    Re: Emaciated?

Find another doctor and ask for his opinion also.

In my experience, some doctors are pro atkins and some are against it. My dr. thinks its fine if its done properly.

      Re: Emaciated?

I think you look great... you've got a kind of "Lance Armstrong" look going on, which is NEVER a bad thing. That man is amazing.

If you're concerned about how the latest 15 pounds have treated you because of what the doctor said, you could always post a newer pic for us--but I'm sure you still look great.

Keep on doing what you love. I'm sure you're fine. I think some people's perceptions of what "normal" weight has become hopelessly skewed in the "pudgy" direction. Of course, those in the fashion industry have the opposite problem, but we all have our quirks.

Bottom line: I think you look mahhhvelous!
No stats. Not weighing anymore ever. Will post "before and after" pictures when I want to. The end.

That fits perfectly with my experiences. A 3-400# coworker talkes her way out of doing any part of a shared assignment that requires movement away from her desk, much less standing up to do it, spends consideerable effort when she sees me to find anything at all to belittle me with.

My Mom knows about my losing on Atkins, and pipes out "you're getting skinny!" :lol at 199 lbs!!: I just let it go right out the other ear; a few years ago she told me I was too fat at 145!!

Congrats on your fat ratio mines a bit higher than that and I'm still getting my hump busted!

You look great, very fit and toned. Your doctor is obviously a DORK! The best solution would obviously be to get another one!

Usually fortunately, but sometimes unfortunately, doctors are also human. And they say really ignorant things. If you feel good, and I definitely think you look great, as do a bunch of other people, then that's the important thing.

                Doc: Have you lost weight?
                Me: Yup.
                Doc: On purpose?
Me: Yes, probably 40 pounds since I last saw you.

At this point I expected "How'd you do it?" or "You look very healthy" or "Keep up the good work". Instead I got.

"Don't lose anymore. You look emaciated."

I wasn't sure what it meant at the time, but I knew it wasn't complimentary.

Looked it up. Synonyms are: gaunt, haggard cadaverous, bony, and skeletal. Definitiion is extremely thin, especially from starvation, disease or cold.

Huh? He didn't even ask what I weighed. 175 for a 5'10" male is technically still overweight. I am at 15.4% body fat. My goal is around 160. Still have a roll around the belly to get rid of so I can actually see my abs some day.

Do I look gaunt? I've lost 15 pounds since the picture, but I don't see 15 pounds worth of change in the mirror.

Not being conceited here, but I think for the first time in my adult life, that I look pretty good.

Sometimes I think people are so used to seeing everyone overweight or obese that anyone at a "healthy" weight appears to be "too thin" or in some way sick.

Sorry for the rant. I have worked real hard to become healthy, a marathoner, and the only comment I get from my doctor is that I look sick.

                How deflating (no pun intended).

After reading through the thread, I re-read it.

Big-Runner's doctor didn't slam the diet. He told him not to lose anymore weight.

Also photos add weight, about 10-15 pounds and Big Runner has lost 15 pounds since the photo was taken. So to get a better mental image of Big Runner, you have to take those into consideration.

Some of you know I work at a medical clinic. So I asked my bosses what they mean by 'emaciated'. 3 out of 3 doctors said, to them, emaciated means a person has lost enough subcutaneous fat (the fat under the skin) that their bones are jutting out or are sharply defined without any sort of "padding" to soften the sharpness of the bones, like the breast bone or cheek bones. One of my bosses mentioned the wrist and the hands can look "thinned" and "sharp". Another said, take a look at the Olsen twins or any Hollywood starlet and you'll know what 'emaciated' is.

They also mentioned that emaciated is different from thin or slender in that emaciated implies illness.

So unless Big Runner posts a more current pic, I don't think it's fair of us to criticize what his doctor said or observed because Big Runner's pic is 15 pounds heavier than what he currently is.

                  Re: Emaciated?

I think you look great in the picture! Maybe it was the combination of the weight loss and the head shave? You look like a really different person all together from your before pic to your after! Besides, I wouldn't worry about his comment. Now if you went for physical and you didn't check out as healthy, that would be another whole story...but just a comment like that...personally I think the Dr was just jealous!

                            Re: Emaciated?

I would also say that I would need to see a current picture to determine if the doctor is correct or not. In your 193 lb picture you look great. Honestly, I can't see where that 15lbs would have come off! OK ... I see some small "love handles", but 15 lbs worth? I dunno.

I dated a guy who was tall and overweight when we were together. He got married (to someone else, LOL!) and started running. He lost a lot of weight fast and it made his face look gaunt. I actually thought he was more attractive overweight than as an ultra-skinny runner. He ended up having to stop running because of an injury and he put back on about 20 pounds which was perfect. He was still fit, but his face and body filled back out.

With your BMI and your % of body fat perhaps you are actually close to the ideal weight for your body than your goal of 160. You can get a number stuck in your head, but as a lot of people say ... the number on the scale doesn't always tell the whole truth.

Ok, here are some up to the minute pictures. As you can see from the side shot, I am definitely not fading away or "bony". I would like to lose enough to lose the belly and be able to see abs. I seem to have lost a disproportionate amount in the shoulders compared to the lower body.
Still have the "man boobs", but they're slowly going away.

I am working on toning as well as the running. Running or not, I've always had the "thick" legs. I think genetics will dictate that those aren't going anywhere.

So, do I look emaciated? A few more pounds to lose the belly overhang and I'm calling it goal.

                              That may be 170, 165, 160? I'll see.
