' threads and posts. i really thought about where i was and where i want to be. putting things in perspective.
BTB part II for me was getting back to eating better portions of things. things are tasting pretty much normal to me now so eating 'right' is much easier. i have lost a couple pounds since i quit radiation and i'm only 1 to 2 pounds from my original goal weight.
i'm not fretting over things, keeping busy with exercise and not overloading with board things. i'm here sometimes to what might appear as 'all day' but there are days when i hardly visit.

                Good Evening, All

Q, it's great to see you checking in! I want to commit to 30 days of exercise, too... I really want to go into Thanksgiving feeling good, because that helps me to stay strong. I think we're smart to get a handle on that now.

Jimmie, congrats on finding a balance! So, so important... and not always easy to do. It sounds like you've got it figured out now.

With the spare time I've had lately (6 days with no electricity), I've been re-reading some of the Atkins' books for motivation. Here's a quote from DANDR:

"If you're serious about following Atkins for life, I must reiterate that you have to invest some energy in exercise. Contrary to the messages our society generally sends us, your body was meant to move. Sitting around is unnatural. Working in an office is unnatural. A whole lot of modern life is unnatural. Parking in the far corner of the parking lot is not a mistake. It's where you should be, because exercise is not optional. It's an integral part of doing Atkins. It's often neglected and sometimes quietly scorned, but if you think you're doing the program and you're not exercising, you're not doing the program."

You just gave me more insentive to get with my program!

You are more than welcome, my friend!

There's strength in numbers... we CAN do this! And you've hit the nail on the head - you don't have to overdo it. Just do it. I fall into that trap often... I think that if I don't kill myself with exercise, it doesn't count... and then I burn out.

                    No more! Just gotta move.

Also struggling with the exercise. Needing to balance out some things in my life & get the focus back on myself. I'm letting myself be pulled in too many directions. I'm exhuasted & thus not taking care of me.

Just breezing through real quick to report on my exercise for the day. I've completed the "Fat to Firm Fitness Ball Workout for Dummies" DVD and the 20 minute Winsor Pilates DVD. I had a 10 mile bike ride yesterday, and ran in my neighborhood the day before that, so I'm on Day 3 of my exercise commitment. Woot!

Hi, Glenda I hope you find some balance soon!

When I was following Atkins, things worked. Now they're not. That quote is getting printed out, copied, and put all over the place!
