Re: Cayenne Pepper
My partner is indian and uses a lot of thermogenic spices in his cooking..cayenne,or red chilli powder (which is the hotter of the two) certainly fires my furnace up.
Ive experienced many a wooshie after his curries
I also found this for your info
Thermogenic Spices -- such as ginger, cayenne, mustard and cinnamon -- raise your body temperature and kick your metabolism into high gear. In fact, studies show that some of these seasonings triple the body's ability to burn calories for fuel rather than store them as fat.

Re: Cayenne Pepper
Capsicum its original name is a miracle herb. Do a Google search on it. You'd be surprised at all the uses. Thermogenic being one and a good anti-inflammatory.
As you venture through your Atkins journey, I highly encourage you to study the value of herbs and food as medicine. Everything at that point really falls into place.Make it a happy low carb life!

Re: Cayenne Pepper
just remember all spices have carbs soi when you use them you have to count them. if you have ever broken out in a sweat ating a hot pepper or food thenyou have experienced the thermogesic effect. but remember this is a small increase you you can't run out and eat more food thining you are burning more food.by the book atkinseer

Re: Cayenne Pepper
Sorry 2big I disagree about counting the spices
aside from thermogenics ...they give you endorphins that negate the carbs and they give so much pleasure ..put so much passion and variety to your food that you never have to eat the same meal twice!!! even on induction ...so ...
I vote ..enjoy your hot peppers, spices and herbs why limit your life any more than you have to ?????
and know that they improve the health bennies of your foods...because they have properties to them ..that can release nutrients in the food you eat..they in themselves have all kinds of things that help keep you healthy....(I have studied herbal medicine for years but do not have the ablility or space here to explain myself in any articulate manner so I encourage you to read yourself about herbs and spices synergy with food)...so NO do not count them unless you absolutely can not stand it ...just leave yourself this guiltless pleasure ...Last edited by Guest; June 20, 2006, 10:02 AM.

Re: Cayenne Pepper
I have to agree with Heidi. Too many people get hung up on induction and limit their diets to meat, cheese, eggs, mayo and butter. Veggies are limited and so are spices. Then we see stalls and boredom. The minute I started adding in extra veggies and fruit, herbs and spices my body completely changed. I had an apron for a stomach thought I would need a tummy tuck. When I faithfully started adding color to my life, my stomach left and never came back.
I've been doing this for 6 years and I can toll around the boards and see people I have seen for my 6 years who are depressed, still fat and still eating the same old foods with their constant cheats. They have not allowed themselves the freedom to experiment so they go off the deep end and gain.
Don't get me wrong I'm not trying to start anything I just hate seeing people afraid of fruit. Like Heidi stated...the more you know about what each food group actually provides and the antioxidant effect of color......it gives you the true pleasure of enjoying an apple a day. There's a lot of people out there even on maintenance not eating oranges, apples and bananas. Not good and not what Dr. A intended.
Inside out not outside in.Make it a happy low carb life!

Re: Cayenne Pepper
AT 5'9 and 120 lbs I've got it figured out and don't need people like fawn assuming I skip out on a variety of foods and am looking for shortcuts. I was simply asking if cayenne pepper is useful for the metabolism because I use it on a regular basis and it has made a difference.

Re: Cayenne Pepper
you know what ....sometimes we just get carried away and on a roll here and please understand it is nothing personal ..it is like being in a room full of extroverts with strong feelings about stuff....that said I am sorry if I came off as assuming anything about you in particular.it is just a subject not a personal issue..and of course I can only speak for myself but I would probably clump myself in being "people like Fawn"Originally posted by gazalehAT 5'9 and 120 lbs I've got it figured out and don't need people like fawn assuming I skip out on a variety of foods and am looking for shortcuts. yes you asked a simple question ..we were just going on about the idea of limiting spices and flavors in general and the fact that counting the carbs in spices was imo not worth the obesession ..it was just a rant in another direction and not intended to insult you ...I will certianly be more careful in the future
..but know this ..absolutely I believe in the thermogenic bennies of cayenne and other chiles...and I also I believe in the liberal use of spices for wellness of body, mind and spirit....and right now I am going to go eat really hot curry to prove it
...I will be hot and happy after that!
try not to make assumptions about people here either it is only fair there was NO attack intended from anyone in this thread ....

That's encouraging to me. I keep checking myself out in the mirror, wondering how long it will take me to save up for that tummy tuck. But amazingly to me, it seems to be shrinking nicely. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll be lucky enough to lose it all too!

Re: Cayenne Pepper
I didn't say DONT USE them I said COUNT THE CARBS IN THEM!!!! I love hot pepers and spices but I know I have a carb net total number so I can't use 3 tablespoons of BAM at 3 net carbs each per meal and stay in my limits eating the other healthy carb foods we are required to eat.
We have had folk posting rub mixes and bbq sauces saying O net carbs for the stuff cause they ignored allthe carbs in herbs and spices. count them and enjoy eating them as part of your Atkins.
all it takes is eating one carb over your individual CCLL and your losing will stop!
many folk don't count their carbs from foods other then veggies and then add frills to get to 20 net in induction and bemoan the fact they are only eating 20 net carbs and not losing.by the book atkinseer
