I was gonna post this under my original thread, but it was hijacked and I don't want to interrupt the lovefest going on over there! Anyway, I went to the doctor for my hair loss yesterday and I brought all of my vitamins. I was taking one Carb Smart multivitamin, 600 mg of calcium, 125 mg of magnesium and 1 special vitamin I picked up for healthy hair. She looked at them and told me that I was WAY over on my vitamin A and to stop it immediately (the one for hair). We all think of vitamins as being a good thing, but as the saying goes - there is such a thing as too much of a good thing! Oh yeah, and as a side note, she looked at my diet for the last 5 days (I printed out my Fitday menus for her) and she said that I was eating a very healthy diet and really could not improve upon it, soooo don't let anyone tell you this WOE is bad for you! She said that most doctors only have a problem with Induction, as there are a lot of nutrients that are lost with that restrictive phase (hence my hair loss a few months later), but they think OWL is pretty healthy. FYI.

It better!! Haha! Actually, when she looked at it she commented that it was thick. I laughed and said, well, I've lost half of it, so you can imagine how much hair I had to begin with! She said she saw new growth, so that's promising. I was supposed to get my roots touched up yesterday, but she advised against it, saying to wait 4 weeks.

Hi Heidi! I totally agree with you! It is NOT okay to lose your hair! But, we've all done Induction and according to the doctor, losing your hair is a side effect of that phase of Atkins for some people. It takes about 6-8 weeks after Induction for the side effect to make an appearance. I moved to OWL after the initial 2 weeks and I am now on the berry rung.

I have got something to add about Vitamin A. It's never a good idea to take straight Vitamin A, HOWEVER, what people should take is a good Beta Carotene capsule (or two). Beta carotene won't hurt you if you get too much (your body makes Vitamin A out of it), but you can still feel good about getting enough Vitamin A without being poisoned.

                  Re: Word of caution

I would have freaked completely out if I had lost hair on induction ..I still say if you eat all kinds of veggies and not just one or two and you eat the amt you are supposed...mix all those foods on the list ..you do not have to loose hair ...period...

I really believe eating the same thing day after day and not spreading the wealth in your diet is the cause ....but then that is just me thinking ..this whole hairloss thing makes me just a little mental sorry....

I hear ya completely, Heidi. It sure is tough to show naysayers that Atkins is the best when your hair is falling out in clumps! Totally preventable.

Nope, no hijack! Yet. But, I must put my 2 cents in here. I don't believe that you have control over how your body will handle Induction. My veggies have always consisted of lettuce, zucchini, spinach, spaghetti squash, tomatoes, cucumber, mushrooms, onions, peppers, romaine, broccoli, cauliflower and pumpkin to name a few and I was obsessed with my Fitday numbers being right on. I personally think some people can handle the lack of nutrients lost and some people can't - just like some get Induction flu and some don't and some lose 30 pounds on Induction and some lose 5. Everyone is different.

You said hair loss was preventable. How is it preventable. I am doing induction (again) and I did not have any problems the first time but I sure do not want to lose my hair in like 6 weeks!

Yay Jenny! I'm so glad that the effects aren't permanent! As much of a bummer as it is, I'm glad your doc advised against the touch up for now. Maybe by the time you go to have it done your hair will be thick and luxurious again and this will have all been a bump in the road of the past.

I've had a bit of hair loss since starting this WoE, but nothing dramatic. Like you, I've eaten a wide variety of veggies and as I came out of induction I had even more variety. You're so right when you say that it's different for everyone. I hope that your experiences with it will give some much needed information to newbies when they find your posts!

For prevention (see I have no resolve at shutting up) I say eat a WIDE variety of veggies as well as the rest of your foods...if you choose the three cups of salad ones then mix it up ...the cooked ones same thing ...spread the nutritional wealth ..and by all means take a multi vit..also spread your meats, to all the groups ...fish, poultry, red meats what ever ..but do not get in a rut and eat the same food over and over and think a vitamin will help ...and no it is not good to loose hair!!! ...if you do then go to the first rung and eat more veggies...no one gets fat eating a wide varliety of fresh vegetables!!!
