Re: Franken-Food & the Tight Spot...

first on a 10 hour flight you will be served meals in flight call the airline and order the meal you need

but if you are stowing away then
nuts if you are on extended induction or OWl rung3
some dried beef or turkey jerky
sealed in a pouch tuna, salmon, or chicken
    powdered cream

try a camping store as you can get whole foods freezedried sealed on pouches. I've used eggs, veggies, meats and even berries from that source and added water.

I haven't flown in almost 7 years, but when I used to fly regularly even 5 hour flights would have a meal served. And at least they would serve a beverage and nuts.....

Food served would not be atkins friendly, you could prob eat the cheese / salad if you took the vegie option, second meal would be breakfast, usually fruit.

nuts are a good idea - but not induction
beef jerky - not sure this would be allowed
        tuna/chicken/salmon - unlikey allowed
        powedered cream? - not sure

I would take atkins bars as a backup, they dont stall all.

This is just British Airways as an example; perhpas the diabetic menu would be a better choice?

          Note, no nuts are served.

The gluten free one is a good alternative too....at least with that meal you won't get bread, etc. Diabetic meals sometimes include bread, pasta, etc.

Remember; no liquids, no dairy, only dry sealed food.
was just following your restrictions and Atkins rules when i gave you suggestions. it you want no meat too you should have listed that too.

oh and nuts are only not allowed for the first 14 days iof induction, read your DANDR, all of it and you will see Dr Atkins is quoted as saying the first food he tell them to add back after the 14 days are up is nuts.

              about your plan meals

actually if you read down below the actual foods it says no peanuts not no nuts. it does say nuts are served. you can actually call ands ask them abiout the different foods on the meals and then make your choice.

I often make cookies or biscuits from flax which travel well in an airtight container. Some mini crustless quiches would work too I would imagine, and will keep for a day or so if sealed in an airtight bag.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

And what if someone has a 10hr flight during induction? I have read my dandr book thank you very much, however, you don't seem to be reading my posts or links.

British Airways don't serve nuts regardless of request; I eat meat but I was asking the question as to whether or not meat, dairy or vegetable could be carried internationally.

I have done some more research so Atkins travelers look like they can relax a little:

Can I take my own food and drink onboard?
Customers can take solid food items onboard for consumption in-flight such as sandwiches, crisps, fruit and vegetables.
Liquid-based food items such as pasta sauces, gravies, jams and syrups, yoghurts, soups, stews and curries are not permitted.

Customers are not permitted to take any drinks onboard. We are providing extra water in-flight.

At the end of the day, Atkins bars carry safe for induction, they don't stall everyone, and a lot of people have had huge success with them; so if its either starve or eat a bar - ill take the bar.

ROFL did I not just post about allowed meats? you were the one who said they were not. The pouches will not need any refrigeration during the 10 hr flight either since you can't take ice packs or freezer gel packs to keep fresh stuff chilled any more.

you know maybe you should read your own link http://www.britishairways.com/travel...s/public/en_us cause as I posted it definetly says nuts are served just not peanuts here is the quote from the page you linked us to

                    Peanut allergy policy
To help accommodate the needs of peanut allergy sufferers British Airways does not include peanut products within aircraft meals or snacks in any cabin, except on longhaul flights to/from the Far East where Peanut Satay may be included on the menu. However, other types of nut may be included on the longhaul aircraft menu, for example as snacks in Club World and FIRST.

and if they are out of the 14 day induction as I posted and doing extended induction nuts are allowed. check pages 62 and 83 of your DANDR and see.

Umm, you lost me a little on the whole meat issue to be honest; nevermind
You are correct about the peanuts though but moot if you're not on extended (or how many nuts you can eat if you are)

Back to the original topic; travel is one example of a very limited position for making you're own food... so bars are a backup.

travel isn't a limited option unless one does not plan ahead.

if you drive get a car cooler, if you fly get packages of meats like theses

or freeze dried stuff backpackers uses you can get in camping stores. they have veggies, fruits, berries too for OWL travelers.

I was curious why you said no dairy? cheese is very good for traveling and if you eat it in flight you don't have to worry about customs.

Not to prolong the discussion... But I want to point out how lucky you guys in the US are!

First, his flight was only 2 hours (Copenhagen - Stockholm). No food or only crap food... We do not have any of those nice little tuna packets - but MAN I wish we did.

As to getting your server to change your meal here (in most places in mainland Europe), I have to laugh. I've TRIED AND TRIED AND TRIED much to the dismay of my dinner companions (who were ABSOLUTELY mortified!). And out comes dinner (about an hour later because eating out takes a LONG time here), and nothing is changed!

Anyway - I'm going to try to SNEAK my food on the flight today (Copenhagen - Dublin) so I have stuff with me in Dublin (though I will probably have a little more flexible schedule thank goodness!). Let's see if customs stops me (they have BIG bins you are suppose to deposit all food in... so let's cross our fingers).

At the end of the day, I think we are all trying as hard as we can to stay on course - healthy - and in plan. Let's HOPE I can do that without starving this week!

Kacey - my hubby was in a similar situation just this past week. With all the security, he wasn't even allowed to bring anything with him on the plane, and by the time they got to him (one leg of the journey) with the cart of "for sale" items, it had only things he couldn't eat (he's pre-diabetic, not necessarily LC, but is lactose intolerant, so cheese is out, as well).

So, he's stuck with either pringles or other "snack" items on most flights, or nothing at all. I'm not even sure if he was permitted to pack the bars in his carry-on bag, and he certainly couldn't grab something in the terminal and bring it onboard.

So, I applaud him for his endurance, but it is so much harder when travelling, now. The last time I travelled the restrictions were not quite so intense, and I packed a bunch of stuff. I also packed cans of tuna (small, 85g ones I found at Walmart) and a few other things to have in the hotel room in the event there was nothing else to have (and they were not providing lunch at the meetings where I was attending, so we were on our own for that). Of course, I have the advantage of cheese and other items such as that as a main-stay, and I got the key to the hotel fridge, so I just packed it full of what I wanted, and saved a pile on room service, etc.

Re: 10 hour flight and remaining within the "go no more than 6 hours without eating rule"....

Eat before you leave your house. In the US I beleive the wait time to board is about 2 hours. If it takes an hour to get to the airport. Then the travel time (from home to landing) is 13 hours.

                                Home: Eat
                                Hour 1: travel to airport.
Hour 2-3: Check into airport, wait.
                                Hour 4: board
Hour 5-10: eat another carry-on snack or whatever you can eat from the meal provided.
                                Hour 11-13: digest food.
                                Hour 14 leave airport.

I noticed sandwiches are allowed on the British Airways list posted. Atkins Revolution Rolls (http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...ead.php?t=6807) are 100% Induction friendly bread substitute. So sandwiches made from the Rolls, filled with roast beef, roast chicken, grilled veggies, etc. would be allowed aboard per the regulations.
